use curbs and other obstacles....ollies come quicker when there is an obstacle that makes you have to ollie or run into it.....it forces the skater in you to make that ollie less you get slammed.

I used to skate back in the 90's. I was great. Stopped when I broke my board and moved to a town where they played football and had a wrestling program. Now I have kids old enough to start skating, started it back up with them to show them how it's done. I suck now. I can still ride but I don't move like I used to. If you don't use it, you lose it man!

I was 11, and I'm 52 now.. My first real board was an 'Alva' with multicolour wheels, which was a bit futuristic for the UK at the time, friends called it my 'ironing board'. I don't really do tricks, never have, other than (mostly !)staying on, and jumps for kerbs and other general obstacles. For about 30 years I've had a a '91 Zorlac 'Deeter', with suitably vintage red 70mm Kryptonics and 'X-Caliber' trucks. Fun facts- I took it out and about around some of the streets and parks in London last summer teaching my girlfriend how to roller skate; this included a shifty glide around an almost empty Serpentine art gallery, which was admittedly a bit irresponsible of me but it was also deliciously naughty, what can you do .. but it has had other uses- my son learned to walk using it(with a rucksack strapped to the deck), and it's moved washing machines etc. in its' life, if you haven't already you'll find your own alternative uses. If you do your own thing, that'l be the most fun.

Started skating when I was 15 when skateboarding was blowing up again due to the Tony Hawk factor, but mainly it was my friend who bought a board and I just decided to buy a cheap complete to hang out. Skated for about two years, learned a few tricks but my progress was hindered by me being a complete coward on the board. Regardless I had a bit of fun and just drifted away from it as life got more adult. Despite that, the feeling on absolute freedom that you get from just simply cruising never left. Last year aged 34 I had one of my biannual urges to get back into skating, which always fizzled out. One day I was walking past my local skatepark ( Kelvingrove, Glasgow) with a German friend and as we walked past the skaters I said "I should do that again, I miss it" " well why don't you?" . The simplicity of her response caught me of and I realised I had no reason not to. Bought a board a 7,75 ha! Was fine back then but seems skinny as now. Went to Kelvingrove that day with my heart absolutely hammering, almost feeling sick with nerves but it's fine as I set the bar low, just turn up and cruise a bit, even ten mins. It's still a Victory. So I get cruising about, trying a few manuals, kickturning getting the feeling back and even doing a tiny bit transition. I started feeling good. I see a local older skater called shug, watched a documentary about him called 'Shug life' and I'd recommend it to any skater as it's a touching look how much value skateboarding can hold. Back to the point I get chatting to him saying I saw the docu and I enjoyed it and how I was getting back in to skating. " Well you're a skater alright" despite my limited display that comment was like one great big hug and damn did I feel stupid for not doing it earlier. I've got to say with no job, no contact with friends or family and an increasingly uncertain future I got to say I'm as free as ever standing on that deck. Now that for me at least is the power of skateboarding!

You should do it, same thing for me. Used to skate a bit when I was younger, picked it up again a year ago at around 31. It's definitely more challenging than I remembered, and it's good to start slow and ease yourself into it because you're not as young as you used to be. But it's rewarding and fun, something to challenge yourself with when you have free time

Can't say for sure when I started... it was the 60's and steel and clay wheels were the norm, I'm 58 now. I never did much ramp/vert/park... street cruising/bombing, downhill and slalom were more my style. At 58 years old... you lay on the ground for a while longer when you crash - no I'm NOT taking a nap, thanks :)

Nice video, it is very true how people become very set on living the "core" skater life style, where they live, eat, sleep, skateboarding 24/7, but it doesn't have to be that way like you mentioned, skateboarding for me, and for alot of other beginners, is just a hobby, a pass time to have fun, so don't take it too seriously, think about it, the reason you started skating is to have fun right? at least thats why I started, so don't get to caught up with all the "serious" aspects just have fun and skate on.

I started skating age 10 and stopped age 19 after breaking a little bone in my hand which stopped me from playing the guitar, I preferred the guitar. Now at 54 I just bought a skateboard and I’ve been out 8 times since I got it, fallen off 3 times, having a great time just doing a bit of exercise that’s not boring like running or cycling. On the subject of falling. I'm 31 and just picked skateboarding up 3 months ago. 6 weeks in, I split my chin open trying to revert on a bank. I was wearing a helmet, but didn't tuck my chin in (like every video on safe falling tells you to). Falling is inevitable. But the more it happens, the better you get at bending your limbs and rolling out of the impact. It shook my confidence for a few days, but I patched my face up and took it as a learning experience.

i started skating at 8. I'm 15 now and I've learned a few tricks but I usually just cruise around now.

I started skating when I turned 9 with my friends board but I got my own board when I was 11 and I stopped skateboarding when my neighbor left his stuff in the road and I scraped my knees and my board went weird and yea, I’m thinking about getting back into it

I'm 15 and haven't started skating yet but I'm getting there, almost got enough to get me a board

I was 8 when I started and I'm nearly 25 now. I skate street but apart from cruising and bombing hills, I can't do any tricks with the exception of ollies and slappies lol

started when I was 15, stopped when I was 19, now 49...and still think about it!!
