Ski Snowboard with an Airstream caravan in the French Alps [CC]

Fluffed delivery! Wobbly cameras! Shaky footage! The inability to vlog and snowboard at the same time! Another - er - profeshnul production, innit?
Have you ever considered taking your caravan or motorhome on a skiing or snowboarding winter holiday? In this video, Dougal and I take the Airstream to the French Alps, where I enjoy a spot of snowboarding up the mountain. We stay at the Huttopia Campsite in Bourg St Maurice, and from nearby the site is a funicular that takes you up the mountain to Arc 1600, from where you can access the Paradiski ski area including all the Les Arcs stations, and much more.

We went during the first week of opening, from 15th December 2018, which meant I could benefit from cheaper lift passes and quieter slopes.
The four hour lift pass worked well, as it was long enough for my ageing bones, and of course I wouldn't leave Dougal too long.

Hi Andrew great video; nice to see I'm not the only one who will brave the alps in the winter with the caravan. Done it many times in France and Switzerland as a very keen skier it has enabled me to have many more ski days than otherwise would have been able to do in hotels. Even done a winter season pitch a couple of times so could fly out for weekends in between main holidays. Thoroughly recommended! I agree entirely with your comments about the mountains and the enjoyment you can get from just simply being there!!

I might sound like a broken record, but with constantly producing great videos by you, Andrew, I can’t stop thanking you for them. I was surprised to see Dougal loving the snow, as I think he doesn’t like water?! I bet he liked the heated Airstream as much as that. Lovely shots of the snowy mountains and I especially loved the camera perspective right from the snowboard. Wish you both all the best for 2019.

It is indeed surprising that Dougal likes the snow, but I think he was more excited just to be away from Spain where there weren't many places for him to run, other than sand and gravel. What an excellent video. I just had to laugh at Dougal at the beginning, enjoying the virgin snow in his warm coat and I'm sure he was laughing while retrieving his ball. What scenery, you are so lucky to have been there and done that! Just perfect, I can't put it any other way!

Growing up in Ohio where we had unending snow, I just will never "get" PAYING to go some place where it is. Granted, we didn't have the lovely mountains in the background, but still snow will NEVER be my idea of a good time. Really enjoyed the video andrew. Anything is possible. Very inspiring to see caravans and mohtorhomes in a caravan park in the mountains. I took my grandson to norway last feb for skiing. He is really good i cant ski to save my life It would be good to go in the van. Cheaper as well.

Great video, as ever, Andrew. Beautiful scenery! Have to confess that I am a skier not a snowboarder, but like you, I liked to ski a bit then look at the view, do another bit then stop again to admire the scenery. My wife on the other hand was a 'bomber' - as many runs as she could each day. Brilliant vlog once again Andrew! I've always wondered how possible practical it would be to take the caravan for a ski holiday. Would be interest to know how you deal with the cold, frozen water systems, towing in snow etc? Hi Jon, it's simple: Travel with empty water tanks and fill up on site. Onboard fresh water tanks work best, otherwise you may have to bring in your Aquaroll at night if the temperature is going to drop to below, say, -3. Towing in snow is best done with winter tyres on a 4x4, but to access this site in Bourg (800m altitude), the roads were perfectly clear both ways.

Gawd Andrew , what a life you lead , I can't keep up , I would need four sticks to help me with that snowboard. Lol. Luv that handsome Dougal 's new coat , was that a slight limp I noticed on the way home 1st day up the mountains , thought you had creaked the knee again !! No doubt its The Outer Hebrides next on the list , not going to N E Bay next year , heading to Ryan Bay instead as N E Bay has gone up by £91 , and I'm only 5 miles to the ferry instead of 20 , much cheaper and no 21day rule , south facing , gr8t views of the Loch , less windy and lots of birdies to watch for Lilybitesthecat and a real treat at the end of a drive to the Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel for Afternoon Tea and Cakes , yum can't wait. !! Did you use motorcycle riding gear at all on the slopes? I know there are some riding pants, gloves, balaclavas, jackets, etc., that can double as: snowmobile, skiing, snowboarding and, funny enough, winter motorcycle riding gear. So any crossover in your regular gear? Dougal sure lived the snow! Woooohooo!

YES! Many of the lifts are pedestrian friendly and there is a viewing platform at the top which is what I wanted to show... but no lift :(

Hi G&S, Bourg St Maurice is at about 800m so if you are lucky (like me) you won't need to use snow chains. When I was there, chains or winter tyres were compulsory to drive up to resorts such as Les Arcs, Val d'Isere, and Tignes (1600m plus). Winter tyres are far more preferable to chains, and there is talk that winter tyres might soon be compulsory in Alpine regions of France mid-December to Mid-April, as they are in many other countries.

Amazing video, the mountains in the snow are the best. We’re away end of February, not in the caravan though, but a week snowboarding and skiing in Germany 🇩🇪 how do you find towing in the snow? I’m nervous enough just driving in snow

I've towed a caravan lots in snow... this is why I drive a 4x4! Put it into 4WD high ratio and it's no different traction-wise to driving solo. Enjoy your holiday!

I think a 4x4 is going to be on my Christmas list, I had to be pulled out of our pitch earlier by one, as our car was skidding 😏 I’ll wait for your review with anticipation

Another great vlog. Thank you. How do you find the caravan handles the cold compared to, say, the campervan you tested in Scotland? It seems warmer. Maybe because it's a premium Airstream and well insulated. Also, how do you find towing a caravan on snow vs driving a campervan on snow?

The Airstream is better than a camper van for insulation, but a coachbuilt motorhome or new build caravan (Bailey, Swift etc) would be even better. Airstream is Grade 2, modern coachbuilts are Grade 3. I prefer towing a caravan with a 4x4 to driving a 2WD camper van in the snow. Would be the other way round if the car was 2WD.
