Never thought butterfly was difficult until I was getting lessons to improve my freestyle and asked them to show me the proper way to do butterfly. It’s painful and exhausting as hell! How anyone can do this for years on end without severe shoulder pain is beyond me.
@swimbearuk2 жыл бұрын
I think people are more likely to get pain in their shoulders or injuries from doing a bad freestyle recovery than doing butterfly. Butterfly is more tiring than freestyle but as long as the arms are recovered correctly to either side of the body, rather than thrown over too far behind the back or with bent elbows, it's unlikely to cause injuries.
@conquerorlittle442 жыл бұрын
you dont have to use too much shoulder strength in butterfly…no more than free and breaststroke actually. the force mainly comes from your hip. gotta leverage that correctly and you wont have to rely on shoulder to move in butterfly
@rosalbaprietorubio35192 жыл бұрын

Thanks, a life long breaststroke swimmer, I have just got the hang of front crawl from using the videos, , I love the feeling of the underwater part of dolphin, ,it is amazing to suddenly realise that I can move that way... I shall try the idea of not worrying about getting the arms much overhead in recovery ,, I'm practicing in the shallow end a few metres at a time ➡️but I'm determined to progress😊 (spacing it out between handstands, underwater breaststroke, aquaerobic moves etc to keep the frustration level in check, , I try to make learning fun, esp with my short attention span)

I am a novice, wouldn’t even dream of butterfly. However, after practicing dolphin for 2 weeks, butterfly might be possible in distant future. I like the blade and shoulder flexibility and strength buildup in your butterfly exercise. In Iyengar yoga, armpit flexibility is one I practice, too.

After a 50 year lay off from the fly, I am starting to pick it up again..... Not as strong as I used to be. I have seen several who teach to get some glide in it before you start your arm pull. I think it is some times referred to as the Shaw method of fly. If I didn't have such a whimpy kick, it would be easier.... Fins and a snorkel really help me at this point.

Hey, thanks for this great video! I'm going to try out these exercises at the pool tomorrow. I started learning the butterfly stroke around two months ago and I've been working on achieving the proper technique since. I did not need this much time to perfect the techniques for the other three strokes. My instructor tells me that my feet don't lift up while kicking as much as they ideally should, when swimming butterfly (or even just doing the dolphin kick). Unlike the other strokes, I am simply unable to understand why that's happening and how to rectify it (or which body part to focus on, exactly) which is why I have no idea how to refine my technique and haven't really been improving for the last few weeks. And I swim daily. My instructor has suggested that I only work on the dolphin kick (while sculling) for the time being, because when I do the butterfly, I seem to use mostly my arm strength to move forward instead of the energy from my dolphin kick. I also get very tired very soon (can hardly do 25 mtrs without panting like I've just run a marathon). Do I need to control how far my legs drop down so that they can lift up properly? If not, what exactly might be the problem here? I would really appreciate you advice. I follow your channel regularly and it has helped me swim better than any actual human instructor has. Lots of love.
@cotefacekillah2 жыл бұрын
I recently started being able to do the butterfly. The few things that helped it click for me were the following. The arm pull is just two freestyle pulls at the same time. Best way for me to get my body to understand this was simply doing one arm butterfly. Keep 1 arm extended and use the other to pull while keeping the two beat dolphin kick per stroke then switch arms. This felt awkward at first but really helped with understanding the pull since I only needed to focus on one arm. It also helped with learning the undulating movement described in this video because it is significantly less tiring than normal butterfly and its slower so I could focus more on the other parts of the stroke. Lastly is just butterfly kicking on your back in streamline position. This just reinforces the butterfly kick with extra practice and helps build all the muscles related to it.

I'm discouraged by the fitness center I go to for my swim lessons. I'm learning from such videos but still need correction and coaching when actually in water. Almost drowned when my floater 'floated' away from me and I found myself gasping for air but swallowed water instead. Managed to bring my knees up to my chest and came back up to hold on to a side rail.

I'm 75 and started to learn butterfly three years ago by using KZbin. I use my back flexibility to slide and move forward. My daughter told me my butterfly looks lousy. I guess she thinks I should swim like a Godzilla instead of a soft despacito butterfly. I don't get tired with the butterfly while I can see the Godzillas giving up after one lap. In spite of my daughter's criticisms, people in the pool think my butterfly looks good and wonder how I can do it without getting tired.

could you elaborate the 5th exercise? thank you!
@SkillsNT2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The most important part is to do two kicks correctly. One two push the chest down and the other to push the chest up. The arms can com back to the front slowly and through the water instead of above. The legs stay still during this. You will completely stop moving forward during this recovery part. This will make sure you are only focused on the correct timing and movements of the torso and kick. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

1. Stretching almost never results in permanent increases in ROM 2. Getting blood in the muscles is completely false. Blood doesn’t go in muscles. The reason we do warm ups is because our muscles are viscoelastic. They work optimally at higher than baseline temperatures. Warming up causes muscles to be more elastic, perform better and incur less damage from stress. 3. If it doesn’t take a lot of strength to do butterfly if technique is good why are we doing strength training? Wouldn’t our time be better spent in the water practicing technique
@SkillsNT2 жыл бұрын
That's what the old school believed. But the studies never followed the subjects doing the stretches with increasingly more pressure and over a longer period of time. What you gain in one day it will almost all be lost the next day. But doing it consistently with increasingly more load gets great results. 2 - The increase in temperature is because the blood vessels dilate. So there is more blood. 3- Higher temperature and temporary gains in ROM are a great way of getting ready for a butterfly practice in the water 😉
@hqs95852 жыл бұрын
As you propel forwards with your arms going backwards, you generate momentum which is dependent on velocity, this velocity which is changing to do the acceleration of the arms REQUIRES FORCE. Acceleration is proportional to FORCE which of course depends on the strength since there is a viscous medium (water) that cause opposite forces. "Warming muscles become more elastic.." NONSENSE. Elasticity is not dependent on temperature. The modulus (strain/stress) and/or viscosity do depend on heat. Actually as you get colder the muscles instinctively start vibrating, sign of more mobility (shivering effect).Stress does not cause damage, it is the strain or change in dimension that actually causes the damage! Blood does run in the capillaries that are in intimate contact with the muscles. As blood circulates the oxygen does get spread from the hemoglobin to the muscle! The increase in ROM from stretching DOES occur as we do the stretching repeatedly and dynamically. This is science not jut bluff.
@tann_man2 жыл бұрын
@@hqs9585 I never claimed force isn't required you're 'debunking' something I never said. I also never said elasticity is dependent on temperature. Viscosity is. Muscles are VISCOelastic. When you're cold muscles vibrate in order to warm up not bc they are are more mobile. I was using Stress in the colloquial sense of the word - as in exertion. You agree with me about blood. It "runs in the capillaries that are in intimate contact with the muscles." NOT inside our muscles. Stretching does almost nothing at a mechanical level for muscle length and it cannot permanently increase ROM (ROM in several studies has been shown to be exclusive to adaption of pain thresholds in lengthened positions). Sports specific movement has been proven to be more effective at increasing ROM and static stretching has proven to be rather ineffective.
@tann_man2 жыл бұрын
@@SkillsNT No static stretching is old school mindset. It's not effective for increasing sports specific ROM especially compared to alternatives. Actually no temporary ROM can be dangerous and detrimental to performance (only in extreme cases). You're better off warming up in the water, doing movement prep in the water and moving you muscles through long, tolerable, and natural ranges in the water
@SkillsNT2 жыл бұрын
@@tann_man Static Stretching is not dangerous, it is just a very light tension that could get the muscle and connective tissue fatigued if that range is never trained. But I agree that moving into that stretch position will get better results. That's why I said it in the video. Static stretching studies are very old school but new research is coming. Results are already here though and we have tested them. However, I appreciate the comments and the effort to improve our way of thinking. I don't claim to have all the answers, I just study from people that know more than me and I put their ideas to the test before making videos about them.
