You know, about tanning oils, I remember my grandma comparing it to frying with oil. Oil gets hot because it absorbs temperature and sun rays and your skin is basically frying. So true! Doctors are often so pressed for time that they only know what the pharmaceutical rep has told them about the drugs’ side effects. Several years ago, I developed a rare neurological disease that nearly killed me! The neurologist who treated me figured out, from studying all the possible side effects of all the medications and supplements I was taking, that this disease had been caused by a rare side effect of the medication my rheumatologist had prescribed! Once I was out of the hospital, I told my rheumatologist what my neurologist had found, and she was totally dumbfounded-and not a little angry. She thought my neurologist was waaaaaay out of line to take me off that medication. However, she apparently set herself to study more about that drug, and later apologized and said that the neurologist was right!

I remember "laying out" covered in baby oil. My fair skin has had some deep terrible burns which was a good motivator to stop. My grown kids would get sunscreen when we would be out for activities in the sun but now I bug them to use it every single day as I do now. The shift in the social culture is so good for the younger generation - they know a lot more about how damaging the sun is than I did at their age. My kids are part Filipino so they don't burn but they wear SPF to avoid premature aging!

Same! I actually developed photosensitivity and cannot go out in the sun. I get hives all over my body, especially if I am taking vitamin D. It's not really that I developed it. Oh yes I was really cute then, but not so much now. I have scars from cancer on my face, legs, and arms. Can you please explain how tanning is considered a "skin injury"? I want to tell a friend who lives for sunbathing, and there's nothing that can convince her that sun is bad. Granted that she has dark olive skin naturally, and doesn't wrinkle despite her age and despite the years that she's been sunbathing, but in South America, people love to tan, so I want to be very specific when I tell her (and others there) why it's so bad for you. People in Argentina are pretty progressive thinkers, but I think they still have the Victorian Era idea that the sun can cure anything for some reason. I sunbathed a lot as a kid well into my 30s if not longer. I'm a type 3 on the scale (but blonde and blue-eyed) though tan easily. I still have sun spots but they're fading apparently. I heard that they're deep in the skin so any whitening done chemically is just superficial. My friend obviously has been blessed with great genes (at least on mother's side) especially as far as skin is concerned. They live long lives, go out in the sun for HOURS every day, and DO NOT wrinkle, even when they're older (mom, grandmother, great grandmother, herself and her daughter) so she's quite *likely* not going to get skin cancer, just because the family (at least five gens of it) doesn't have a history of it, however I would still like to inform this and be very specific to my friends and family over there. Thanks!

When you’re a red head with very fair skin and thought you’d be able to tan at the beach in your teens back in the 90’s. Fast forward a couple of decades, 4 skin cancers removed, 3 of these off my face 😩 I make my kids wear sun cream and hats every day year round as we live in the subtopics. I have all of the windows in our house and cars tinted. We also have an extra shade screen over the window next to my babies car seat in the car.

@dr.dray , can you do a post about NANO-particles in MINERAL SUNSCREEN, and if this is something we should be concerned about?? There seems to be a lot of controversy about this topic. Also, a post on MINERAL SUNSCREENS for ACNE-PRONE skin would also be super helpful!

I was one of those people who used oil and laid in the sun in the 80s and 90s. Beach every weekend. Tanning beds in spring to get a base tan. I am going to be having blue light therapy teatment 6/22 for the 20+ spots of actinic keretoses on my face. I had about 25 spots on my arms chest and back cryoed 2 weeks ago and have 6 spots requiring biopsies. I do wear 50 spf now and the biggest floppy hat when I am outside. I only wish I could go back in time 30 years and tell my younger stupider self to stay out of the sun! The blue light therapy has me terrified. The 2 videos I found on KZbin that did it for pre cancers are horrifying!

You couldn’t have known 30 years ago! Honestly, I’ve always been into skincare, but no one was telling us about sunscreen 30 years ago. Remember the copper tone girl with the tan lines? We did our best with the information available at the time. I wish you well with your treatments. Remember, your mental state is your biggest friend or enemy when getting anything done. Think positive!💝

I've been using the ordinary retinol 1% to treat my deep hyperpigmentation for 1 month now. Still need to wait a few months to see visible results. In conjunction with facial sunscreen with spf 50. Dr Dray really pursued me to invest to sunscreens. Unfortunately it stains my clothes especially the whites. I've learned the hard way that don't apply sunscreen on skin that contacts with the shirts fabric. Just don't let your arms contact with your clothes.

Have you tried chemical sunscreens that are often clear/colorless? I haven't experienced my clothes staining as a result.

I've been using The Ordinary AHA BHA once a week like the bottle states on my neck and face as I think I have KP or closed commodones there. I've used half the bottle by now and it hasn't seem to make a dent in my rough bumpy skin. But my skin is feeling irritated but no redness. I put on sunscreen as soon as I wake up thanks to Dr. Dray's advice. Perhaps even wearing sunscreen isn't enough when using these types of products during the summer sun?
@JulienArbor3 жыл бұрын
I get little bumps on my cheeks every now and then and no exfoliant (incl TO AHA/BHA) has ever gotten rid of them. The one thing that DOES work is oil cleansing with Shu Uemura POREfinist2 for several minutes and focusing on those rough areas. I don’t know if any other oil cleanser would work because that’s the only one I’ve ever used, but it definitely doesn’t work with a face wash. Exfoliants do a great job on my skin except for those tiny cheek bumps, but oil cleansing works every time!

@@JulienArbor Thank you for recommending it. I'm glad you found something that works. Unfortunately, I'm sensitive to fragrance. It seems it has fragrance and a number of irritating things like citronellol, linalool. Do you apply it around your eyes too?

When I was young and dumb, I put on baby oil and laid out even though I know burn like a mofo. I fell asleep in the sun. Next, I woke up and was so, so red. I tried everything to cure it but it hurt to put on pants or a tshirt. I had to take a final in high school while my clothes stuck to me (super burn + aloe = aloe sandwich). I had to get a tub of silver sulfasalazine cream and not shower for a week. Slept on towels on my bed. Peeling was so painful. NOT WORTH IT- I now wear sunscreen as much as I can- the pain and the risk isn’t worth it!!

Dear Dr. Dray and dear subscribers. Can you please confirm that having sunscreen on does NOT influenc the tanning of your skin? My friends always want to have a tan in the summer and tell me they don't wear a high spf or don't aply too much because the skin wouldn't turn darker. What is up with that? I rather be white as hell then damagin my skin. 2. Question: what do you think about going to the tanning booth ( of course with sunscreen on) befor holidays somewhere hot and sunny to prevent getting sunburnd because the skin would be more prepared?
