From what I experienced it preys on two fears: the fear your felt as a little kid wandering around your house at night while everyone else is asleep. The other fear is when you're a parent and you're jolted awake by the scream of your child and you fear the worst.

I think Tom Servo said it best: "It's like they have two servings of tension that they're trying to stretch out for seven people." That's the impression I get from this film. It's got some good ideas and creepy stuff *does* happen occasionally, but the glacial pacing does the film a huge disservice. You can only stretch out the tension so far before the audience starts to check out, thinking, "Oh... So this is just the *whole* movie then, huh?" I hear the director does have a much shorter film that was basically the prototype for this movie on his KZbin page, so I'll have to check that one out and see if that film works any better.

I watched it the other night. I did what I thought was best. Turned out all the lights, cranked the home theater, and gave it my time and attention. I respect what the film was able to do for only a 15k budget, and there were some genuinely unsettling moments. I think the idea that this is what the kid is experiencing in a coma is a really interesting theory, but overall they could have trimmed about 20-30 mins from it at least. It's just too long. I'm all for long movies, but the vibe of this one would still work in a shorter film. Watch the youtube film by the same director called "Heck", it's 30 mins and inspired Skinamarink. If you don't vibe with that, skip this one.

I agree. I think it strains the attention span a little too much. It goes from building anticipation and atmosphere to begging the viewer's thoughts to wander, breaking immersion and interest in the film. It was close to getting the balance right but yeah, 20 minutes trimmed off would've done a lot

I agree, would have been much better as a short film. The graininess & lighting became too much after the first 30mins and started giving me a migraine so I had to watch it in two parts. Creepy and uneasy at times at best. I was more amazed that I instantly realized they were watching the same exact Fleischer Cartoon tape that Anthony was watching in Twilight Zone: The Movie.

Yeah you can easily see this working better as a short film, although I admire the graininess and trailer as it does make you feel like you're watching a film from the 90s, 80s, or 70s.

this movie very accurately reflects that kind of nightmare we had as a kid where you’re in an environment that resembles your home, but you know its not your home. I also love how it conveys how your home can take a sinister tone when bathed in darkness. Its also SUPER sad when you realize the reason this movie is entirely in the dark is because the kids are too small and short to reach the light switches.

Felt the same way, man. Watched it two nights ago and fell asleep around the 60% mark before waking up and rewinding it and dozing off again throughout the last quarter of the movie. I've only fallen asleep to 3 other movies in my life lol. If Skinamarink were a short film, it would be so much more palatable. It was just far too long for what it offered and I definitely considered skipping through it. Couple creepy moments but a lot of incoherence and eye strain when you're trying to parse through the darkness and shadows. The toilet/buckets bit made me laugh a bit. I'd probably watch this one more time just to make it through without falling asleep. It wasn't bad, per se, I suppose I just expected more to happen. And I wouldn't compare this to House of Leaves. There were honestly only a couple scenes where you even witness parts of the house appearing/vanishing/changing.
@nl3064
@nl3064 Жыл бұрын
It actually is based on a short film (the director made a half-hour short, 'Heck' in 2020). And I also literally thought of House of Leaves while watching Skinnamarink, not only because of the shifting/dissapearing doors, but the house does seem to expand towards the end (impossibly tall hallways) and darkness where you can hear something thumping around.

I feel like this movie was 100% made for me. I completely get why others might find it boring or even just a little too long, but it just worked for me exactly how I think the director intended it to work and I personally was just too engrossed to feel like it was going on for two long. I might be the outside opinion on this but personally I could have watched 3 hours of this and be satisfied. Assuming there were more scares to balance out the longer run time.

The creator of this film began as a KZbin channel called Bite-Sized Nightmares, where people would write their childhood nightmares into the comments and then he would create them as short films. This feels like one of those Analog horror shorts you can find on KZbin. Only difference is that there's a payoff with those and despite how weird their stories get you can always count on having clues to an explanation. And they are way shorter which work better than a full length movie. With Skinamarink you get Nothing. It is exactly what you imagined a " Arthouse "🎭 horror movie to be like, and that's both as a positive and a negative insult.

It reminded me of this time back in the 90's (1997 -98) in 4th grade science class, we were being taught about, "Fear', the video demonstration was from this Laser Disc education collection, before playing the video the teacher requested those who get scared easily to leave the room, I wasn't among those who left I was thinking, "This is gonna be great!" So the video plays, in it... It fades in on a pixelated mosaic vision of something watching a guy carefully wander the factory of where the laser discs were produced,(along with eerie distorted sfx and a build up tension music bed) then it cuts to the guy over shoulder, he's cautious like somethings following him, then a POV left and right pan through alleys of tall shelves, it would cut back to the pixelated vision still observing the man from a distance, the man continues onward still cautiously, more over the shoulder and POV shots, showing him hesitating of opening a door, then the pixelated vison starts to get closer and closer with rotations of cutting back to the guy, then *SLAM* from the POV of the guy there's a post edit swoosh to the right with sfx to look behind him and you see this large "Meh" :| face looking at you followed by a low bass cello slide. We all screamed and ran out of the classroom. Skinamarink is somewhat similar to that demonstration only way longer cause what I'm remembering was only 90 to 2 mins long, maybe shorter.

Skinamarink captures what a childhood trauma nightmare looks and feels like. However familiar it looks, something is very, deeply wrong, rooms go on forever, time has no meaning, you can't trust your parents, an authority figture is following and hurting you and you can't explain why, the people who are supposed to come rescue you aren't really listening and just get you into more trouble, and no matter how much you beg and scream and cry at the shadows that look at people, none of them will ever hear or help you. You can't escape. There are no doors to run out of, no windows to open and crawl out of, and even the familiar glow of a nightlight or television won't bring you any comfort. Then you wake up, you remember that was twenty years ago, and whatever was done to you still haunts you. You can't explain it. You're ashamed to seek therapy, because if you try to tell anyone else your fragmented memories of what happened, they won't believe you, it won't make sense to them, it will sound boring and normal or made-up and fictional. You know that no matter how old you get, no matter how many years pass, you will be forced back into that horrible memory next time you go to sleep, over and over and over, and the real world is too cruel to bother finding you and waking you up.

After this house id hate to see how scary koreys house is Finally got around to watching this online for free The film grain look is effective Its ambition is there making these kids look all around at the slightest sounds to the blackest portions of their surroundings There's truly something eerie to most having these same childhood fears The most basic stuff like tv static, a phone with a face on it or strange noises coming from the ceiling or walls can be quite unsettling This one will end up being divisive because it takes a new approach to low budget horror not relying too heavily on special effects but instead the imagination There's definitely scenes where it feels like it's padding so much not cutting away from an establishing shot long enough You could also take this as a metaphor for child and spousal abuse Gotta respect the originality it goes for Plus the movie's greatest advantage is you don't know what exactly is happening or why these kids are experiencing these strange occurrences Might've worked better as a short student film cause it will be testing most audience's patience for 100 min Yes this is more confounding than a straight up spook fest but it does go in a new direction than a lot of scary movies we are used to It definitely left me feeling uneasy hearkening back to the night terrors I used to have as a tyke It's the fact that something lurking in the darkest corners of our subconscious we can't decipher is what makes things so scary Heck the last scene leaves us with a sense of wondering but also afraid to actually know the answer 'Skinamarink' has mood, claustrophobia, and the slow horrific decay of childlike innocence that works as experimental horror albeit not everyone's taste

only thing terrifying about this movie is how boring, bad, pointless, yet still overhyped it is so i guess it is truly terrifying on many different levels! BRAVO! I FINALLY UNDERSTAND NOW!😂

I'm convinced people who say they like this movie only say they do because it seems avant-garde and abstract and makes them sound smarter if they do. This shit was a bad film school project that went viral. Nothing more. Shit's a Fuck You for me.

I watched it in two sittings…it was both boring and weirdly compelling. I also appreciate what the movie is and what they were going for, but I can’t say I enjoyed it. I don’t dislike it, have thought about it for days…anyway…I still want to see it again.

Obviously this film is going to be very polarizing as it is experimental and more of an experience than your typical horror movie. Personally, it touched something really dark that lives in my subconscious and it really does feel like a child's nightmare come to life. I thought it was very effective, creative and genuinely horrific but it's not going to be for everyone. I really appreciate that you guys could recognize its value and vision even if it wasn't your favorite. I think it's important to appreciate it: even if you didn't like it or even if you were bored. There's a really big difference between not liking the movie and saying it was essentially crap. It's a pretty incredible endeavor regardless and I think it needs to be recognized for that. COME UPSTAIRS 😱😅

It made me remember when I was a kid and had a high fever or the time I had a concussion as a kid and everything got weird and disjointed. It got across that unreality of being a kid and things being off in an incredibly way. I can certainly understand why it wouldn’t be for everyone and honestly it could have been a half hour shorter and been a great experimental film

Cool concept. Very shoddy execution. Felt asleep before the midway point. Almost as boring as British reality TV, and I am actually the target audience for this since I have had bad experiences alone at home.
