I agree wholeheartedly...AWESOME buyer's guide! This dude is finally helping me narrow down my decision after 2 years of contemplating this (not to mention seeing if the prices were going to drop, and they really haven't; they've been hovering between $48 and 55k the entire time). Now the only thing I have to decide is weather to go with the 2016 or newer AWD version, or go with the RWD. You see, my wife and I will be taking turns between that and a Porsche Macan Turbo. I know the RWD can be a handful, plus it rains a lot in Florida. She's used to the AWD stability of the Porsche, and it seems extremely safe on the highway, even in the pouring down rain; it's imperative I keep my wife safe with our choices, and just because I might like throw in the ass out and around corners, it could be pretty dangerous for her👍🏻

@DragonFireEngneering
@DragonFireEngneering 3 жыл бұрын
@@risktkr77 There was an issue with one of the active exhaust valves, the weather stripping was loose and the front air splitter was broken. All stuff mentioned on the video. The dealer replaced the splitter for me before I bought the car and the other issues were taken care of later under the factory warranty. Also if you are buying a car, have the AC serviced if possible. These cars use a relatively small charge of refrigerant and I had issues with the system freezing up. Again that was taken care of under warranty

1. Injectors: Fouling up. Prevent with additives. 2. Differential: Sludgy oil. Change often. The oil. Not the Diff. 3. Supercharger Coupler: Listen to engine cold from outside. If it rattles the rocks need changing. 4. Exhaust Actuator: Try restart. 5. Carpet sagging: Practice good hygene. 6. Panel misalignment. Communicattion (with dealer) is key. 7. Seat Bolsters. Every sports car has this problem. But this one doesnt.

Well done overview, thanks. For folks interested in purchasing an F-Type, I wanted to share my experience. I've owned 3. 2015 Type R, 2018 Type R, and currently drive a 2019 SVR. My daily, 10K miles per year commuting into NYC on crappy roads regardless of weather. I've literally had zero issues, including no bent wheels which is a miracle in this area. I've owned several high end sports cars. This model made me a Jag convert. For those that intend to track their car, I wouldn't recommend it. Not suited to that environment.

I have had two porsches and both after a 45mph hit would likelyhave hundreds of dollars in damage...wheel would just be the start of things. Subaru too.....these Jaguars (I have a v6 coupe) are amazing. Someday people will figure it out once they run from the hype of the 911 after a bore scoring issue....and these will be the next big thing.

I currently own two F-Types. There are three more very needed things to look for. 1) Has the water pump been replaced. They are a very common failure point. Probably 60% failure by 50k miles 2) Sticky buttons and 3) on coupes look for the leather pealing away from the gauge cluster. I have seen this as an issue in 15-17 coupes

The XE replaced my 2015 XF, which replaced my 2004 X-Type. I've had pretty good experience with Jags. On the other hand, I had a Taurus that had it's water pump fail catistrophically, taking out a lot of the engine, and my wife got a Fusion plug-in hybrid that we got replaced under the state's lemon law.

I purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 XE 35t in March of this year. It came with a 3 year warranty and only had 18K miles on it. I really love how it drives - plenty of power. Jags are beautiful cars. I've owned a few of them and yes in the past for every hour I drove the car, mechanic hubby was under the hood for four hours fixing stuff - mostly electronic issues. I think their reliability has definitely improved over the years.

Not mentioned was the "Y-pipe", the plastic coolant pipe located under the supercharger. It was originally a two-piece design but failed often enough that Jaguar redesigned it but didn't issue a recall, so previous cars didn't get updated. I just bought a 2015 F-Type R and am seriously considering fixing it preemptively to avoid both a slow or catastrophic coolant loss. The fix is not cheap due to its location, requiring that the supercharger be removed. Total cost of the fix will be $1500-$3000 depending who does the work.

Well done, good advice there! A couple of comments though from someone who's had the V6 engine for more than 3 years: - The most common problem by far with these engines wasn't mentioned in the video - the coolant system and water pump. The plastic coolant system pipes and water pumps fail on all these engines sooner or later. Unless those components have been replaced you always have to watch out for coolant leaks. Some parts have been redesigned by JLR throughout the years. - Another issue worth mentioning is the timing chains and tensioners. They may wear out over time and worst case lead to catastrophic engine failure. The chains and tensioners were redesigned two or three times throughout the production of the engines, so the newer the engine the lower the risk of that issue. - These are not Ford blocks. These engines do have some FoMoCo ancillaries but the block is 100% Jaguar and designed by Jaguar although it's assembled in a Ford engine plant in the UK. - Injector problems are probably mainly relevant in the US and other countries with low quality gas. In Europe we usually feed these engines 98 octane gas which is much better for the engine.
@skrrtgarage3922
@skrrtgarage3922 4 жыл бұрын
That’s really useful information! I have heard about the coolant and water pump issues, but I haven’t really heard much about timing chains or tensioners. Where did you hear the block wasn’t supplied from ford? I read that it was in a few different places but who knows. Thanks for the detailed write up, again this is good information.

Put ~30,000 miles on my 2015 F-Type R and never had no issues. I replaced it 2 years ago with a 2018 F-Type SVR. That car currently has just around 9,500 miles on it and has been in the shop 3 times for failed mass air flow sensors. My wife 2015 Jaguar XF has 32,000 miles and has NEVER been in the shop for repair. So, just like any other car, its reliability is hit or miss.

V6 version actually encounters much fewer engine problems due to less heat and better cooling (V6S). Besides that, I encountered these issues: 1. leaking diff, fix under warranty; 2. broken exhaust valve, fixed with FabSpeed parts; 3. passenger side window switch acting funny when temperature drop below 20F; 4. cargo bay cover is awful. I daily drive my V6S and it's been very reliable besides those little things. Diff never leaked again after fix. V8 encounters mostly heat soak and broken pipes, especially in summer and on track.

@williamsshen

@@skrrtgarage3922 I did not encounter heat soak issue with my car for a full day track event in NJMP. Most V8 f type encounter heat issue around an hour or so in summer temperature, as the intercooler is not built for hard use. I believe V6S uses the same intercooler thus better cooling. For FabSpeed stuff, I commissioned a local fabrication shop to cut the old valve out and weld the new one in, in which rattle noise disappeared and pop and crack sound more aggressive.

Great video! I bought the new 2018 F Type R out of the showroom and noticed the carpet was detached and falling off under the console on the passenger side a few weeks after driving it so when I got my stereo upgraded 3 months ago they replaced the passenger side carpet. Also those rings that hold the shield over the truck broke off. It broke the first month and I barely even opened the trunk. The other thing I would like to mention is I had only 15,000 miles on my car and my back tires became so bald that I just replaced them with new P Zeros for almost 1,000. Other than these things I absolutely love the car! I enjoy driving everyday! I’ve owned many sport cars and have to say it’s the most fun car I’ve ever owned 👍🏻😀

Hi there from the UK. You've definitely saved a lot of people a lot of time and effort covering these issues. I've never been a Jag fan as I do hark back to the bad old days of reliability and the "pipe and slippers" image of the old cars but I'm considering moving over to a 3L V6 R-Dynamic. I'm a Porsche Cayman owner of 5 years at present and I've always thought that I've arrived at the pinnacle of my car ownership as the Cayman is just so good, but I've always admired those gorgeous looks of the F-Type and was surprised at how affordable they are. I may come to regret it if I leave Porsche and join Jag but what gets me interested is the fact that my budget of around £45k will allow me to get an 2019 F-Type with extremely low miles of say 15-20k as opposed to a 2010 Porsche 911 with around 60k miles on it. Do I go for the older 911 with virtually no depreciation and possibly investment potential along with its bullet proof build and reputation or the newer F-Type. ?
@skrrtgarage3922
@skrrtgarage3922 2 жыл бұрын
That is a question for the ages haha. I think it depends on your budget. The Porsche is a known commodity with seemingly fixed prices, whereas the Jag may suffer a little depreciation.. but who knows it may hold steady. The beauty about cars is that you can change them. Its not like a marriage or anything. I would recommend you try the Jag.. if you dont love it. you can switch back to a Porsche pretty quickly.

Owned a 2016 F type S. It looked fabulous, it drove and handled very well, the exhaust sound was awesome. Unfortunately it lacked much quality. Within 3 months the speakers started to crack and rattle/ It developed multiple interior noises and crackles. The start push button and the shift lever coating started to peel off. I just coudn't live with all of the quality issues so I unloaded it and pought a porsche. The quality of the porsche is head and shoulder above the Jag. A lot would have to change before I would consider another Jaguar.

I had the same 2016 f type s and totally agree that it really lacked quality. Everything David mentioned happened to me ...speaker rattles, gear lever fell apart,rear view mirror fell off leather had flaws in it, paint had runs in it, and more.....like all the body panels were removed as they were out of alignment. Went with Porsche also different class. I would never ever ever buy another Jaguar....... But let’s face it ...they will be out of business in the next 10 years.....

I was shocked at its reliability and the dang thing still looks cool all these years later. Think Ford own them then. I’m a PORSCHE guy but I am switching to the F...gonna get one soon. Yeah, your advice is spot and that's what I do too when I make an important purchase: Research. You can still follow your heart and get a good vehicle or product of your favorite brand or styling if you do your research, take your time, find the right one, know what you are getting and ready to deal with it. You will definitely enjoy it in the end!

Love it and the 5.0 tire n/ a engine does not need turbos to get the business done ! Exhaust noise is intoxicating as well . The Lexus has rear steering and wow Torsen rear end , bullet proof !!! I owned a f type and I’ll take the Lexus hands down and will last 10 years and appreciate in value where as the f type just flops after warranty, just saying ! Great video though

The LC is about 40k more on the used market. You're comparing cars in completely different price classes. The LC is obviously superior in many ways, but unaffordable for those researching early F-Types.

Another great video and Let’s be honest, if clogged up injectors (normally caused by using regular gas) and having to change the diff oil at 40k is the only issues with any car its amazing. 1 issue you haven’t mentioned that I have is the battery fault. Mine is a 2017 FtypeR and the low battery warning came on a few times, 4 months after purchase and the dealer advised that this is a common issue with the battery, they checked the battery and had approval to change under warrantee, roll forward another 6 months and the fame fault again, Its a common enough issue that dealerships have a special tool to test the batteries and send the info back to the head office so anyone with a failing battery or low power should definitely push to get it replaced. Drive safe and enjoy your R

100% correct about the differential issue. I bought the car in October of last year and by January I could hear the diff going out. I was outside the factory warranty but luckily had purchased a 3rd party warranty and they actually covered it. Originally they thought it was the wheel bearings so they replaced those first then decided it was the diff. That got replaced too. Overall cost to me was $100. Cost to the warranty company.... $6K!

Great video mate, had my 2017 Coupe 6 days before the Electronic Parking Brake started showing a fault message. Turned out to be the rear right parking brake motor was stuck on and wouldn’t disengage. Following some forum surfing, this turned out to be quite a common Jag issue, Simple motor replacement, but still adore it and think it’s one of the best looking (and sounding...!) cars of all time. When it’s that pretty, you can forgive it almost anything.

I spent 4 years looking for a XK.. wanted the room, Checked out the Forums, weeks & weeks to read them all, saw all the videos. You want to know about Jaguar...I can tell you. only one fault with the 07, (duck bill) and it was a easy fix, 10 minutes. Look that one up.... ha, ha. I found one, 2007, 41000 miles, 4.2 V8, never seen the rain, showroom ready, 1 of 97 Winter Gold , convertible , 3 states away.. read up on it, have done 5 car shows with it , love the car . Have had 4 other sports cars, by far this Jaguar tops them all,, room, I'm, (6'3" 230 lbs) You can do a 3 week trip in it ,two people.. you can't in the F- type. I know of no other GT car that for this kind money and style that you can have this much fun in... with out going way over 100,000.00.. Maybe the C8 Vett. 85,000.00 good set-up. And maybe a weekend trip for two. but there again there are Vett's everywhere. the F-type is a super car, but not for any long road trips.. And Ford owned Jaguar from 1996 to 2008, they saved Jaguar, and made it one great car to have.. You get looks everywhere you go. and like any car, you take care of it and it will run forever.. See you on the road..... the guy with a smile from ear to ear..loving the ride.

I have a 2011 XJ-R with the same supercharged V8 engine (470 HP). Almost a decade old, 80K miles, only thing I've replaced is the water pump. Purrs like a kitten and roars like a --- well --- you know. :-) Honestly I never heard of the injectors being an issue on these engines before the F-Type R so probably a new design to give you the "pops and crackles" that mine does not have. I also have a 2012 XK-R with the same engine (510 HP) and it is at 50K miles and I've never replaced anything yet. No issue with either E-Diff likely because they are down 75-100 HP on the F-Type R V8 (and I don't drive either like a crazy man!). The transmission is ZF and is basically bulletproof; I did the 70K mile service just as a precaution----it shifted just as smoothly before the service as after. In my experience the parts for Jags are expensive but the labor is reasonable; they are not as complicated to work on as an Audi for example. These are not inexpensive cars but if you can afford a $50K-$90K car, you can easily afford to maintain it and keep it running well. No reason you should not be getting 150K miles of service on a Jag V8 (I have not had experience with the 6 or 4 cylinder engines). Enjoy!!

I completely agree with all things you’ve pointed out Trevor. It does really make me wonder if the tune of “cracks and burbles” is causing the injector issues. It makes me happy to hear your cars are running strong, I’m sure a lot of that is because you take care of them!

A good overview of the F-Type,one thing i would add is the injector failure on the V8 is as you say fairly common,however in most occasions the Injectors seize in the cylinder head & the only way to remove them then,is a cylinder head removal,which of course would run to a very costly repair bill.

The 3M weatherstrip glue did the trick. I also just had my dealer implement a couple of the Technical Bulletin’s for rattles you flashed up on the forums. I've literally been contemplating this car for going on 2 years, and you are absolutely helping me narrow down my decision. The main question I have for you though, is if you had to do it all over again, would you go with the 2016 AWD version, or stick with the RWD? My next question is if I choose to go with the all-wheel drive version, do I now have twice the chance for the differential issue having 2 differentials on board? Thanks a TON brother...keep up the AWESOME work! Scott
@skrrtgarage3922

I really appreciate that man! I would still go RWD.. the 2016 R with AWD is definitely the safer option if your region snows/rains all the time. Also, the 2016 has slightly better instrument cluster. But the 2015 R has hydrolic steering which is superior and I really like RWD cars, I love being able to do a little burnout or slide and this car is amazing at that. Lastly the 15 R is the fastest amongst all f types, if you can my SVR vs R video the 2015 R won the rolling races. The front differential is far less likely to have issues but should still be checked just like the rear diff. Either way you can’t go wrong, let me know what you think!
