It should have been called Tanguy et Laverdure anyways (also in French) - because that's the comic series it is based on. Maybe that's also a reason why they used Mirages instead of Rafales - the comics are based on Mirages

Mover, I'm french military and private pilot, I was glad you enjoyed the movie overall. Though it's unrealistic for sure, the aerial footage is sublime. Holds a special place in my heart. That said, be aware that the comms and dialogs in the french version are much more realistic and less cheesy than they are in the english dubbed version. Thanks for reviewing it honestly and not french-bash like many others would have done.

I'm not gonna lie, i'm Italian so obviously i cant help but being biased against the cousins. So... CdA, imho, is almost as good as Top Gun as an air combat movie. Dubs ruin the movie, like usual really, so watch it in french with subtitles for those who didin't. Actually, i have some friends who enjoyed this more then Top Gun once i showed them the subtitled version. Obviously, we will never have a realistic movie about jet fighters. Radio comms are too "boring" for a cinema audience, the engagement are not that thrilling and directors would still be limited by how much an air force is willing to give to them. I'm stillm hoping for a sequel with Rafales

@Chrinik
@Chrinik 4 жыл бұрын
@@migga86 You wouldn't believe how much work it is to actually translate things with the same meaning. The first draft is very often a quite nonsensical direct translation...I heard a couple dub directors complain that often the script of a US war movie that often contains the word "INCOMING!!!", the first time round would contain the line "Come in" which...if you do not know the context or care about it, is an obvious mistranslation. So if the dub is cheap...weeeellllll... And no, translators/ VAs do not often get to see the movie they work on...
@migga86
@migga86 4 жыл бұрын
@@Chrinik I've seen a documentary about it. When the translators work through a script they usually create a relatively literal translation as well as write down side notes about context or other variants. This is then used by another person to create the dialogue part for the VO actors. Only then the VO actor goes in and tries to lip-sync it if it's a real people movie or just delivers his lines on anime and some special hush-hush movies. Even then they tend to get the lines/scenes out of sequence, so they are sometimes confused about what lines they deliver. So it has two places where it can be pushed into the wrong direction. It also highly depends on how detailed the script is. If it's missing the context of "Fighter plane pulls up to hostile plane" before that line, the joke will get missed on the translation. It's not a glorious job and the creative liberties for the VO actors are sometimes very limited - some times because of the low budget for the translation and some times because of too compartmentalized scenes.
@Chrinik
@Chrinik 4 жыл бұрын
@@migga86 And it's thankless work since you are never going to be as famous as an actor nor get paid nearly as much, despite in some countries being fairly famous and recognizable if they get cast as "the voice" of some big name celebrity. But for a niche movie like this, I assume the dubbing budget wasn't very big.

The story is a bit cheesy, but most of the air footage are real, they modified a 2000L wing tank to put cameras in it, and put under a Mirage 2000B wing (twin seat). The camera guy was in the backseat. The actors did a few flights to know how it’s like, but cockpit scenes are fake off course. The movie is using Mirage 2000C (Fox 1 shooter), which is second line now. But the cockpits shown in the movie is Mirage 2000-5F (Fox 3 shooter). The Mirage 2000 production was already shut down when the movie was produced.

@sparrowlt

partly yes partly not.. the dogfight itself was mostly CGI..but they did managed to film some formations over Paris during bastille day (the formation with the tankers and multiple fighters are real).. they filmed aerial "background" footage but the dpogfight itself was "CGId" into and it shows as you can tell there is something wrong , also why they avoided showing close ups of the Mirages as much as posible.. the rest of the movie was over 95% real footage wich is impressive .. I wish they had used a Rafale instead of a 2000 in the first dogfight as while i love the 2000 you became a bit "too much" of it in this movie as its nearly the sole plane used

By the way the "ID" around 9:30 is, just like the "decoy" a very poor translation In the French version they use the english word "Flares, Flares" (the French word is "Leurres" which translates to "decoy" so it's a bit weird) In the original version the guy says "Bonjour monsieur, gendarmerie nationale" which basically means "Hello sir, this is the police" I think a better translation for this joke would be something like "goodday sir, do you know why I pulled you over?" Honestly I think the dubbing was rushed And now that I've watched it all I'm glad you liked it, it's my favorite aviation movie Nothing to do with the fact that I'm French, I don't see why anoyone would think that ^^

@Patrick Brennan Mirages are great fighters. Originally designed as interceptors against Soviet bombers they climb faster than most jets. They became multi role with time though, but they are in use in different air forces. They are used in operations with allies today with all of their use I think the last we lost was back in Kosovo. And we only lost one back then
@spebonne
@spebonne 4 жыл бұрын
Also, Mirages can be placed on a 2minutes launch alert where other fighters will be on a 5 minute alert. That was made because France wasn't part of NATO during the cold war. After 9 11, we have put mirages back on a 2min alert ready to be started and launched in 2 minutes. Last year they broke a few windows north of Paris launching to intercept a private jet who wasn't responding. Made the national news here

Sky Fighters (2005) The flight sequences from the film were all filmed with actual planes and aerial photography, without the use of CGI. In order to capture the high-speed maneuvers, a specially-designed camera was attached to a Mirage 2000 aircraft which then tailed the 'star planes' as they flew, for only another Mirage 2000 could actually fly at speeds that matched the planes being filmed. The traditional film camera, which was specially constructed with lenses facing forward, backward, to the side, and downward, was installed inside an empty fuel pod and built by Dassault, the aircraft consortium which constructed the Mirage 2000. Using a digital HD camera had been considered early on, but because of its size, it was simply too large to be squeezed into the tank. Because of space requirements, the pod camera could only hold 4 minutes of film, which had to be specially shielded from the elements and sealed in an airtight compartment to prevent the pressure and temperature differences at altitude from damaging it. In addition, the camera could not be controlled by hand, as it was located within the tank, nor could it be controlled electronically by wire, as the tank had to be easily detachable from the plane so it could be swapped from one Mirage 2000 to another on refueling to prevent the daily shooting schedule from falling behind. Thus, a special radio control system was devised, so that the pilot of the Mirage 2000 could activate the camera at will. However, this too had many problems to work out, as the radio frequency could not interfere with the regular operations of the aircraft, nor could it possibly jam air-to-ground communications. Finally, however, a proper system was devised to allow the camera to be activated remotely. For tracking shots where using the Mirage 2000 camera was not practical, a Lear jet was flown in from Southern California in the United States, and used for about a week at great expense. Due to all these concerns and complications, director Gérard Pirès and his aerial-photography team had to carefully plan each shot with storyboards, something the director normally does not do. However, he said in a question and answer session after the film's screening on at the City of Lights - City of Angels Los Angeles Film Festival on April 7th, 2006 that the time limitations on the film actually did not hinder production, as they required thought and economy towards the shots being attempted, and also as the Mirage 2000 plane itself had to refuel every 45 minutes. The director took great pride in the fact that he was able to use this camera to capture the incredible look and feeling of flight, without resorting to using the computer to manipulate his images. www.imdb.com/title/tt0421974/trivia?item=tr0700888

HAHAHA Seeing the English version is hilarious! Your French was pretty good :) 14:13 "Hello!" hahahahha At 16:12 and onward, the woman in the AlphaJet is sort of his "boss" and it's her first time in a fighter jet. She's basically trying to screw him over for shooting that black Mirage 2000 at the beginning, so he's showing her what it feels like to be in a dogfight. The actress was actually in the plane doing all the stunts, I believe (you can see her skin reacts to Gs). The film was made in partnership with the Armée de l'Air (that's why it sounds like a advert at times and looks awesome) and so the main cast had the opportunity to fly (passenger) in jets with actual fighter pilots. The entirety of the scenes where you see planes flying are real (except maybe the ones above Paris, they do look fake to me too), only the ones from inside the cockpits when you see the actor's face are in a studio. In order to shoot the aerial scenes, they used a modified fuel tank, or something along those lines, with cameras in it. As you said, the film is a bit cheesy at times, even with the real voices, but the flying scenes are just amazingly beautiful. And the Mirage 2000 is the most beautiful plane ever (French bias haha).

So this movie was not made by the French Air Force, but with their participation. They offered several single and dual seater Mirages, a couple of Alpha Jets, a Learjet, and C-160 Transall and of course the required pilots to go with it. In order to shoot the jet sequences, the C-160 and Learjet were used for large shots but the majority were done using a dual seater Mirage modified by the manufacturer Dassault : the drop tanks were modified to house cameras, and the WSO cockpit was reconfigured to monitor and control the cameras. The final scene above Paris was filmed during the rehersal of the Air Force parade run for the French National Day (July 14th). Oh and this movie is an adaptation of an old french comic book series called (of course) "Les Chevaliers Du Ciel".

I was really impressed. I'm going to have to watch the whole movie. I did a little reading and not only was the movie supported by the French Air Force, but they modified the safety regs for filming. Supposedly they reduced the minimum altitude requirements to 3 meters and minimum spacing to 1 meter, though I'd hazard a guess that wasn't over populated areas. Looks like they were pretty dedicated to showing off the Mirage, and did a good job of it.

From an aerial cinematography standpoint this is probably one of the best jet movies I've ever seen. I am French and you made me laugh so much! (physics don't apply in France XD) :) The aerial scenes are incredible, but the movie itself is a cliché as usual... I don't understand why directors always totally fuck up the cockpit scenes with the background moving like they're in a space ship, that sucks. my dad actually flown the A340 in this movie when he was a test pilot for Airbus, and he gave me a compilation of the aerial scenes. He had a poor opinion on the movie after being invited to the premiere with the defense minister and other hipsters of the kind. I actually never watched it because I knew I'd be disappointed as an aviation enthusiast, but I watched the aircrafts formation flying scenes a couple times and it still gives me the shivers! heads up to the video team, and the pilots off course. The Mirage is one of the most beautiful fighters I've seen, along with the F-16 and F-14.
