I wanna add that ibxtoycat was one of the first pioneers to this "Minecraft experiment" format with his fanbase. He originally started minecraft social experiment ideas just like MagicGum 5 years ago, (3 years before MagicGum) with Minecraft realms and having his fan base sorta larping to the idea with his social experiments. This itself was more of a beta version of "Minecraft Civilizations", but his input did make me wonder and believe that he is one of the reasons why Civilization videos are so popular today even if people might not realize or remember. His Minecraft Communist Server Experiment is one of the most popular videos on his channel.

I was one of the original people that watched magicgum from his first theory videos to his SMP too! Yeah.. unfortunately it was a fail. Despite how much of a mess it was, it is still THE favorite smp I have ever played on. I have tried finding another SMP over the years to find the same vibe I've gotten from his trapped smp to no avail. The fact that mobs could actually kill you. The fact that death have real consequences. The sense of danger and the importance of allies. Trust and betrayal, allies and enemies... There is a friend that I still actively talk to till this date I met through that smp! It will forever have a special place in my heart. We often talk back about it and documents everything we can find about it. Due to it being a fail, its history is pretty much erased off the internet, and nobody knew what happened in it aside from the participants. I'm so glad you made this video! I met my group on magic's discord then we stuck together throughout the whole smp. The hiding type with underground bases. Nothing can ever replicate the feeling of having clown's streams on the backgroud while panicking, calling the whole team on at 2am because clown raided our base. Checking his and vandrayk's cords live, if we are ever getting close to him. NOTHING. Can ever replicate the feeling when one of our most trusted member for 1 month turned out to be CLOWN's friend and spy, and the one that's been ratting out our cords the whole time. Clown made a video on that entire situation that I would kill to watch again. It is privated after he joined lifesteal (very fair as the quality doesn't catch up at all). Clown blew up shortly after that, very deserved from his sheer pvp skills. If only there is a way to see old vods from magic's and clown's streams. After claiming blocks became a thing the server died down a lot. Despite our trapping strategies we still got bullied hard by clown and kings of the end. I wasn't lucky enough to get into the later events magic made. I've witnessed my friend participate in some tho. Was really fun to watch as well. I've never participated in Ish's events. However, his content is the only other that reminded me of magic's. It is a lot more storytelling focused as you said, makes them easy to attach to and pick a team to root for! Apologies for wall of text haha. Me and my friend as two nerds has been trying to document as much things from the trapped smp as possible. I really shocked to see a 2024 video to talk about it. I still haven't given up on civilization videos (that's why I'm here, obviously). Maybe one day someone can be as great as those two had done...

The funniest thing about the SMP to me is how we went through like 5 months of planning for the server to be taken offline after 3 months. For me, the mobs were kind of a pain point in my experience with the SMP, as I really focused down on the faction aspect of the server, and although I was fine with the death ban, it was made worse when you didn't have any idea of what the plug-in mobs could do mechanically. I still wish I was able to get some more hours in before it was shutdown though, I miss running EON, making textures for the server's pack and I miss Magic's community being active.

I don't think he had any actual direct influence on the rise of Civilization videos, but I want to throw in an honorable mention of ibxtoycat. His "Realm Experiment" videos were kind of a prototype version of these civ events, and he did them years before MagicGum started the ball rolling with this trend. A somewhat interesting anecdote, I've been supremely interested in this genre/concept for over a decade. I always had big ideas about it, but being a random nobody, I obviously didn't have the resources to make anything happen myself. That's how I found ibxtoycat's videos, and also how I found Ish's first civilization video. Like a month or so after Ish posted his first civ video, right as it was just starting to catch on but still only had a handful thousand views, I actually found it by specifically searching for a Minecraft civilization video, when the genre didn't even really exist yet.

Thank you for making this video. I was curious to see what the history behind this somewhat shortlived trend was. I keep coming back to these videos like once a year. Honestly I keep rewatching Ish's videos the most. The storytelling and cinematography are great and I keep wondering when another one is coming out. But man, I didn't consider that a lot of Ish's repeat participants are friends, but it makes sense. Not that I view that as rigging the experiment really, but in a way it is kind of necessary, especially if you have 1000 people and most of them would either do their own thing or troll relentlessly unless shown something interesting they could do instead. I know these are a lot of work to do, but I kind of hope they keep happening in some form or another. The storyline of Ish's previous civilization experiment was massive enough that some other participants felt compelled to tell their own perspectives and as someone in one of those videos said, this is exactly how civilizations, history, oral traditions form. Like if Ish ever does another one, I have an expectation that there will be a Sultanate at the very least and there will always be individuals that seek to obtain power by any means.

There's this other Minecraft civilization community that quite underrated deserves to be mentioned Stoneworks Organized cities Actual politics Wars with well planned tactics Even religion Having 10,000 wiki pages of server history, in the last 4 REAL LIFE YEARS. It's insane It may be what MagicGum has been trying to replicate. Actually civilizations in Minecraft that act and function like a real nation. I genuinely wonder if he knows about it. He would probably love it Its not just 4 islands with different biomes. (Which they actually made fun of lol) But an actual map with its own geography, each state, kingdom, empire having their own respective land and their own respective borders. The scale itself far massive than any civilization event anyone has ever made even combined. The thing is tho, they're not that we'll known despite the rise of Minecraft civilization. Unlike events that are filmed LIVE, various people having their own POVs and their own recorded footage, admins watching everything 24/7, in stoneworks, they do actual documents which is not as exciting. They also seem to limit their players more on creative freedom. They can still build great structures in their respective land and all but seem to take things more "seriously" in a sense. I personally don't know how it works since I don't know that much and only recently discovered them, but I think there's more restrictions that force players to socialize and work together, which makes sense to prevent divide and solo players causing havoc. I honestly think you should cover a video about them. They kinda deserve it, as well as asking them how things work unlike in regular Minecraft civilization people can immediately be stacked as hell if put enough effort. Hope you see this

As someone who plays on the server, people can do pretty much whatever they want (unless it's against the rules which aren't too restrictive, mostly about cheating and toxicity). There's nothing stopping me from making the town hall a dirt hut. Some groups also have varying degrees of freedoms. Some are more strict, while other let people do what they want as long as they contribute. People could run off and set up a claim(a territory which costs 10k), but most eventually get gobbled up by bigger groups if they don't get enough support. It's more competition that does that, because what nation would you rather join? A nation made up of dirt huts or a nation with amazing builds? Most would join the latter so those would survive while the former would collapse. Also eventually a builder would come along and fix things up.

@lolactus89084 ай бұрын
@@royalistproductions The reason nobody talks about Spoke's videos is because they had nothing to do with the heavy wave of civilization videos. As someone who watched and even participated in his events, they were structured very differently from MagicGum, Ish, SpeedSilver, and even Sword. Spoke's events had no influence outside of his channel really and the civilization video surge only popped up because of MagicGum's vid which is why they all incorporate elements of his original vid and none from Spoke's.

Fantastic lil history video. I got really into MindOfNeo's event videos for the plotlines and interesting custom mods, but the format and hashtags definitely baffled me since those events were less of a civilization and more of a battle royale. Now i know what sprung up my new favorite video genre 😂

This video isn’t fully correct (as far as I know) SpokeisHere actually uploaded a civilization video months prior to MagicGum. (Spoke: APR. 30TH. 2021) (MGum: AUG. 9TH. 2021). However while spoke (as far as I know) made the genre, MagicGum was the one who really pushed it and made it as popular as it is. So I’d say both deserve partial credit in their own categories. (I will note that Magic didn’t make his video because of Spoke, he just uploaded after Spoke making it the “first” irrelevant.)

I miss civilization videos. No one does them anymore. I really think it’s like the best Minecraft content honestly. I hate SMP and shit. Like over hour long hard-core survival Minecraft I built this mega base, blah blah blah. Minecraft civilization even some word staged was unique fresh take on Minecraft content and it brought a sense of community in every video which I enjoyed.

I'm definitely late to the civilization video trend. I only got into it a few days ago, who knew it had been going on for two years now and is starting to die. Some of the civilization videos are really interesting, the stories are amazing and filled with lore. They definitely blew up on Minecraft KZbin for a bit, I wonder which trend will be next! :D

Yeah I got into these kinds of videos a year or two ago, but my personal favorites are definitely IGBLON’s ones. Those over edited videos have another level of storytelling. Besides that though I got into the rabbit hole of Sword4000 purge and hunger games videos.
