I visited Slab City about 4 months ago. First thing I noticed was that Salvation Mountain looks like crap since Leonard passed away. He took much better care of it. Next thing I noticed was that it looked like no one picked up trash any more - especially on the way down to the library. I know this is the last stop for a lot of poor people and those trying to really get away from it all, but I took it off my list as a place to spend a few days.

I hope you stop in and see the library. Thanks for showing some of the "real"slabs, most folks only video the Range, East Jesus and Salvation Mt. They never bother to show what the rest of the slabs are like. Hope you have fun.

I've always wondered what Slab City looks like. I'm looking forward to part 2. The art in places like this is always so interesting. As far as safety goes, it's a good bet that everyone out there just wants to be left alone and do their own thing. They aren't really paying any unnecessary attention to anyone else outside of staying aware of their surroundings. In college and for a year or two afterward, I lived with a roommate in the ghetto part of my town and we never locked our door, because no one had anything worth stealing in our neighborhood, including us. :D We made friends with the homeless in the area. I never once felt unsafe. A healthy amount of awareness is, well, healthy but outright fear comes from misunderstanding, or as you said, believing the media's fear mongering. And, I'll have to check out the link to your new gear to see if it might be something I might could use. I might need me something a little better than my Canon point-and-shoot if I ever convince myself to brave the land of youtube.

CAROLYYYYN! Great job, despite equipment SNAFUs. WOW! So, that's Slab City. Every time I see vid of it, it offers a whole new perspective. First read about it in the Sunday LA Times many years ago. They detailed the whole Imperial Valley area including the Salton Sea, Imperial Valley agriculture, Slab City, Salvation Mountain, etc. For those who are curious, Slab City started out as a WW II Marine Corps training facility, Camp Dunlap. Later abandoned, Camp Dunlap fell into disrepair, the only remnants being the concrete slabs that the barracks were built on. Since then, it's been used by RVers, squatters, artists and others who've sought refuge from the hectic world outside. (Should sound familiar with anyone who knows Carolyn's story). Thank you, Carolyn! You promised, and you delivered. It's an amazing place, alrighty-right.

Thank you very much Dave! Thanks for the info too.. planned on putting some history in the next couple of vids. you saved me some research!!
@daveogarf7 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome, Ms. Friendly! :-D A little further info.: Apparently, there's an active bombing range nearby. To the east are the Chocolate Mountains, and a long-abandoned rail line connects the Eagle Mountain Iron Mine, owned by shipbuilding magnate, Henry J. Kaiser, to the coast. There are rumors that Slab City may be sold; nothing definite yet. Again - Yes, it looks decrepit and like a dumping ground, but if one can stand the up to 120-degree summer heat, it is possible to live there year-round as a few hardy souls do. Bleepnsheep is right about poverty: there are no facilities - no water, electricity, sewers, food or fuel. It's kind of the epitome of self-sufficiency, and perfect for Our Lady of the Lone Journey. ;-) Oh! And Capone.
@daveogarf7 жыл бұрын
If I may, just ran across this quote from Henry J Kaiser hisself: "Live daringly, boldly, fearlessly. Taste the relish to be found in competition -- in having to put forth the best within you to match the deeds of risk-taking, hard-working competitors." Henry J. Kaiser, industrialist

While I've not made the move into RV living here in Australia just yet, I've a distinct feeling it will not be long, particularly if I keep watching your vids. The roads and terrain remind me of field training exercises (FTX) I was in at Fort Bliss ('81-'83) the road around 8:30 reminds me of the tank trails we drove through,and like you sometimes had to walk the area to make sure we didn't hit soft sand and get stuck in our deuce and a half (2.5 ton trucks) or five tons. The bad thing was sometimes we didn't have strip maps and you had to make sure you kept up in the convoy especially at night - that was stressful, especially before the advent of night vision technologies. Thank you for taking us along!

I would go there just because it's there. It's what adventure is about. As long as the souls are good i look pass what it looks like. She was only visiting the place and not to stay there. Living free with nature has an appeal that is very attractive. Explore different places you learn more about the world and those in it.

What's the deal with Slab City? Nomadic Fanatic did a video when he was there but this doesn't look anything like his video. Is it a dangerous place? Just curious!😜

Wow, interesting place. Looking forward to the other two videos. Am curious as to what the tats are. The big one looks almost like a phoenix. Eventually I'll have my dragon on my back between my shoulder blades.

no, it looks like most of the world everyone in North America is afraid of with a LOT of creative peasants outside the system. Evolve, or assimilate into the corporateocracy

ok, no. the music sucks. I find it difficult to believe anyone prefers it to either silence or the expected, associated sounds.

Why all the used tires all over the place? Is there garbage pick up, place looks REALLY trashy, or is that the whole point of Slab City?

Hey, you made a good video. That music is magic, along with the tattoo, and the attitude. Nothing to fear but fear itself. Enter the portal.

I think its amazing what you've done and are doing! Its cool how you bring us all along with you on your journeys/adventures. And no joke, in the not too distant future, I think I may be doing the same thing. I love the outdoors and travelling, and so does my dog. All the best, safe travels.

I would love to see it, but would never camp there alone. You are braver than I. In the past there have been several loose dogs, so I would keep an eye on Capone. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences.
