In the tire tracks the snow is compacted, less insulating. So the heat in the groud shows up. Snow can be a good insulator, think igloo.

Yes uncompacted snow is full of small air pocket. And steady air is a great insulator. It's the same in the wool or foam we're using to insulate.

Color (white snow) and structure of the material (compacted, flatter snow) influence how much radiation is emitted. You have to calibrate the thermal camera to compensate for different materials. The snow was probably under 0°C, it just emitted as much radiation as a 17°C grey matte object, so the camera thought it is warmer. Also why we shouldn't melt the ice caps. They reflect a lot of radiation.

Infrared cameras can detect old tire tracks in snow because the tracks have different thermal properties than the surrounding snow. The compression from the tires alters the snow's insulation and heat conduction characteristics, making the tracks stand out in infrared imaging, even if they're quite old and there's no actual temperature difference.
@Tshiv26
@Tshiv26 9 ай бұрын
There is a temperature difference. The ground is warm and yes compacted snow is not an insulator as good as uncompacted snow. So there is more heat coming through the tire tracks from the ground than coming through the untouched snow.

This I think is a great example reminder that what everyone calls a "thermal camera" is really just a camera that can see in the long wavelength IR. Then the temperature is computed assuming that the material is emitting black body radiation of the brightness the camera sees within the wavelength band it is sensitive to. This means everything that you know about cameras applies. Eg mirrors, white/black objects (different emissivity), lenses (need to be made of weird materials, but do work) all will still affect the camera.

in the specific scenario of Northern Norway in mid-December with temperatures around -30°C, it is more likely that tire tracks in snow would be visible on an infrared camera due to differences in the thermal properties of compressed versus uncompressed snow, rather than due to ground warming. The extreme cold conditions make it less probable for the ground to provide a significant heat source that would create a temperature difference detectable by infrared imaging.@@Tshiv26

The reason for the difference in temperature in the snow is that water is great at transferring heat, and that’s also the reason why sweating works if you’re hot, or your hands feels colder if they’re wet, you’re essentially leaking heat through the moisture. Air on the other hand is not very good at transferring heat, which is why we use it for insulation. Insulation is basically just a matter of trapping a much air as possible in a place where it is not disturbed. Undisturbed snow is 10% water and 90% air, so it will not readily transfer heat, which is also why snow can take a long time to melt. What happens when you drive over the snow is that you compact it, essentially removing some of the air from the snow, giving it a higher ability to transfer heat from the ground into the atmosphere, which again consist of mostly air (and some water vapor), so the heat gets “stuck” in the compacted snow.

Thanks Björn for this content! The effort you put into this is unique! I too will probably buy an Ioniq 28 kWh. I already own a FL model with 38 kWh, but as a winter car the 28 kWh ioniq seems to be better on longer journeys. But I would like to mention again that sleeping in the Ioniq works really well. The floor is completely flat, you don't have to level anything, just put a mattress on it. I slept in the Ioniq Facelift for a full 14 days in the summer. Of course it will be uncomfortable in winter at -30°C, but good in summer. In summer you can also stretch out, if you are no taller than 1.80m.

Closing the vents you don't need and setting the ventilation to blow all the air towards the passenger can massively help with bringing more heat towards the back. I usually close the vents next to the door and point the middle vents center straight towards the back. Depending on the car you can close all the front vents and thus get massive airflow in the rear vents. It will increase noise but it will be much more efficient, too

Urine also contains salt which slows down freezing but if you have a dog you should have already noticed that it does not freeze instantly ;) BTW: I must admit it was pretty crazy to film that Bjørn =] 🤪 About those "warmer" tire tracks my guess would be that surface is less porous (so the packed snow contains less cold air and is more reflective) which might affect FLIR camera readings. 👍

It could be the heat from the ground like mentioned by others. Reflection has a big impact on thermal cameras. Where the snow is compacted it reflects more, so you get false readings. The same goes for the measurements for the window blinds. Try to put a piece of mat tape on the inside next time to get correct measurements. Project Of Science (channel about campervan stuff) made a cool video about window blinds where this is explained.

In Hyundai lower-priced fossils, the rear passenger vents will shut if u select Floor-level vent modes, and the AUTO will select Floor-level mode for most of the time if it thinks it’s pulling more air through the hot pipes and less from the A/C for humidity control. Because it has fans only under the dash, rear vents are weak. So, shut some front vents even if u select bidirectional or face-level modes. Maybe they put the same system in older Ionic models.

Infrared thermometers and cameras only show correct readings from non-reflective matte black surfaces. You’re getting reflections of sunlight off the snow that is throwing off the temperature readings. Real temperature of the tire tracks is exactly the same as the untouched snow around it. Shiny metal objects can also show reflections of your own body heat when trying to measure with thermal camera.

There was no sunlight on the ground. The reason the tracks are warmer is already explained. Compacted snow does not insulate as good as loose snow, so the heat from ground makes them warmer. Even when the ground is frozen, it's still significantly warmer than the air.

My grandfather, who had the opportunity to experience winters in Russia when temperatures dropped well below -40°C, claimed that the spit falls to the ground as a piece of ice only at approximately -45°C. He didn't mention peeing, but it would probably be at an even lower temperature. I have also heard stories about icy Siberian fog, which hangs in the air like some kind of ice airgel - a person walking in such fog creates a clearly visible corridor behind him. Where the corridor ends, you will find a dead body in the spring. Quite suggestively scary, isn't it? However, at around -30° you can take some hot water outside in a bowl and quickly spray it upwards into the air - it will fall effectively as a cloud of snow or ice particles.

Is it possible, to run the air conditioning condenser to remove the moisture from the cars interior climate (from your breathing out and possible wet snow on your shoe soles and perhaps clothing) whilst parked up? The temperature differential of the tyre tracks may be because the snow acts as an insulator and therefore its open surface is nearer to ambient temperature. When the snow is compacted it does not insulate so well and therefore allows the heat from the earth to escape more easily, therefore is warmer from that process. Remember that subsoil or sub tundra soil is usually around 18 deg C temperature all year round wherever in the world you are, eg Norway or the African desert the same.
