As a trauma surgeon, I believe the arrow which plugs the wound would actually improve the victims chances for survival. After a large vessel would be hit and inner bleeding occured, the cavity filled with blood will fill up, regardless of an open or closed wound. However, when the cavity pressure increases steadily, at some point it will get higher than the victims actual blood pressure - therefore eliminating further internal bleeding, similar to a compressing dressing or tourniquet. Therefore - keep the blood gushing Jörg! PS: I'd love the flesh sampling arrow for my own daily practice... muscle biopsies would be so much more fun!

For the aluminum bolt, if you really want to turn it into a blood fountain make holes on the side, similar to a cheese/vegetable grinder so they open to the inside on the first 10 or so CM after the cutting tip. This will guarantee that the sides of the bolt don’t close up the wound and there is room for the blood to flow into the body of the bolt. I made the same, cuz I missed the comment :P It's easy to sell anything. Just label it as art- and marked it in the makers name. Impossible to ban even SAM rigs with a fully functional pivot. I heard of one that was sold as art. (Hitched at the automated guide system ofc, and the missiles had to be emptied out completely. Still looks real AF and scary as hell!)

Even if it is, the Geneva Convention is only relevant to war. "War-crime bolts" mean squat to civilians/police just like hollow point bullets are banned in war but legal for civilians/police (In fact, where I come from it's illegal to use anything but hollow points which are "war-crime bullets")

@@CosminCRT the reason why police is using hollow points is quite simple. standard ammo has a much to high chance to go right through the body and hit something/someone behind the target. So they use hollow-points to make sure the bullet will be stuck in the target and therefore minimizing collateral damage.

Have you considered giving the internal vanes (on the flying apple-corer of death) a camber, so that the bolt rotates as the airflow runs through it? might give you that stability you are looking for.

Kees Wuister depends on the degree of camber. A small camber will provide sufficient torque for a stabilizing spin without producing too much drag. It depends entirely on the angle of attack.

I was thinking about it as well, but I was thinking if it didnt work with the vanes you might be able to achieve spin by adding spiralling grooves into the aluminium tube. The airflow going through the grooves should make it spin much like a rifled barrel does with bullets (I know thats not airflow)

Joerg, you have inspired me to make a crossbow to defend my dog from the pack of coyotes that roam my remote spot in the Catskill mountains. I like the bow because there is little danger of a panic shot striking anyone in the valley below. Once the bow is completed the next quest is to create the magazine that allows multiple shots but first things first. Right now I am in preliminary design stages and have two questions that I don't want to become a chore for you to answer, but you are the right person having the right stuff to answer each and they are: 1: I fiddled with a trigger mechanism for an hour or more and came up with what others use which in words is: a center rotating circular piece which engages the string with a trigger that is essentially a 90 degree counter clockwise rotated L shape that rotates where the lines intersect, but engages the bottom of the rotating circular piece holding the string. This trigger mechanism is of simple design, but I worry about safety and it might accidentally fire. If you have a link to a better trigger please share it with me. 2: I have been thinking of using either a single or pair of bonded fiberglass rods for the bow but would love to hear of better ideas and I bet you have a few. Thanks, & I'd love to be a fly on the wall in your workshop.

the broadhead arrow will kill fast with internal bleeding, but not as fast as if the wood didn't plug the holes. the pipe won't cause much internal bleeding until it is removed, though it will cause more tissue loss, and thus a harder time healing.
