I collect the star Elevate for 8 Red Coins in Hazy Maze Cave using 0.5 A presses. The A press is to perform AB kicks on the rising elevators in order to maintain the hyper speed while going up.
This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I collected this star in 1 A press. You can find that video here: • SM64 - Elevate for 8 R... . Since then, Tyler Kehne discovered that hyper speed walking could be performed in the underground lake in order to accumulate 1500+ speed [ • [ABC] - Hyperspeed Wal... ]. Additionally, Plush collaborated with Sonicpacker to figure out how to bring hyper speed up an elevator without losing too much of it [ • HMC strat, maybe...? ]. Expanding upon this, I figured out that by relocating the scuttlebug in the rolling rocks room, we could bounce on it to cross the gap back to the beginning area, and from there clip into the red coin room on the other side of the red wall [ • HMC Hyper Speed to Red... ]. And from there, it's it's history!
So how does hyper speed walking work? It involves a steep slope that descends into water. Normally, Mario wouldn't be able to stand on a slope this steep, but the shallow water gives the ground special properties that allows him to do so. Furthermore, if Mario tries to run uphill on this ground, he will end up running backwards at an increasingly fast rate. Usually, this walking can't be used to accumulate all that much speed, because (1) the slope runs out, (2) the slope connects to a wall at angle that isn't 90 degrees and so running backwards into it moves Mario either uphill or downhill, or (3) Mario gains too much speed and can no longer properly follow along the shallow water. Of course, all of this was already known. What wasn't known (and what Tyler discovered) was that the red wall stops Mario from moving while allowing his backwards speed to increase.
If you're wondering about the half A press, read this before commenting to ask why. I use a special notation that allows for half A presses. Specifically, if you enter a level already holding the A button, then that A press only counts as half. It's actually pretty important to distinguish between the A button being PRESSED and the A button being HELD. While pressing A allows Mario to execute several kinds of jumps, the holding of A allows Mario to swim in water, do little kicks up slopes, grab the owl, and twirl slowly. So if a star requires the A button to be held, the pressing of the A button could have been done at some point in the past, and just held until that moment. For instance, let's say there are two stars: one that requires the A button to be pressed (1x A presses), and another that only requires the A button to be held (0.5x A presses). Individually, these stars would both require a full A press. But if these stars were collected one after the other, then the A button could be pressed during the former, and held all the way through to the next star to be used in the latter. In this manner, these stars together would only use 1 A press, whereas they would take 2 A presses if done individually. So during a 120 star run, you would round these half A presses down, but on a star-by-star basis you would round them up.

I love how in these runs, you always end up doing some seemingly arbitrary thing completely unrelated to the mission at hand for six minutes and it's only in the last five second that Mario actually does what he set out to do and everything before was specifically and meticulously arranged in such a way that Mario can just launch himself into his goals on a magic carpet of contrived coincidence.

To beat the game, you need an initial A press at BitFS. To 120-star it, you need many other initial A presses. I think the count is down to about 30, not sure, and that's using strategies that are only possible with TAS. Also, some of the strategies might only work on emulator and virtual console, but I'm not certain about that.

GogupTheTaco you could simply release the a button by pause buffering right before a new a press in the run and then hold it again. simply repeat that every single a press and voila. you're not always holding the a button without counting it as a a press for itself

MuddyGaming Hey mainly did this so that the Negative speed would decrement by 1 slowly while on the elevator instead of decrementing by 2-4 insanely quickly.

Im doing things kinda similar in super mario 3d land for the 3ds. Im doing runs without JUMPING (a big difference of an A press) and I set up my own rules for it. Wall jumps count as 0 jumps, long jumps/rolling long jumps count as 0.5 jumps, a regular jump and everything that gets you higher than a regular jump counts as 1 jump. The only succesful level I pulled of is 1-1. But 1-3 is really easy so that one can maybe go in the future, but the boss levels are the most fun to mess around with

Almost at the point where 50% of the remaining A presses are for TTC. Will it reach 50%? Or will the next improvement be in TTC? I'm more interested to find out than I probably should be! One thing is certain: TTC sucks for ABC.

pannenkoek2012 I'd love to, but I'm a noob. I tried TASing once and I sucked, no idea how to RAM watch or that kind of thing, and I don't the time right now to learn all that stuff. Cool glitch though, looks promising.

pannenkoek2012 Anyone managed to replicate it? Is there more footage? It may have been setup somehow, a bit like HOLPs. EDIT: I've watched it a billion times, just to notice the warp happens on landing and it looks like he touches the edge after the kick. LOL, I'm not good a this.

1. The tumble? You mean when I do the little roll after diving? I just press B to do that. 2. Glitching up slopes, I think you're referring to frame walking. Basically, press forward for a frame,, don't press forward for a frame, then repeat.

AFAIK the time length for the bonking animation is always the same unless it's cancelled by something happening to Mario (eg. falling off if a ledge, getting hit etc). The way he bonks seems to be optimised to get the closest to the door while in the animation.

When you leave the room where a scuttlebug is in, it spawns at its designated spawn-point, but you can change the spawn-point of a scuttlebug by getting hit by it (the render radius also updates with the spawn-point).

***** I'm no expert but I think the answer to the second question is no, because all of the "M power" drops when Mario gets on the elevator, and you need that .5 press to maintain speed.

Hyperpony Since a certain amount of A presses were cut using half A presses, and since you need to have A unpressed for certain actions, you'll always need some A presses for the current 120 star techniques.

Hyperpony For 120 stars yeah, it's very hard that 0 A presses is possible, given that all of these x0.5 A presses are actually one press on another level. For 70 stars maybe, there's only one press (in Bowser in the Fire Sea) that we can't quite find out how to cancel.

It's actually pretty important to distinguish between the A button being PRESSED and the A button being HELD. While pressing A allows Mario to execute several kinds of jumps, the holding of A allows Mario to swim in water, do little kicks up slopes, grab the owl, and twirl slowly. So if a star requires the A button to be held, the pressing of the A button could have been done at some point in the past, and just held until that moment. For instance, let's say there are two stars: one that requires the A button to be pressed (1x A presses), and another that only requires the A button to be held (0.5x A presses). Individually, these stars would both require a full A press. But if these stars were collected one after the other, then the A button could be pressed during the former, and held all the way through to the next star to be used in the latter. In this manner, these stars together would only use 1 A press, whereas they would take 2 A presses if done individually. So during a 120 star run, you would round these half A presses down, but on a star-by-star basis you would round them up."

Rakonda No. The term "0.5 A Presses" refers to when you look at the level in isolation. In a full run, it would be no added A presses for that course.

So... I read the description... I believe I get what you're trying to say, but... no. Your reason behind the notation makes sense, but the notation itself is completely and utterly void because it makes no fucking sense no matter what argument anyone makes. If you're holding the A button from a previous level, or just the hub, sure. That's all fine. But that is not a half A press in *_any_* sense.

+Dark Storm It is from just the hub or beforehand. Technically he did not press A during this level. It was already held down. If you have not seen his most recent, ever-so-popular "0.5 A Press" video, he explains it near the beginning in a clearer way. In fact, take a look at the description again. There are 2 stars. He needs to press A once for one of the stars. He can get the second star from what he considers "half" a press, AKA if he's already holding the A button. So if he presses A to collect the first star, but never lets go of A and collects the second star, how many times did he press A? It certainly wasn't 2 times.
