"jak sie masz" phrase is very official and what I call the book language. It is being used mostly by foreignes learning polish. In nowadays Poles hardly ever use this phrase in daily life. Instead you can hear 'co słychać' and that is what I recommend to learn and use.

I am from America, I have been studying polish for over a year and your videos are great. It breaks the typical educational videos and allows me to listen to native speakers. As soon as I started to feel knowledgeable I went to Gdansk and my brain melted with the first person I started a conversation with, I felt like I knew nothing lol.

I think in Poland we like to know the purpose of our conversations, so whenever foreigners want to talk to a Pole, they should say straight ahead that they want to make a conversation in Polish because they want to practice language skills, or because they don't have anyone in Poland to talk to, or that they just want to spend some time in nice atmosphere, getting to know someone. Maybe it sounds too straight forward but I'm sure most Poles will be glad that a foreigner actually wants to speak their language, so they will happily make a conversation. It even helps to start a conversation because then there is the subject of why you want to learn Polish, etc., so it's a good opener.

If it's hard to learn Polish for people like me, who knows Ukrainian, language which is very closely related to Polish culturally and semantically, I just can't imagine level of struggle required from English-speaking people to learn Polish. Well, @@easypolish7300, where shall I begin? Just kidding (actually I'm not). Many things are hard about learning Polish, but the subject of this video, small talk in Poland, is one of them. Polish do not engage easily in smalltalk with people they don't know. How about with foreigners? How about foreigners who have trouble with speaking their language? Polish people don't really know how to deal with someone who speaks Polish badly. Even if they speak English or German themselves, they are not inclined to make smalltalk and they will certainly not correct your Polish, because that is rude! Polish people in general (in my experience), even young people, are very formal and polite and shy. Imagine the culture clash when they meet a very direct, loud talking, acting too familiar, speaking Polish very badly, Dutch man! Hahaha!

Good video! My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

I'm actually trilingual, and while I already have three languages on native level, I'm always amazed at any other language I don't know. I remember when I didn't know english, back in my childhood, and this is how it sounded to me back in the day. i think we have something like small talk in Poland, but it's mostly about politics, we like to complain with each other, even strange to us, or about something what just happened, for example a car hit a babcia, or a helicopter is flying, stuff like that. My old neighbours even say that they own dogs only to talk to other people with dogs xD. Yeah, we talk with people we have something in common, like dog for example, or just "dzień dobry", we usually talk to neighbours, but not to strangers if we don't have anything in kind to say.

It's possible, but older generation has more problems with english. It's better to try in bigger cities and with people youger than 40-50. But yeah, it's possible. And don't be discouraged if people seem cold or disinterested at first

Yeah that's what I noticed living abroad, Polish people are not outgoing or spontaneous at all. They will be very helpful and if you need anything you will find them extremely handy, but... I would like to understand why people do not small talk, e.g. in the lift? What are the deeper reasons? The people you asked in the street seem to be aware of the phenomenon, I even have the feeling some of them would like to have a small talk but do not start themselves. So maybe you ask in your next odcinek 110 :-) "Why do people in Poland not use small talk, e.g. in the lift"? Is it because of mistrust, as you do not know the other person? Or because people do not want to bother the other person? Or because of a certain shyness? I have observed this "non talking" many times, even when there was not foreigner around. The answers to my questions are still a mystery to me.

Frank Metzel I don’t like to bother other people with my presence. Sometimes you feel that somebody wants to talk , they try to catch an eye contact with you ect. . I noticed several times people beginning sentences with "Znaczy, ..." (0:36, 4:04, 4:55) which isn't something I've seen much before. Is it just me, or do they always pronounce the word with the beginning ("zna-") kind of clipped off, so it sounds just like "czy"? Also is this expression common across Poland or just Katowice?

Hi apscis_! 🙂 This expression is characteristic for the spoken language and it's very often more like a filler word that is not necessary for the sentence. It might sound like people say just the "-czy" ending when they speak very fast, but the word itself comes from the phrase "To znaczy..."("It means..."), which in English would be more like "I mean...", so people often use it either when they just start a sentence and they are still organizing their answer or when they want to clarify with more details something that they've just said before. If you'd like to use it, you should try to pronounce the whole word "znaczy", rather than just the ending. Is it popular in other regions from Poland? 🤔 I can only speak for Katowice and here I hear people saying it very often. Although, I hope maybe someone else from a different part of Poland will see this comment and share if people also talk like this in other regions 😉

It's a filler word, only used colloquially. Do not use it in writing, or formal speeches. It literally means: "I mean, ..." - like Justyna mentioned above. In everyday speech, Poles will eat some sounds, when they speak fast, but we still hear the distinction between znaczy and czy. Don't try to use "Czy", we immediately hear the difference, even if the "znaczy" is reduced/rushed at the beginning.

“Znaczy” is like a habit, filler word in translation to English it’s “I mean...”. And it does exist in the entire country of Poland. Don’t mess it up with “czy” though because “czy” is used to ask questions. Sometimes in informal speaking people can shorten the word in order to say their thoughts quicker, but that’s only in common speaking never in writing, but I personally think that polish is actually about strictly saying all the letters in the word, not like in French - where you don’t say the endings .

"Czy" also is used in a form of "or" like "this or that" in polish means "to czy tamto"
