Thanks for the nice guide. Quick question, as I'm doing this job on my smart - is it normal that only one of the sides contacting the brakepad of the slave cylinder is moveable? I'm unsure if one piston is seized and I need to swap the brake cylinder.

They should both move freely. I’d chuck some wheel cylinders at it, they’re pretty affordable. Bit of a pain because you then have to bleed them but at least the bleeder screws will be nice and new and not seized.

Out of curiosity is it the rear facing piston that’s seized? Seems like it’s always the rear facing half. I wonder if they just move less in normal operation compared to the front. I think it’s the front shoe has a longer friction material because the rotation pulls the front shoe away from the piston. Maybe it moves more for the same reason. Interesting.
