Honeywell smart valve with intermittent pilot and 24 volt hot surface ignitor was one of the most troublesome systems when I was in the trade. Close second to the White Rodgers mercury flame sensor, intermittent pilot with lock out.

Great Video. Very Helpful, but still stumped. I have power coming from the board on the blue wire through the pressure switch (verified it is closed) to the end of the 4 pin harness but still no power to ignitor. I also tested all the other safety switches and all are closed. No power coming back on orange wire since ignitor not getting power. Any suggestions?

@ANIMALHOUSEBEATZ2 жыл бұрын
Very informative video. I have a better understanding now. I'm having problems with the furnace right now. I have Honeywell smart valve and it seems it's not clicking to release the gas. Also notice the igniter is not glowing. I'm going to buy a multimeter to diagnose this.

excellent video; im waiting for the poe or can bus thermostats to show up as it easier for engineers to design and cheaper to build, thus making the techs job harder.

The smart valve came out as a consolidation of the safety flame controls. Back in the day, 80%and higher furnaces needed ignition and flame proofing. The smart valve was just a Honeywell decision to integrate the safeties. Makes a cheap board into an expensive gas controller. Forcing expensive replacement parts WHEN a component fails. Modern systems use a single control board, and separate modular devices... far better for the consumer.

I recently had a problem with my furnace. Pilot would light but main burners would either not ignite or they would ignite and immediately turn off. Checked flame detector, okay. Called technician and he condemned smart valve. I said thanks but no thanks. I investigated further and the problem was a high resistance multi contact thermostat. Smart valve was getting sufficient voltage to light pilot but not enough 24 V voltage to light the main burners. Changed thermostat and problem disappeared. Lesson is just because thermostat turns on exhaust blower, doesn’t mean thermostat is good. It may be high resistance. Jumper out thermostat to prove furnace works properly. Don’t assume thermostat is okay if blower comes on.
@richardsotnick64144 жыл бұрын
What I mean by a multi contact thermostat is a Honeywell Chronotherm with heat on/off switch, backplate wipers and main (mercury) contacts. There was just too much resistance in all these contacts.
@jkbrown54964 жыл бұрын
You can track the voltage drops in the readings he takes in the video. Starts with near 28v on R-C, then around 27.3 when the inducer motor starts and the relay coil is flowing current. Then the hot surface igniter kicks in, we see 16v quickly going to 23v, then 25.9v from the valve to the control board. I believe 22v is the lower limit for reliable operation of the gas solenoids. If the extra resistance drove the voltage lower when both the hot surface igniter and gas solenoid are powered for initial ignition of the flame, it could cause the solenoid to slip cutting off the gas, killing the flame even if it reopened. Even in the video we see the voltage on the hot surface igniter is 16v for a split second as it heats up, but that could be meter response and maybe the hot surface igniter is powered a split second before the gas solenoid to avoid those inrush voltage drop problems.

Or resistance on the hot surface ignigtor changes when it glows red

The high efficiency units that use PVC for combustion gas create "water" from the exchanger rem,oving so much heat the moisture in the air" condenses" . The old school 80% efficient units that use meatl flue pipes vent discharge air hot enough to burn off the moisture. Until the metal flue pipe gets hot they will condense for a few minutes too.

1 question... After flame is proven through rectification, and the main gas valve opens, does the pilot flame stay on or does it turn off while your burners are going? Thank you
@tomoliver84983 жыл бұрын
Pilot stays on when main gas valve opens because pilot assembly is where the flame proving sensor is located.

Well explained gas furnace operation and individual components functions. I have a question, my furnace intermittently cutting in and out with clicking sound before it fires up. Is this appear to gas valve issue and can it be repaired instead of replacing them. The gas valve is quite pricey. Thanks for your help.
@chamberlain926817 сағат бұрын
If anyone is here with the same problem I had. Honeywell Sv9541 gas valve does control the ignition sequence. If you are having inducer motor not turn on or flame its the gas valve and it may have a solid green light showing. I replaced control board first and it didnt fix issue.

Can you confirm if the control board is responsible for initiating the inducer motor? My issue is when I call for heat my inducer motor won't even start. I've verified the motor is good, and that I have 28v between r and w. I'm about to replace the control board. But I'd like to know that it's not the smart valve not allowing the inducer to start also.
@chamberlain926817 сағат бұрын
Hey . If its a honeywell smart valve it will control the power sent to inducer motor. I tried a new board and it didn't fix problem. The gas valve has a solid light on and wont turn my fan on. Apparently its the gas valve and they are notoriously bad.

so my issue i have is the igniter glows but the valve isnt letting gas pass to the pilot tube i heard it clicking open but no gas passing through?.. everything electrical looks good everything works but no gas is passing through.. any idea what would cause this or is the valve definitely bad like im thinking.

Hey man I have a Gray Top smart valve I am trouble shooting. Inducer comes on, then quits I get 3 flashes. Which is a draft issue. I jumped the pressure switch circuit then the burners fired up. Going to use my manometer tonight and see what the draft motor is pulling. I need to rule out any flue obstruction too. Anything else I should check?
@clucknorriz66833 жыл бұрын
You could actually disconnect power to the pressure switch and hook up your meter ends on it and on the tubing that's connected to the pressure switch suck on it and see if you get a beep on OHM setting if you do that might tell you the switch is OK but then you'll have to use the monometer to check the pressure switch itself, otherwise check for obstructions in the B vent but I believe your problems linked to the pressure switch Does the fan motor run continuously when you turn on power to the unit
