In Defence of Brother Bear

Brother Bear. A classic film. A true classic. But it doesn't get the love that it deserves. It made money, audiences like it. But critics seem to hate it. And so his got me rather tilted, and decided that I have to defend my childhood nostalgia. Once again. The critics are wrong. Here's why.

I don't care what critics say about Brother Bear; I love it with a passion. Sure it has flaws and it ain't no perfect masterpiece of animation. But I will say it is a very good movie that is fun and enjoyable to watch.

This movie is so amazing, the themes: toxic masculinity, the importance of loving everyone, how humans can be the bad guys to other animals, taking responsibility for your actions etc.... It is all amazing and the visuals are stunning I don't really get why it was so badly received unless the critics were all "alpha males bros" or something like that

Actually one of the biggest criticisms was that they became animals instead of keeping them as humans and disneys track record of turning bron people into animals instead of being brave enough to have a full movie with darker faces. Now and then considering they're to make a fable or fantasy based or inspired on certain cultures, a lot of time indigenous american stories did involve a lot of animal transformation, not all but a heck of a lot of 'em. I didn't hear angry people in regards to it's positive message, but a complete dissmisal and just dissapointment of the story like people wanted more and wanted more humans. Like people felt like this movie was like a bad lion king in a way, and I do remember people being annoyed at the moose, which I just don't get.

My uncle passed away up in the mountains and every time my family would go up there we would see a bear. It came to be our little "hello" from him. Having that, and this movie growing up together was something really special. For myself, and for my mom because that was her "brother bear"

I dont understand how this Film is not loved around the globe. It has everything, the Story, the Charakters, the feelings, the beautiful scenery, the music! The Transformation Song is sung in the Inuit language, such a great detail! This Film is so beautiful, in all regards! If there was only one Film i could recomend to every person on earth, regardless of gender, age or culture, its this one. ❤

Brother Bear is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I can watch this movie a million times and never get bored. Its animation is stunning, the songs are unforgettable, and the tale is amazing and heartfelt. This film is just as magical as other Disney films with higher ratings. The excellent soundtrack. The symphonic music is wonderful, and Phil Colins' songs are every bit as catchy, joyful, and memorable as those he wrote for Tarzan. The picture also contains a touching tale that focuses on Kenai and Koda's relationship, as well as a beautiful moral. There is also a lot of symbolism that has been extremely skillfully employed in the plot. Phil Colin’s went absolutely hard with these soundtracks. This movie is an emotional roller coaster of intellect, wit, pure heart, and morals. It takes you on an incredible soul-searching trip. It's a visual feast, epic, and breathtaking. The vividness of the colors and brush strokes transports you on a beautiful captivating voyage that will leave you speechless with its magnificence. So, yeah, the movie is fantastic! This film needs more recognition. People can say anything they want about this film, but I know it was outstanding!

And its really good, has a soul and damn the story about grief, being part of life and , restorative justice by having him take care about the kid of the mom whom he killed. And become a , reconciling. Its really masterful and emotional. And i dont care the younger bit is annoying, like yeah kid. Its one of the best disney movies for sure. Brother Bear is one of my favorite movies!! The amount of thought that went into this movie always amazes me! At the beginning of the movie, when Kenai is a human, the screen is cut and the colors look faded, but when he turns into a bear the screen get expanding and the colors looks more alive.

Coraline had the exact same filming technique. In Coraline's real world, the colours are grey and dull to show how the real world is no fun. However, in the other world, the colours are more vibrant and eye-popping to show the Other Mother made her world everything Coraline's real world wasn't.

The movie meant a lot to me when it came out - its story surprised me, and very few Disney movies since have done that. More than that, at the time I was glad to see a movie where male compassion resolves the story instead of male aggression, where being a man could mean something other than being the fighter. As much as everyone rightly praises Frozen and Moana for their strong female heroes, I think Brother Bear deserves just as much praise for redefining masculinity.

As a girl with two older brothers, this movie was amazing as a kid. I really felt like I could relate to this movie a lot and i saw myself in Kenai. I also appreciated the way it taught my brothers that love was okay to express to others and was healthy for everyone.

I thought this was/is a wonderful film! I thought the message was good, I thought the characters were good, the artwork wa GORGEOUS, and they were respectful of the indigenous people. I enjoyed the songs, the pace was good, it was glorious 2D animation, my favorite form of animation, and...I can't think of a single thing wrong with it. The journey of the brothers and the love they clearly had for each other was palpable. And the plot twist about Koda's mother and how he reacted when he learned what Kenai had done, the devastation in his little face was heartbreaking. Sitka's death still gets me, even today. Denahi's emotional turmoil was believable and painful. It was just wonderful and deserved more. I also liked a little thing they did with the visual scope of the film where it started in a narrow aspect ratio, but when Kenai became a bear, the ratio changed to widescreen. It was symbolic of the character's eyes being opened to seeing more and seeing things through another's eyes. There was so much to like about this that it is no small claim to say that it was unreservedly underrated. ❤

Honestly the brotherly relationship especially Denahi is what makes this movie for me... Koda can be bit annoying sometimes but he is realistic child and fitting pairing for someone like Kenai.

Definitely underrated. I don't think it is a great movie, but it is a good movie with great parts. It's really emotionally heavy too, like the building tension around the bear cub's mom is great and heartwrenching. Imagine having to tell your best friend that you killed their mom, damn.

Sitka's death and the bear's death are two scenes that stuck with me for my entire childhood and even now; always loved that movie and its general vibe, I don't get the general dislike :(

This was, together with Lion King my favorite disney movie when I was a child. The soundtrack is amazing and it has this grand epicness and just so much heart and soul. I heard people complaining about the tone shift from this quite dark and serious start to mostly bear shenanigans and I can see the critique there. But... Man I just love this movie. It's so much better then the newer disney movies. Strange world was just forgettable. Wish pure soulless disappointment. Encanto was the last good disney movie and even between that one and Moana I fail to remember any other disney movie that stood out.

But I feel like those people are missing the point of the story, the journey itself. I love the visuals, the story, the music and I’m glad to see it still holds a special place in people’s hearts. I think similarly to Spirit, critics didn’t receive Brother Bear well because they don’t like being reminded of the violence all of North America was built on. People don’t like being reminded that people thrived and lived happily before the colonists showed up. I absolutely loved these movies, and if I hadn’t moved to Oklahoma when I was younger they might’ve been my only look into some of my native heritage. Which now that I’m older is so, so important to me. I’m not sure how different it is in Australia, (though I know there are indigenous Australians as well) but I have been so grateful for even the tiniest bit of preservation of native culture here in the US.

I loved this movie so much as a young kid that when my mom was pregnant with my younger brother I’d watch it like every day. My mom had horrible nausea during her pregnancy. Afterwards I was not allowed to watch it when she was there since she would get sick. That’s how often I watched it.

Goood, the background paintings in this movie are some of the best and most vibrant I've ever seen. The colours in general are so beautiful! Aaron Blaise, who directed this film, was on Corridor Crew a little while and talked about it. The colours nad aspect ratio change once Kenai is transformed, because it's a literal change in perspective. The amount of love and passion he brought into this project is unrivaled and I couldn't care less about what "critics" say.

I was born in the late 2000s but most of the kids movies I watched were from the 90s/early 2000s; I remember seeing the Brother Bear trailer as an advert before one of my dvds, I thought it looked like a good movie but I never watched it until recently, and OH MY GODS IT WAS A MASTERPIECE! All the lessons it had on masculinity, love and family taught me quite a bit. I personally think Brother Bear and The Princess and the Frog should have been included in the Disney Renaissance, they would have been great movies to end it! Sitka was a great "Disney Dude", right up there with David from Lilo and Stitch!

I've always loved this film!😍😍 I actually saw the second one before, because our children's channel kinda didn't have the right to show the actual Disney classics, and when I finally got to see Brother Bear 1, the film that started it all, I was so hyped, and the scene on the mountain at the end, when Kenai gets transformed into a human again??? Urgh, so beautiful, stunning, and the muuussiiiiiic!!! But my favourite part is how they handled Kenai telling Koda about his mother's death. I wanna cry just thinking about it.

Antagonist Danahi was so fun to watch. He was pretty scary every time he showed up on screen while tracking down his bear brother. Also yeah Sidka was an absolute badass. He swung his spear around with such ferocity and speed just like Darth Maul and his double bladed lightsaber. Brother Bear is awesome, I don’t care what anyone says. I loved it as a kid and I still love it now. Even though it wasn’t as good as the original I even enjoyed the sequel.

During my childhood, my father took my brother and I on roadtrips for summer vacations. We had a small dvd player and we would always take the exact same movies every year : Transformers (1,2,3), Shark Tale, and of course, Brother Bear. It's nice hearing a review about this movie that's all positive. Most of the criticisms I hear are pretty nitpicky. The story is beautiful and told well and you can tell they put in the effort, but not just the type of effort meant to show off all the bells and whistles they've figured out how to do, but not lazy. This is by far one of my favorite Disney movies. The story hits home every time for me. It never got the attention that many other movies of its time did, but I adore it. I feel like others have covered what I would want to say, so... Shout out to the bonus features on its DVD release. They taught me about what the heck voice acting and foley was. And the bone puzzle game was actually fun too! And the moose director's commentary on the film was quite funny.

OH MY GOSH THE BONUS FEATURES ANIMAL QUIZ. I've never seen anyone else mention it before... I was really young and too dumb to realize I had to pick different options to get different results, so I got increasingly angry at it when it gave me salmon and I wanted something cooler but it still kept giving me salmon no matter how many times I played it, lol. In all seriousness though, great review for an underrated film!

I really like this movie. I think it does a good job of what it's trying to do, even great, which honestly is the standard I have that matters the most. Does it try to do what a movie is supposed to do in terms of characters humor, drama, relationships of various types, main points, plot, and development? I remember liking Brother Bear a lot when I was a kid though I admit I don't feel like rewatching it much. I liked that it explored relationships between brothers since those weren't explored in Disney movies much. (Sort of like how people enjoyed the way Frozen and Lilo & Stitch explored relationships between sisters.)

I like Brother Bear this is a underrated animated film, I do enjoy Phil Collin’s music for these movies (I know infamously Nostalgia Critic hates them to the bone) also there was a deleted scene with Kenai talking to Koda without a song just straight up. Also watch this movie again but with the Moose commentary; it is hilariously funny.

I actually like the songs that Phil Collins wrote for this movie better than the songs he wrote for Disney's Tarzan even though that soundtrack seems to be relatively more popular.
