In the daytime, I'm Marinette, just a normal girl with a normal life. Yeah. Sure mate. Sure. Today, I take aim at the grand lie of Miraculous Ladybug.The lie that Marinette Dupain Cheng is in any way, a normal girl. She ain't. She is a rich kid, don't get it twisted. Don't be fooled. And not only that, but she is in majorly privileged social circles. Relatable? Nah. Let's peel back the layers and see what we find. Enjoy.

All of the kids in that school interact with celebrities on a regular basis, so it makes sense for her classmates to believe her when she pretends she saved Jagged Stone's kitten or had dinner with Prince Ali or whatever.

Haven't seen the show proper, and maybe it's unfair of me to judge this aspect by a handful of scenes taken out of context, but I keep looking at the way Paris is represented and being "???". Like, I guess _some_ scenes would ring true in _some_ parts of the city, and the fact that it's a positive depiction that foreign kids may want to latch onto is actually pretty sweet, don't get me wrong. But as a local I've found myself thinking "what's happening, what is this parody of a French city/person?" more than once. I know, superhero kid's show and all, it's not like cultural nuance was supposed to be at the forefront or even a requirement, but sometime it feels like it's being written by an enthusiastic tourist who's really jazzed about the lovely trip to Paris they've had and wanted to tell the rest of the world about it (and more power to them!) rather than a team involving actual French people. :D (and yep, you're definitely on-point with this! The architecture and pple having generational wealth are pretty strong hints)

Didn't know about them renting out the Eiffel Tower for a school dance, but that's out there with being an actual superhero in the "scenarios that wouldn't happen in real life" category as far as I'm concerned. :D (Being curious, I just checked - apparently you can rent out the Eiffel Tower if you want to put it in a movie... for a small fee of 8,000-10,000 eur. a day. As for event hosting, there seems to be a single hall available for rent (about 185 eur/half-day/person - 200 eur/day/person, if the info I was able to find is correct). So it's not entirely a dreamland scenario but would absolutely serve as more proof that these kids are filthy rich). And yeah! The lack of people going around is pretty noticeable... I'm guessing crowds are way harder to animate and more people would mean more characters to design in general, but it was pretty weird for me to see as someone who's mildy agoraphobic and has thought "Wow, this narrow street has NOT been designed for so many people to pass through it at the same time" on numerous occasions while out and about in there. ^^;

The opening lyric sure doesn't work anymore, yeah Marinete is "just a normal girl with a normal life", with parents who work in a famous bakery that is probably the most famous in the city, grandparents that are talented and a uncle who participated in a cooking competition and has his own restaurant. And let's not forget that she goes to a amazing school where everyone likes her and she was elected class president, meets famous people and even make friends with them, designed an album cover for a famous musician, won a design competition and had her work praised by a woman who is a fashion icon and even wanted to take her to New York and work on her career. Yeah, what a normal life for a normal girl 😅

No, you're absolutely right and I've been thinking about this for AGES. Marinette's family is definitely loaded compared to the average person; and the amount of connections she's "miraculously' accumulated is the nail in the coffin. Her family is doing more than fine, they cater to all of those events and probably make a lot of bank considering those events are also filled with hella rich people. Almost all of Marinette's friends are also loaded or made connections of their own. I mean, this is exceptionally dark, but Roses family has to be doing pretty well considering they're paying for her medical bills, and I'm sure that adds up. Not to mention the fact that Rose still keeps in contact with Prince Ali, who is also probably mega rich. Max is going to be elon musk, and Alix's dad is a museum curator which is HUGE-- not that it matters much for her because time doesn't apply, and she can do whatever she wants. The only people who are more up in the air are Nathaniel, Ivan, Mylene, Nino and Kim. Nathaniel is starting a webcomic, which will probably blow up if ladybug endorses it. Ivan we know nothing about, nor do we know about kim. But kim will probably be an Olympic gold medalist in the future. Nino is a DJ and by the sound of it has done several events-- and if they were hurting for cash his family wouldn't let him be a DJ. I will stand by this till the day I die, but they all go to a goddamn private school because the amassed wealth of everyone attending would make the thought of it being a public school a joke. They doubled down HARD on the whole Chole calling marinette "poor" the last two seasons probably to detract from the fact that Marinette is very much privileged as all hell. Not to mention the whole "upper society" part of paris being like "ew poor baker girl." Despite the fact they probably wouldn't even need to bake if they didn't want to. They could just live off of all the savings.

Timmy lived in the suburbs, in a one story house, mom a real estate agent, dad working for a pencil company if I remember correctly? His grades were let’s say not as good as Marinette’s, who was mentioned having “A” grades though she is a part time hero. One friend lived in a trailer park. The “nerdy” friend was smart but didn’t go around building hi-tech robots. Crocker the underpaid teacher lived with his mom. Meanwhile Marinette season 1 has a “field trip” at a prestigious hotel where her bully “punishes” her by having her spend the day with a rockstar. It’s laughably untrue how “average” Marinette is! Edit: Changed “C student” to “grades not as good as Marinette’s.”

As far as I know, Paris is indeed expensive (at least the area where Marinette lives in). But the show's version of Paris looks more like a small town to me. Everyone knows everyone, the streets are clean and not too crowded, there aren't that many cars on the roads, it's rather quiet, most people are kind and polite,... That's quite an idealized version of Paris, so maybe it's cheaper too! XD As for the school, old buildings might sometimes be used for "common" things nowadays but they've kept their good old beauty. XD But I admit it can look abnormally stylish to some foreigners. Now does that contradicts the video? I don't think so. Marinette still seems quite gifted!

Personally I’m surprised not everybody in Paris is homeless. It’s so hard to find and rent an apartment there. And that’s about renting, these kids apparently have their own homes. A good example of an average Parisian (until he ended up rich) is Alfredo Linguini. He applied for a job as a cleaner, yet barely got the job. He desperately cried saying he needs that job. I like to think that Marinette saying she's just a normal girl with a normal life is more about perspective than an actual fact. What is perceived as 'normal' to one individual, could be completely different to another individual. Considering the people Marinette is surrounded with, maybe to her, that _is_ normal, even if it isn't so normal to us. She only considers people with a wealthy status if they are filthy rich like Chloe and Adrien, while for her, she's more of a middle class and financially stable. And that since her super hero life isn't something she grew up with and see it as 'normal', to her, that is abnormal and different. That's just my two cents on the whole 'just a normal girl with a normal life' statement.

Even if we disregard Marinette’s family, it is very expensive to live in Paris for anyone. The school is also quite deceptive, much like the bakery. At first appearance, yes they don’t have uniforms, the interior isn’t anything fancy, BUT this apparent public school looks about the size of an average college campus. They’re in middle school and have their own fancy lockers and take what I assume to be expensive field trips on the regular. They have the tools to shoot music videos, an Olympic sized swimming pool, etc etc. Like everyone there has to be at least basic well off to go there because that’s a very fancy school, even if it’s not super posh.

Speaking as someone who has contact with actual French people, it's actually not that unrealistic for that to be a public school - there are just specific public schools in the richest parts of Paris that pretty much _all_ of France's highest level of politicians, public servants, and entrepreneurs have gone to for generations, that as a result are also generously supported by alumni donations and have close relationships with many institutions, companies and individuals with high standing in society. So, none of this is unrealistic. I don't know much about Astruc's upbringing, but I have a very strong suspicion that he went to a school like this, and just... never figured out that it _wasn't_ normal. Which, knowing several people like that, is unfortunately common and kind of a problem.

One of my sister is a patissière, and she's never been out of job since she started working except for the few times she *chose* to, her skills are always in high demand and she worked in luxury hotels and in famed bakeries. She's at a point where she is financially comfortable enough to have her own flat, travel often and not worry for bills, and she's not even the owner of her own bakery or anything. Whereas another of my sisters is an engineer with a masters degree and is struggling a lot more when it comes to getting a job etc. And about the "public school" discourse, when it comes to PARISIAN public schools, for some of them, it is actually even more of a status symbol to attend them than to pay for a private school, because to be able to register in those schools you need to live nearby, something that is only possible if you can afford to have a home in a designated area (needless to say that you have to be really loaded to do so lol), so even if they are technically 'free public schools', they are nonetheless 'rich kids schools" anyways

In general, I feel like the west tends to present upper class as middle class, and middle class as lower class* I haven't really seen proper working class/marginalised representation in kids shows apart from Hey Arnold, Ed Edd and Eddy, and Clarence. I would have to say the worst thing about how people define the middle class in the west is how so many upper class people genuinely perceive themselves as middle class, simply because they’re not top 1% As a result, they completely erase the grievances and hardships of the actual working class and are completely divorced from what it’s actually like to grow up in a modest household where parents don’t earn 100-200k salaries. These people can become insulting tone deaf caricatures of the middle class, presenting themselves as if they’re apart of the oppressed working class when they ARE the rich. Compound this with the unrelenting nepotism of the big animation colleges that have degrees only the extremely wealthy could afford, like Calarts, that has its graduates disproportionately end up immediate showrunners (something that otherwise can take over a decade for animators to achieve) it makes sense why animation is almost exclusively reflecting the warped rich-kid perception of what lower and middle class lives actually are, like how in Miraculous Ladybug Chloe is the depiction of the rich kid (which is more than upper class, she’s the top 1%) and the rather wealthy upper class character like Marionette is being presented as the “average middle class” Everyman. The way the animation industry favours graduates from colleges only the wealthy can attend, it makes a lot of sense as to why those who have the lived experience to ACTUALLY depict middle and lower socioeconomic classes realistically aren’t ever getting the chance to be showrunners, or at least get it FAR less often.

Marinete’s home does look kinda modest in the main area, but that tower set up she has with all that sewing and designing material makes me think they’re definitely well off. And what exactly is the bakery and apartment layout? There’s obviously a lot of floors, with the bakery at the ground and Marinete's tower at the top, but how many exactly? There’s the kitchen and living room area, which is connected to a hallway where sometimes we see other doors, but are those other tenants? Utility rooms? Storage? Heck, where do her parents sleep? And how quickly can they get to the bakery in case something happens? Also, my family knows people that are pretty rich compared to the area, but most don’t really flaunt it. One guy is over 100, made solid investments and stock market options, and his family down to the great-grand kids are pretty set. Humble guy though who is the sweetest old man ever and still lives in his 2/3 bed one floor home. A few people are farmers and ranchers, so they have figured out the markets and can make a decent penny. Also tend to just live in nice and simple houses or move out to the country cause they either own the land or bought it cheap. So yeah, you can sometimes never tell someone’s financial status at a quick glance, but putting the pieces together does help ya form the big picture.

OH!!! I just realized Chloe acts as if she is from new money by flaunting her wealth. That's very unlike Kagami, who definitely has multigenerational wealth behind her, and behaves as if she is from old money. Adrien also seems to act like he is from old money too, though I'm not sure about multigenerational wealth on that front. Though Gab also acts like old money, but some instances in the show makes me think otherwise and maybe he married into it and learned how to be from Emilie. May I am going crazy with my speculating here. Anyway, I've heard that people of old money also aren't very accepting people of new money, too. Her dad is the mayor (in most places mayors hold up like, 4 years of mandate, but let's say he had 2 mandates or whatever, he surely hasn't been the mayor all his life and being a mayor pays a lot but not enough to have generational wealth unless their whole family used to all be mayors of Paris idk, but that's not how elections work) and her mom is a fashion designer (and while yes, you can be a fashion designer nepo baby, you can also work in the industry so it's somewhat hard to figure out if she has generational wealth). To be fair, I've recently watched the Shanghai movie and it is explicitly stated that her parents have been saving up money for whenever Mari would wish to get in touch with her roots. Half of Marinette's class have parents or relatives in VERY prestigious or powerful positions in PARIS. Seriously not only does she personally know and have a past with the MAJOR'S DAUGHTER (who is also the daughter of A REALLY famous fashion designer) her other classmates include people who are the children of a head chef of what i remember being mentioned one of the most premier hotels in Paris. And the sheer fact that these kids get contact with some of the most famous people is telling. I can tell you the most famous people i met at that age where local tv personalities and a Miss America. I didn't meet freaking Bill Gates or Merrill Streep. And Hell I grew up in a rich fucking area comparatively. I attended one of the richer schools in THE STATE. I honestly find it harder to believe that its not some type of private school or prep school as it seems why too good off to be a public school. But im also use to incredibly shitty schools in America. After all I honestly find it hard to believe at all that Gabriel would allow Adrien to go to just ANY school. Marinette's House is all I need to look at It's essentially a 4 story house with the bottom floor serving as the bakery but the whole house has ascending stairs that lead to each floor. The 1st floor is supposed to be the parent's room, the 2nd is living room, and the third is Marinette's room. Yes Marinette room is essentially a attic converted into a loft but 1 whole floor for parent's room? 1 whole floor for just the living room and personal kitchen space? And they get a roof top balcony? Now that I look at pictures that room isn't even an attic. It has high enough ceiling that Marinette's bed is a loft. When you look at shots of a whole room Marinette has a studio apartment. Just one wall has enough space for her make up armour and her work desk and her loft bed. And that's not even the whole wall.

I had this same thought watching the show. But as soon as you said cosplaying as the middle class. I thought of Marie Antoinette. This baker girl gives a whole new meaning to "Let Them Eat Cake" lol. You do realise that Paris isn’t actually that small. From the show we’re told that Marinette lives on Place de vosges. Not possible; there are no bakery on the Place des vosges. Plus you can’t have that view of Notre Dame from place des Vosges. Not even from City Hall which is opposite but you have the buildings on the island to hide it. That said, owning a bakery and the entire building in that particular neighborhood would take a buckload of money. 15k€ per square meter in that district on average. Also no secondary school that close; not in the perspectives we see because there are a number of both public and private middle and high schools in the neighborhood; most of them prestigious if not expensive. There are however on average 30 kids per class so 😉. Also Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower are least 30min away by subway from where they live. Their cinema seems to be around Odeon which is a good 20min by foot; the Canal St Martin is about the same and the football stadium is actually on the other side of the city 😂😂😂. Of course Marinette isn’t your average Parisian girl. Sorry Parisian here with kids who are absolutely in love with the series. Oh and the Mayor has no power over schools; they are under the aegis of a government body

someone said it's like a romanticized small town version of Paris where everything is close, everyone knows each other (hence why everyone knows celebrities, even if she was a "normal girl with a normal life", in a small town where most of the population is rich and famous/knows someone who's rich and famous, there's a chance you'd know them too), there's little cars, pollution, streets are clean, there's no crowds, every tourist attraction is close to her house but also her school is too and all her friends' houses are in walking distance... I totally agree on the building though. Not just the location, but purely the size of the building and the fact that it's a 3 story building means it probably costs so much, and when you add the good location.... + the fact that Marinette has a rooftop terrace with a view of the Eiffel Tower...

honestly, i know this is a show about paris so in reality if she was poor she would not be living where she is. She is super close to all major buidlings, landmarks and very famous relics so her house (even if it was passed down through the generations) would be worth millions. Finally great to see other people thinking the same things

Yeah, they are all super rich (reason why Chloe and Gabriel looking down Marinette is weird and dumb), but it is a pretty dumb and entertaining show, so I can't be mad when something dumb happens (most of the times at least xD)

As someone who went to public school that is NOT a public school lol yes all these kids are in the wealthy category. The school fees alone would mean they'd need to be, I'm glad someone said it cause I couldn't be stuffed making a video but noticed it pretty quickly and it's so funny hearing a rich a kid go "I'm just your average girl" no huni no your not. You do have struggles but you're no where near average.

Even rich child could go to public school. In Paris, that’s not an issue because of the « carte scolaire »: if you live in a certain area, you have to go to a certain school. So, when the place is expensive, only rich peoples (And a little bit or poor with « logements sociaux ») go to the school for this area. It’s public but with different standards. And « conservateur de musée » is between 1700 and 4000€ per month. But it’s quite a prestigious position, difficult to have with a competition (40 chosen between 1000).

I'm glad that you made this because it's TRUE! I realized a while ago that literally no one in this show is actually poor or even middle class, BECAUSE they live in the heart of a major city PARIS. If you're walking distance from all the big attractions and live comfortably downtown, you're not poor. Of course there are Parisians IRL who are struggling and not rich, but that's the part tourists don't see...and likewise, this show presents a very sanitized version of the real city.

Tbh, I think that Miraculous really represents that habit of writers to make characters wealthy or to give them every opportunity in the world to make their stories more interesting. In this case, Astruc and the other Miraculous Writers made nearly every character that Marinette knows either famous or someone related to a famous person. It’s a very popular form of lazy writing. Instead of giving the character traits and plots that make them interesting, the writer instead takes the easy way out.

The more you break things down, the more I'm convinced that Astruc had some unresolved childhood issues that overtly fuel the characters in this show. Chloe has got to be based on a rich kid who turned Astruc down for a date and from then on was 'wrong' and 'evil' in his eyes. Adrien and Marinette are some OTP stand-ins in this weird little fanfiction, and some of these writing choices are literally just a bipolar's nightmare. Kuro Neko for instance. Literally has two overtly stated reasons for the plot. Neither one of them is resolved. I think the early seasons of Code Lyoko honestly had better writing, and that's a super serious sci-fi cold war show where the opening pilot is literally TeddyGodzilla. Like Miraculous rehashed that plot and somehow I prefer the Lyoko version.
