Since we are converting the STI to Ethanol I thought it would be fitting to cover what E85 is and why were are swapping over to it. Plus since I have all the parts needed to make the swap I thought it would be a great opportunity to show everyone just what you need to be able to convert your car to run the fuel properly!

Tanner, hope your feeling better my G. You did forget one downside to running E85. The duration between oil changes are shorter due to the E85 cleaning the cylinders more effectively. It's been said to check your oil and AOS more often due to the E85 detergents. Some may need to start changing the oil around 2500 or sometimes sooner depending on driving style.
@WillyLax24
@WillyLax24 4 жыл бұрын
DASH-GARAGE I was told the same thing, that I need to change my oil every 2,000 miles, but I was told it was due to the fact that some fuel always gets by the pistons and into the oil and that the E85 brakes down the oil’s viscosity more quickly than regular gas. Not sure which reason is correct or if it is a little of both, but the frequent oil changes are definitely a con, but worth for the additional 125 HP I get on the E. If I am frequently changing the oil, Is it bad to run E85 all the time?

As always your videos are on point, informative and very helpful! Another successful example of your creative development :) Quick little information point I wanted to drop for everyone, when you get tuned for the E85 setup your sensor will automatically adjust to whatever you fill it with. You should not have to change your tune as your sensor will adjust the ECU content. All of our fuels have a 10 to 15% ethonal content especially in our premium fuels, that's why most people run a blend of half or quarters to get your desired octane.

were you ever able to get this done? I'm just now looking into getting the flex fuel kit and it looks like tuners can't tune for e85 anymore, Cobb discontinued making their flex fuel kits. Looks like the only way you can get it done is finding a home garage tuner as most reputable shops won't do it anymore apparently. kinda bummed, could've done this when I first bought the car three years ago. guess I'll just have to miss out

I'm still learning on E85 and performance boosts. However I do know a fair amount about Ethanol. You can ask any brewer or distillery. The Ethanol molecule can be bonded to water molecule but it's not hygroscopic or highly absorbent of moisture from air. I live in a fairly humid part of US. I've left glasses of Ethanol (ex. Whisky or Everclear) around the house and none of them had a puddle of water in them, the ethanol evaporated, the glass was empty. Test this yourself. If the distilling process is done correctly then an Ethanol-Fuel producer is making sure the Ethanol does not have a lot of H2O molecules bonded. 195 proof or 96% is the most pure that distillers can make ethanol. Even running gasoline engines, a small amount moisture can be inside the engine and it can handle that, anyone ever seen water dripping from a tailpipe? If the distiller does a good job there should be a minute amount of water bonded to the ethanol, which will turn into water vapor during combustion and be sent out the exhaust. There's not enough federal regulations on ethanol-fuel producers to guarantee quality YET. Also Ethanol is not corrosive to stainless steel or rubber hoses. The most common modern stills are made of stainless and use rubber hoses, a quick google search will demo this. Ethanol is something we drink aka liquor, if it was corrosive to steel or rubber we shouldn't be able to drink it. Gas tanks can have condensation in them with gasoline or E85, ask any experienced mechanic, heat from the car + humidity. The fuel pump in your video I believe has stainless steel and plastic, my fuel pump does, stainless steel doesn't rust even with water. Some of your other information is correct, ethanol is thicker than gasoline and a stronger pump might be needed. Also the fuel injectors (made of steel and durable plastic) are also impacted by this thicker fuel, so some modification is necessary there. Other items you mentioned might need to be improved or changed out to increase performance. Thank you for the information and thank you for listening to my 2 cents. Please verify my conclusions by checking knowledgeable individuals.

I agree with 80% of this but you should’ve titled it E85 on EJ25 and then made an E85 on FA20. FA20 you don’t need injectors or fuel pressure regulator. You need the Cobb Flex kit and the AEM340lph (or any other drop in E85 compatible pump) and that’s it. Very useful info though!

you do not need a ethanol sensor to run e85. yes its good for a on the fly adjustment depending on the level of e85 content you receive but alot of people still run dual map setups. injectors and fuel pump yes. a mix between e65-e85 on a scale is not a big difference on a tune. on my evo x a few years ago i was dual mapped and never had a issue. i was tuned on around e78, just monitor the afrs and you'll be good.

So, if i understand correctly, the reason E85 makes more power is because you can squeeze it more put more of it along with more air and make a bigger boom. So, if Gasoline could be given the same knock resistance, it would make the same power with less fuel used because you would be able to squeeze it more right? So, why can't they increase the octane value of gasoline?
@Smeedia

They can, you can get 110 Octane gas its just not very avaliable. Some airports carry it though

e85 isn't very common here in my part of NY. There's 1 station about 15 minutes away and there's 1 near my 2nd job which is 45-50 mins away but currently doesn't work. And three more in 2 nearby cities but too far unless I happen to be there but its rare

I've been looking at setting my VR5 Bora up for E85 since it costs less and has better emissions and is nicer on the engine rather than for the power but I'm not sure would the decrease in fuel efficiency be made up for in fuel price? Also this vid cleared up HEAPS of my misconceptions about it being just a tune and the fuel being what makes more power instead of allowing more power so if OP reads this thanks

You always do the right stuffed videos with perfect timing of upload right when we need them(at least for me :D)! just a couple of things in my mind -- 1. i am running a AEM 340 fuel pump and a cobb FPR as well for my Stage2+ 2016 STi and planning on getting the E85 kit from cobb, so I assume that the AEM FP is E85 compatible, correct? 2. If added EWG, may I know the pros and cons? (do it really need it? IDK 😐as I am running a catted DP at the same time IDK if it really matters) 3. Someone suggested me to go with a moderate turbo like cobb 20g, is it worth it or instead put that money to get a FMIC?(not looking to max out but more for reliability coz i do alot of road trips) 4. After getting the FF kit installed and tuned, do you recommend any of such mods related to reliability and road trip efficiencies? 5. Lastly, is it necessary that we need to run ONLY E85 or we can run E85 through 93 Octane? -- though this is a question for tuner, but just asking
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 4 жыл бұрын
That fuel pump will work perfect, that's actually the one that Cobb sells! EWG not needed if your catted 😁 If it were me I would get the FMIC over the turbo to decrease your IATs. As for other mods nothing that comes to mind that you'll NEED to do And you can run and bleed of Ethonal once the sensor is installed 😁

You need to make even shorter oil changes due to the same corrosion matter? If I dont use it daily basis, corrosion will affect other parts? I have to spend the E85 in a timeframe? Doing 370whp and wanting to jump on E85, but I have my doubts as I want to keep reliability as priority.

BTUs are not a meaningful scale for measuring energy transferred from the fuel into power. BTUs just measure how much heat is produced when the fuel is burned. and the laws of Thermo efficiency state that any energy that is transformed into heat is lost in the process of combustion therefore hindering the actual power delivered to make the engine run. This would suggest that the Ethanol, which burns colder should last longer than the gasoline that uses much more of it’s energy producing heat rather than running the engine. If it is true that ethanol burns faster than gasoline then the reason must lie in the higher octane rating meaning that while gasoline wastes energy through creating heat it may also make more use of the oxygen in the air when mixed with the gasoline going into the engine in turn burning less gas than air stretching the gas longer than the higher octane ethanol which may require require less air mixture during combustion, burning less fuel.

Great video as usual! Assume the DIY hose is much cheaper than buying new fuel lines? When you pull those together can you do a video on that? How about the need to run switch back to another octane, 93 or 91 etc, assume the flex fuel sensor can adjust on the fly? is it ok to mix in tanks or is there a rule of thumb, e.g. run to the light comes on before changing fuel in the tank? Big thx brotha, keep it up and stay safe!!
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 4 жыл бұрын
Will definitely add the video in! And yes you can swallow back to lump gas at any time or mix E85 with pump and it will just change your final Ethanol % but still safe to drive 😁

I actually just got an e85 pump about 2 minutes from my house(literally the closest Station). I never really thought too much about going e85 until then! Question-you can still use regular pump gas right? You have to get additional parts to do so or is it just like a different tune you can switch over to? I’m assuming you’ll cover that in your next video so I’m probably jumping the gun...
@Smeedia
