Thank you so much for this video! I’ve done it 2 days in a row now and I already noticed an improvement in my voice while singing a particularly challenging song I wrote! These exercises WORK! I also do some lip trills and a couple things I learned from a teacher named Debbie Beinhorn years ago, but those things on their own without this warmup did not help me sing my difficult song. This will be my go-to from now on🙏

how do I know I’m not humming? I can feel the air coming out of the straw but I feel the sound may still be stuck a bit in the hum space, or in my mouth if that makes sense? Trying to gage how much air I should be releasing at each part of my voice it seems to move as the resonance moves.
@1etamusicx4 жыл бұрын
I think as long as it's not coming out of your nose then you're good.
@SingingStraw4 жыл бұрын
Try plugging your nose and if the flow/sound doesn't change - you're good!

When you're smoothing your break, what's the role of how much force you're putting behind your vocals?
@TamaraLeaMusic3 жыл бұрын
when heading to the top of your range, do you feel like you are using less air to create the higher notes?
@SingingStraw3 жыл бұрын
It is tricky, because for high notes your vocal folds have to stretch more, and the balance of air is important - too much can blow the vocal folds apart. However you need more air pressure as your notes get higher, so instead of thinking less air, think stronger, more focused airflow. Hope that helps!

Another excellent lesson. Thank you Whitney. Just wondering about the arpeggio exercise ... if you have time to answer ... is it normal to feel your diaphragm bouncing up and down or should it be still, should you only feel your vocal folds moving around as the pitch changes key? Not sure if it's the diaphragm or the muscles below the diaphragm I seem to feel. It's at the front, at the bottom of my ribcage, in the middle of my abdomen, about 4 inch above my belly button :- 0 The muscle there seems to jump around on the arpeggio. Some tutors say your abs should be like firm jelly, so is it normal for them to move around to support the different notes being sung? :-)
@SingingStraw3 жыл бұрын
You definitely want to focus on smooth & steady in your mid-section. Your diaphragm contracts down when you inhale and up when you exhale/sing. And that movement is largely out of your control, so just focus on smooth & steady!

What video would you recommend for helping me breath mainly out of my mouth? I tried closing my nose when I hum but I realize that it was a challenge as I breathe through my nose so often. It addition when I try to do higher notes it seems to be another issue where my air tries to move to my nose and out of it.
@SingingStraw3 жыл бұрын
You mean to keep the airflow coming out of your mouth as you sing? I'm working on a nasality video (coming soon) which will be helpful, but in the meantime - use this getting started video and play around with pinching your nose and puffing your cheeks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bna1aZqjYs96oaM Good luck!

Straw phonation doesn't affect hydration - I'd suggest drinking a lot of water and making sure you're hydrated!
