Many speak highly of The Witcher 3 and for good reason. Its takeover of the gaming industry back in 2015 propelled CD Projekt Red to new heights as the gold standard for AAA RPGs. That said, they weren't a mere one hit wonder. The Witcher 2 is often forgotten as fantastic fantasy RPG thanks to its year of release where it went up against Skyrim. As a game I have a ton of nostalgia for, I decided to do a deep dive into The Witcher 2 and see how well it has aged after 11 years.

@@scotts1912 TW2 is made with "replayability" in mind. When you replay the game, try changing the end of chapter 1. If you followed Iorveth, go with Roche this time and vice-versa. It's the only way to actually understand the entire story of the game. When I started chapter 2 on my second playthrough I couldn't believe how much the story was different this time.

The Flotsam lynching is one of my favorite moments in video games. It really illuminates the irony of witchers being created to protect humanity from monsters, when in actuality the humans are the real monsters. Also the romance scene with Triss is iconic. I'm amazed at the impact on the rest of the game from choosing between Roche or Iorveth (I'm still bummed that Iorveth was cut from Witcher 3).

I absolutely love The Witcher 2. I played it years after 3, but I have to say, it gives TW3 a run as far as how freaking good it is. Combat is much more challenging in 2; you pretty much HAVE to be using potions and decoctions to make it through some of the tougher encounters. I was stuck in a damn Drowner cave for over an hour in the early game just getting mobbed by low level enemies and dying over and over until I really embraced the boosts. I like the claustrophobic feel of the woods areas and even like the more linear nature of it. All around a fantastic game that still holds up really well.

Agreed. I absolutely love Witcher 3, the various settings are so alive and beautiful, but there's always a sense that you're 'just passing through'. In Flotsam or the military camp in Witcher 2, it feels more like you're visiting a place and taking time to be a part of the area.

I had a similiar experience with this being the first PC game I got when I got my first PC, I tried to get into it a few times, but as somebody who doesn't like playing on KBM and I had no controller, and the game was confusing for me when I was younger, I couldn't get into it. Fast forward to Witcher 3, I wanted to make sure I had completed W2 before it came out, get all my xbox achievements, and have my save file carry over (the good old days of when save files carry over to sequels right?) I dived back in, fell in love, couldn't believe the world I had missed out on, and now more mature understood the gameplay elements and design more clearly with it's intent. Did my two play throughs, got all my xbox achievements for the full completion, and finished the day before Witcher 3 came out. I'll have to replay this one day as well, great to see it again, a classic RPG for me, even if a bit clunky or semi outdated with several mechanics.

The Witcher 3 was my favorite, but it wouldn't be around without the Witcher 2, which was as great in its own time, especially because of the story and execution. The crown you spoke of, always belonged to Bioware and then it just passed to CD Projekt. Bethesda never held it 🙂

A better game than The Witcher 3 by most accounts. Combat in this game was so much deeper and better realized than its sequel. 😔

After the release the guy responsible for combat design and animations continued working on the game. He released an unofficial patch fixing many design issues related to eq, combat and signs. Honestly, the game should only be played with this patch. I completed both versions of Witcher 2 and have no doubt about it. It completely overhauls the combat and the gear you get and when, which makes it a vastly different experience. Search for it online. Edit: almost forgot, it overhauls the skill tree as well!

I completed it 6th time after few years break. This time finally on highest "Dark" difficulty. It was really enjoyable experience. Of course gameplay is more clunky than Witcher 3, some design choices are bad, but as whole game is fun, challenging and has great story (probably the best of all trilogy). If you accept some of its flaws, you can have really good fun. I really enjoy that it doesnt always hold you by the hand but actually forces to figure something out on your own.

The Witcher 2 is one of the most highly rated underrated games of all time. It's just as good as TW 3. Just different games. He mentioned DA:Origins. It's just as good as that also and deserves just as much attention and respect

The Witcher 2 is such a good game, whenever someone asks if they should play the first two Witcher games or just skip to 3 I always say to start with 2 as it holds up MUCH better than the first and is pretty much a giant prologue for the Witcher 3, and you'll also get a ton of info about the Witcher world you wouldn't get otherwise if you just skipped to 3, the fact that it has two completely different paths to go down mid game is great too

I gotta try to get into these games. I’m a stickler about starting trilogies/series from the beginning, so it’d be nice to be able to play the Witcher 1 easily and/or remastered before diving into 2 and 3

I actually love the Witcher 1 on PC. The combat was really rhythmic and when you got in the groove of changing styles mid combos it can be really fun and satisfying.

@@dylanhedderman2001 it should perform great on the steam deck but it's something you need a keyboard and mouse for. The first Witcher is a PC exclusive and I don't think it has any controller support at all

play it on the One X or better and you basically get a remaster. I played the 1st half on X One and the 2nd half on Series X and the difference is crazy. Like it does crazy stuff like render objects at range based off of the close up version so you can see fine details at a distance.
