When they go into the movie, they start turning into the movie. They come out of the water with perfect hair and immaculate outfits whenever needed. The dance number at the end is to show that they brought some of the musical movie world back with them, the rift between worlds didn’t close, which is also why the movie characters come out of the water in the post credit scene. Also it’s a Disney channel movie. Let’s not think too hard about it

I think another reason why this movie was such a big event is because it was the ONLY DCom released in 2013. That may be why the production quality is so high on Teen Beach Movie. Disney must have put all of their resources into this movie.
@sketchycat62232 ай бұрын
Considering this is one of the only DCOMS that doesn’t take place in modern day, there was probably so much extra with to be done for the sets & consuming to look era accurate. That & having the actors actually learn surfing definitely added up. Honestly I think Disney should’ve continued to do only 1 DCOM a year for a while after this, make it more of an event!!

Also, this was Ross Lynch at his peak in Disney Channel. Disney was using his name to promote their stuff and it totally works. Teen Beach Movie came right out in the same time when Ross was still doing Austin and Ally. So they clearly knew what they're doing with Ross, Ross was a huge A lister in Disney Channel like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Jonas Brothers. Makes it better that Teen Beach Movie debuted right after an episode of Austin and Ally, so Disney was really using Ross for their advantage. Basically what Disney saying was "If you love Ross in Austin and Ally, you're gonna love him in Teen Beach"

Teen Beach will never live up to what High School Musical did, but I think it's a really close second, when viewing the first movie on its own merits. It was well written for a DCOM, the cast seemed to really enjoy what they were doing, and the music numbers are some of my favorite in Disney Channel history. Overall, I think it really earned that cult following.

Okay so the last number, musicals have this quality where not all musical numbers are actually happening, they're just a representation of what's going on in the character's minds, and I understand the confusion given that the movie mostly plays out in a meta way where they're actually doing the songs and numbers, but that last scene isn't supposed to be read as an actual number, it's more of a representation of Mack's new found freedom

I was eight when this came out and I can confirm, you couldn't escape this movie. Seriously, I remember going to some kind of event the day after it premiered and some of the girls there were constantly singing the "Girls Like/Guys Like" song verbatim, which is insane because those are complex lyrics to memorize and sing, especially the day after the movie premiered. I guarantee if you ask any girl that's like sixteen to twenty-four, they'll know the lyrics to every song, it was that big of a deal. I specify girls because it didn't seem to impact guys that much and Disney definitely seemed to lean towards a young female demographic at the time. I watched it and I'm a guy, but I could tell it wasn't as tailored to an eight year old boy's mind the way something like Kickin' It or Pair of Kings were. But yeah, it was my first encounter with Pop Culture and it's dominance over individuality, as I've always been the "Weird Kid" that doesn't jump on all the trends. I remember thinking that it felt like a Zombie Apocalypse or a Secret Society, my generation was obsessed with this film and it was pretty good.

I was around the same age when this movie came out and my experience was similar. I remember everyone knowing the lyrics and even the choreography. The music isn't always good to me. The singing/dance numbers can be jarring and take away from the actual story telling. I've never seen this movie specifically. But there are musicals where you can't go 5 minutes without a song breaking out. I like Disney animated movies which definitely have music sections. But those feel different maybe bc they're not as often. And maybe bc their animation so there's more to look at then to watch someone do a dance I don't care about and sing a song I don't particularly like. Sometimes the songs go on for actual minutes so it overstays it's welcome. Musicals are also usually cheesy and corny. You don't really get, breaking bad or game of thrones ( ik these are shows not movies, just an example ) level writing in a musical. Id guess because everything takes a backseat to the music. I don't hate musicals. But I don't prefer them and am hard pressed to watch them. Bc 99% of the time when it's done I wish I could have that time back to watch something else instead. Lucky if theres 2 songs I enjoyed.. the story itself was meh at best, and when there's a moment the movie can have that really interests me they break out in song and dance. I do not like musicals.

I just realized while watching this video that they made quietly subtle hits that the surfboard and Lelia/Macks necklace were connected somehow bc they have the same logo on it. I think that maybe Macks grandfather maybe somehow got the surfboard from the movie and had it as a family heirloom and when Mack needed it, it magically showed up in front of her door so she can ride it and it would take her to the movie universe. Maia Mitchell was also starring in the ABC families teen drama “the Fosters “at the time she was in this movie! You are right, Maia Mitchell does not get enough props for her performance in this movie but if you haven’t already, check out the Fosters!

Having the main lead both take up surfing lessons has got to be one of the most authentic parts of the movie. I said and I couldn’t agree with you more that it brings a new level of authenticity to the movie

The most unbelievable thing about this movie is that Mack’s surfer-dude go-with-the-flow grandpa named one of his daughters Antoinette. Does he look or behave like someone who would name their daughter that?

A shame that bro doesn't like musicals, but I'm glad he liked this one! I genuinely think that Teen Beach Movie was Disney's last big musical movie and yes I know Descendants exists but... Idk, this film just felt grander to me. As for the sequel, it DEFINETELY does have its faults, but there are some things I did like and I can't wait to see what you talk about next week (hopefully)! Great video as always man, one of the best KZbinrs out there :D

Fun fact: the costume designer for Teen Beach Movie is Springfield Mass native Ruth Carter, who also designed the costumes for both Black Panther and Coming to America movies (and the Eddie Murphy Dr. Dolittle movies). She didn't do the costumes for Teen Beach 2 tho

SeaCat would have been a pre-steam casting choice for Broseph in a Live Action version of the 2009-2011 hit tV show Stoked. But that show is a vibe. I think you should review it. It’s like a week to watch.

it's crazy cause I love this movie and have seen it a billion times and yet i never once connected the sleepover "you can do what you want with your life" thing to mack's main conflict. cause you're right it's not similar enough to actually connect to most viewers.

I'm a sophomore, and Teen Beach Movie was my childhood. I still remember most of the lyrics to the songs, I've watched it an incredible amount of times, and on multiple occasions, I've convinced my friends to turn it on at their houses (and convinced teachers to do the same when we watch movies)

I’m around your age, so I also remember seeing ads for Teen Beach Movie but haven’t watched it myself. I remember being confused by the parody/meta concept - probably because I happened to get into the original 1960s Frankie and Annette beach movies right before this was announced and was expecting Disney to just… do that, straightforward. Maybe I should have given it a chance, but it also came out when I was in high school and used Disney Channel more as comfortable background noise than something I’d actually admit to watching

I also love your Zeke and Luther references (best Disney XD show ever) I always look forward to them haha You should definitely check out Ross Lynch's new music from his band he has with his brother called The Driver Era, his voice has 100% improved and plus their music is such a vibe!

Here’s how I interpreted the finale, Surfs Up, as actually happening as a musical number in the real world. I interpreted as one of two options Option 1: When Mac and Brady were in the Wet Side Story musical world, some of the musical energy they absorbed while they were morphing into the movie was still in/around them for a temporary period of time and that’s what caused Surfs Up to happen at the end without anyone questioning it, because they were affected by the lingering aura they still had and after some time it went away as they morphed back into the real world, hence why they were never able to create a musical number again Option 2: Surfs Up was an actual song in the real world and it had a popular music video with an iconic dance that everyone knew. Kinda like Tik Tok songs and dances are today. So it was probably a fun celebration and someone played the song on a boom box or a Bluetooth speaker and everyone started dancing to it because it was a popular song and dance they knew. I’ve seen that happen in real life when I’m at an event and the song cotton eyed Joe plays; everyone starts doing the iconic dance that goes with that song. So it’s not that far of a stretch to say that the same thing is happening with Surfs Up

Loved the Video man! Teen Beach was one of the very very last things i saw from Disney Channel before i stopped watching and i remember loving it for the concept alone. As a lover of musicals myself i really came to love the work and care they put into this. Obs 1: Would love to see a Teen Titans vid Obs 2: I hear you about Giggles LOL Thought i did crush on Leila at the time as well Obs 3: Glad to see Mack Getting some love, but actually like Ross Lynche's performance in this. Guy had charisma. His voice is deeper now LOL Obs 4: I' ve watched some actual 60's beach movies after this and there are some real Cartoonish villains and charcters like this( made me love the movie even more)
