We’ve had one project quietly looming in the background of our minds for a while now. We’ve put it off because we know we’ll be dealing with ruined material, and it puts us in an uncomfortable place in the build. The project is our floor insulation.
However, with our massive ceiling project completed, it’s time to start crossing items of the list that will get us to the finish line, and one of those projects in floor insulation. We’re actually pleasantly surprised as we zoom through this project with the help of Kyle.
Then, it’s onto the start of waterproofing our shower, and the continuation of closing up all of our walls.
Follow along as we race to getting the sign off from the county for certificate of occupancy!
***************************************************************************
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on KZbin. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

Have you thought about putting a simple wireless thermometer in the crawl space that feeds a display unit above to monitor the temperature through the first moved-in winter so you will have an idea of actual temps recorded in that space. Will give you peace of mind that wrapping pipes and all is sufficient or that you might need to add a bit more. I monitor my woodshop building this way just to make sure my small direct vent heater is working as it should November to April. Everything is really starting to come together. Congratulations!

That's a really good idea. I have one that I use for my greenhouse. Do you have a specific brand that you use?

Lacrosse has a wide selection, but more like true weather stations. We have one of these in our kitchen. ThermPro has a wider selection of basic units. There’s is the one I use for my shop. Amazon has a bunch of both.

Suggestion: When ripping long boards on the table saw, clamp a straightedge to the table on the side opposite the fence to help keep the board from wiggling. 😊❤

Thank you. It almost feels like it's going a little too fast these days. It's like cooking a big meal. Everything is plodding along at an easy pace and then all of a sudden in the last few minutes as the meal comes together it gets a little chaotic. Lol.

You two just amaze me. You've overcome so many obstacles and fears to reach the point of almost turning the house into a home. I can see you having Thanksgiving in the house. Surprising how much you can get done with having an extra set of hands. A high five 🖐️ to Kyle for his help. Kyle and Ryan's shirts almost matched. Was wondering if this was a new dress code for working on the house until i saw yhat Sarah's shirt was totally different 😊 As always wishing you the best.

Dress code isn't a bad idea. Wonder if we can get all 3 of us to agree on something. Double high five for Kyle! I don't think we could have made this happen before Thanksgiving without Kyle's help. He's a rockstar!

I (Sara) was joking with the guys all day about how they were matching. I asked why no one texted me the night before so I showed up in the correct color flannel. Once I cracked that joke, I just couldn't stop. Lol Then last week the guys matched again. This time, I kept it in and didn't tease them. I laughed really hard when I say your comment, though.

That is a good reminder that we do have an exposed P-trap that needs to be insulated below the house.

How are you keeping the insulation up in place?
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 10 ай бұрын
We are using a combination of strapping and the metal support rods. When we initially put it in we just friction fit it until we come back later to do the strapping.
@Mouse2677

Unless you support that underfloor insulation with a net or other, it will drop off the floor onto the ground!!

We are going back with strapping and support rods to secure it in place.

I have to say I think you will regret insulating the floor above your crawlspace especially in a northern climate area. Hot air rises so the transfer of heat loss to the crawlspace is minimal at best. I’ve seen it numerous times being a plumber of frozen pipes because of insulating like this. A better choice would be to block off all crawlspace vents with 2” thick foam board as much as it takes to fill it flush with the concrete, insulate the ban joists, then drape fiberglass bats down the crawlspace walls to the ground. This will make the crawlspace part of the heated envelope. Which will better protect the live water lines in the crawlspace aswell as the ptraps that hold water.

They could put some thermometers down there that measure min/max temp and see if they are risking a problem.
@roydriskill8342
@roydriskill8342 10 ай бұрын
@@private15 the problem I see with that is when the thermometer shows it’s below freezing in the crawlspace the problem has already happened. There may only be a day or two of extreme cold temperatures but when there is isn’t really the time to try to repair burst or frozen lines. I’m just stating my experience with crawlspaces I’ve seen where the floors were insulated like this blocking any heat transfer to the crawlspace. The crawlspace vents & uninsulated crawlspace walls will only add to the problem in my experience. I live in Kansas so it’s not like I live in the coldest winter climates but have seen pipes freeze several dozen times when insulated this way.
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 10 ай бұрын
The insulation we're adding is required to gain our certificate of occupancy with the county. We've actually considered foam board insulation on the foundation wall, but it might not happen anytime soon. We did put foam board insulation on the rim joists before we put in the fiberglass insulation.
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 10 ай бұрын
Oh, and we also live in a place where below freezing temperatures are pretty rare. If we're super worried, we'll leave the faucets running (like we have in the trailer, lol) and if we know we're headed out of town during a freeze (or potential freeze) we'll most likely drain the system.
