Great video. Thanks for sharing. To me alcohol is in the same boat as any other form of escapism we use to keep from having to live with ourselves. People who are truly and deeply happy with their lives don’t need to drink like those who are stuck in loneliness, anger, depression, fear, confusion in order to forget about their suffering. Self love can never be served to us from any other place than through deep appreciation, compassion and insight into who we really are. I used to turn to many things in order to escape and endure my own suffering but have found that living deeply, openly and fearlessly is such a better rush than anything you can find trapped inside a bottle. But in a strange way the bottle gave me the keys to my own freedom as it showed me how a great waste of life can manifest itself. There is no escape suffering in life. We can only become better at learning to live with it. Remembering that whatever we resist, persists. Truly love yours videos man. Very inspirational and knowing you are completely sober doing them just adds to my love of your craziness. 👍

I love the analogy of a fire in the house. Having a fire in a fireplace can be amazing but if that gets even a little out of control, I can create a huge problem.

This is an absolutely fantastic analogy, I felt the same about my drinking. I got sober at 28 (now 33), and I've had a few people ask me for help and advice about how I got sober but I'd never judge anyone else if they want to continue drinking. Most of my friends drink and drink responsibly. More power to them in my eyes, it just doesn't provide anything for me anymore vs when I was in my 20's and needed it for various reasons. I don't think being sober defines me at all, it's just something I choose to do.

Bro this is awesome but also sad man. I wish I would've known this that night when we were in Crested Butte before skiing the peak /\. I felt like I saw the signs of a "fire", but I didn't do anything about it. I'm here for you man.

Good on you for using your story to help others brother! The fire analogy is perfect for this, it shows maturity in you when you're aware that not everyone's fire is out of control! Stick to it brother.

Wow! Metaphore story telling man! Outstanding framing, and you know I've lived this! Such a thoughtful analogy! And meaningful perspective. A well lived, creative life needs no mending!

Great video man. I’ve been sober 2 years and I detached from the ‘hardcore sober’ community relatively quickly after getting out of rehab. It was the most judgmental hypocritical scene I had ever seen. I simply just wanted to get sober and move on with my life just like you would getting over a breakup with girl. But some of these people made sobriety their entire identity. Many of them were years into being sober and still living in the past. It’s like their everyday was their first day sober. I’m cool with the ones that are low key and just go on about their life, but I can’t stand the preachy judgmental ones.

That's a great analogy. I'm coming up on 2000 days in a few weeks and I've had this moral dilemma of how I approach helping people. It's not my place to point at them and tell them they have a problem. But I should help where I can. My solution is to be completely open about my struggles with alcohol. I feel like its my duty to be a light house shining a beacon and letting others know they have a safe harbor to meet me in the middle. Congratulations on getting to this point. It is so much better on this side.

I've been sober my whole life. No alcohol, no weed, no drugs. But have I actually been sober my whole life? I still dont know what Im doing with my life, Im not hardworking at all, and Ive basically disappointed everyone I know. Maybe I need some alcohol (not that I would) :(

Glad you realize life is a high on its own, no need of altered mind to enjoy, actually can hinder all the physical things. Welcome. Lot more non drinkers around than one realizes. Salute 3

I appreciate your story and that you share this, man! Definitely some helpful perspective for me navigating my own journey, having grown up in "houses that were burning down", and always seeking to better come alongside friends and family to both enjoy the fire but also be there to help contain it if needed!

One of the best analogies I’ve ever heard. I’m eight months sober and continuously working on repairing the damage. Also the best decision I’ve made I’m my life. Congrats man!

I love this analogy. And I never really thought about the burn damage side of things. But it's true. Just because we make a healthier decision or cut toxic people out of our lives or whatever, doesn't mean that we still don't have damage we need to attend to. I'm the same age and have not drank pretty much at all for about the same amount of time, and ultimately I feel similarly to how you feel. I don't want to tell other people with fireplaces they shouldn't have a fire, but when you make a positive change for yourself it is hard to not want to help other people make that change.

Thanks for sharing man! I feel like anyone can relate to this, sober or not. We all have people around us that certainly face this issue and this analogy is super insightful. Definitely not an easy topic but we appreciate your courage to express your opinion. All the best, Shaffer

Kudos to you Shaffer for sharing your story and thoughts on this. Whenever I see a video like this I often think should I cut alcohol out of my life. I don't think it's bad in moderation but often we don't moderate...

Feeling guilty sucks and you acted wrong.. BUT recognizing it and trying to better yourself is the only thing you can do with that regret. The message you sent out is good, respectful and humble and I'm very sure you are helping someone out there. I also abuse alcohols and tabaco for too many years and as you say.. it's your deal. Pointing out won't help unless others want your help. If someone out there is having trouble talk to a friend that has their fire under control or talk to a doctor. I'm sure they will listen :) thanks for your video. One of the best yet
