Answering some questions: masterings bending styles is like mastering different martial arts. It's something not purely spiritual. So, even past avatars can't do that job for Aang.

29:23 yes comets are ice. But they give off so much heat and harness incredible amounts of energy, especially when near the earths atmosphere. Sozin found a way to harness all that energy and heat into his fire bending, that's how he was so powerful. Each element has something tied to it that makes each bender more powerful during those times. It's not just the fire nation.

3:10 I think that’s my favourite part of Katara and Aang’s dynamic. He was born in a time of peace, and her in a time of war. She was forced to grow up too quickly and Aang taught her how to have fun again while she teaches him how to be more “serious”. It’s like in episode 1 when she told Aang she hadn’t gone penguin sledding since she was a kid and his response was “you’re still a kid” :(

The four nations are each modelled after a unique real life civilization. The Air Nomads are Tibetan Monks, the Earth Kingdom is ancient China, the Water Tribes are Inuit (also called "Eskimos"), and the Fire Nation is modelled after feudal Japan. The ancients believed that comets were made of fire, so instead of the modern realization as balls of ice, the traditional believe of balls of fire is used. The immortal spirits of the Spirit World are similar but not the same as the human soul, which in a meditative state can be separated for visiting the Spirit World. Many of the questions you posed during the episode will be explained, but for one of us to do it, would contain spoilers. But I will say, rest assured, all your questions will eventually be answered as the saga continues. One of the things I love about this show is its even balance of action, character development, and lore drops throughout the series. One last thing: unlike other shows with martial arts action, instead of generic martial arts movements, each of the bending disciplines are based on a different type of real world Chinese martial arts: Airbending is Ba Gua (circle walking), Waterbending is based on the movements of Tai Chi, the long strikes of Northern Shao Lin Kung Fu for Firebending, and the low, solid stances of the Hungar (animal forms) for Earthbending.

I just realized, when Zuko chooses between Aang (or Appa, anyway) and Iroh, his scar (damaged side) is shown when looking at Appa, and his good side (both figuratively and literally) is shown when looking at the tracks to Iroh.

Episode 8 is the first one where we see something about the Gaang that makes them very special, as Sokka and Katara's plans combine to get the door open. They're all intelligent in very different ways, so they constantly trade the "team smart guy" role back and forth while always staying true to character (a character holding the "smart guy" stick is almost always in a situation where it makes logical sense for them to be the one to have that insight over the others). It's a great way to showcase how they work as a team, keep things fresh and vary the character dynamics while still making them consistent. It's a rare thing for a story to nail this idea, and I applaud the writers.
@UTU492 ай бұрын
I love the fact that Aang, Katara, and Sokka don't really have a leader. Katara maintains the greatest sense of purpose. Sokka is the most practical with maps and stuff. Aang, however, is clearly the most powerful. They are, therefore, a trio who trades off taking a leadership role as appropriate to the situation.

11:35 Iroh is just very spiritual himself, they reference it towards the end of the season so I won’t spoil it but Iroh after his loss In the Earth Kingdom, he traveled the world, and there’s been scenes prior and after showing that Iroh didn’t return to the Fire Nation for some time, until he found himself and had growing to do on his own. Iroh is such a great character.

29:02 yes hundred plus avatars have mastered the elements before however every after is born in a different nation and has different characteristics from each other and each element has its opposite which would make some elements harder for some while others might find that element easier so all though the spirt has mastered it a hundred plus times each individual avatar has to learn how to master the elements individually which is why when aang is in the avatar state he can bend every element that’s the spirt thats him subconsciously using it as a defense mechanism but he has to learn how to manipulate the elements on his on to be in control when he is in the avatar state

One of my favourite connections between incarnations is that they did that thing from japanese(?) culture where its said that your face now is the face of someone you loved in your past live. Aang looks a lot like Rokus wife. Roku looks a lot like Kyoshis girlfriend. Kyoshi looks like Kuruks girlfriend if he imagined her huge and unkillable.

Firebenders get their power from the Sun. The comet simply reflects the Sun's heat from a much closer distance which is why it amplifies all firebending. Similar events amplify the other elements as well.

Seeing spirits & even visiting the Spirit World is not limited to just the Avatar, but it takes work & practice. Aang would have probably learned how to enter the Spirit World from another Airbender in time, but he ran off before that happened. Iroh may have found a guru at some point who taught him how to enter the Spirit World & that helped aid his ability to see spirits. In the case of He Bei, it's a spirit that chose to let the humans see it.

I always thought, Roku destroyed the temple as a big f you towards the Sages. He said: You don't deserve to have a temple for me, after you betrayed the Avatar. All the other questions you had during the episodes will get answered later on

I LOVE that you caught perhaps the most glaring flaw in this otherwise perfect show...comets are made of ice. So why would it help firebenders? If anything it should help waterbenders. It bothers me every time I watch a reaction to this episode. But then I get over it and just enjoy.
@lichcoin61442 ай бұрын
4:28 There are sages that are supposed to help, at least when their main purpose is not corrupted by an authoritarian head of state (has actually happened more than once and not just for the Fire Sages in the past history of this world lore, but for the sages of another nation) but really, when it came to the past Avatars we know the most about from flashbacks and glimpses in the show and from full length novels where they are the leading Avatar character in the narrative, such as Kyoshi and Roku (and a few others that I won't mention by name for now because you are not familiar with them yet), it is the previous Avatar's Companions (his best friends in their past life) that are supposed to help as much as they can and ideally, become the elemental masters of the new reincarnation of their good friend. Problem is, when it came to Aang, this traditional method ended up failing because he ended up in suspended animation for a century. And it was a century dominated by the biggest world war this planet had ever seen, no less. So, by the time he needed and would have been expected to rely on their help, none of the masters or close friends of Avatar Roku were still alive so Aang could not rely on their first-hand experience helping his past life or sharing what they learned of their predecesor' Avatar powers.

Iroh is a genius. Every move he makes is well thought out and prepared. even his sillyness has his own motivations. Remember for later that iroh can see the dragon. That little detail carries so much importance in the weight of the story. These episodes you also get to see sokka as the genius he is, we just tend to forget because he's so free spirited

a lot of todays-episode questions have season 2 and season 3 answers. I honestly miss story telling where we don't immediately get answers to questions like "why is the world a certain way" in regards to characters like Roku, Iroh, Zuko and even to some degree the Firelord - gives you time to breath and get to know a character through their actions. Reality doesn't front or sideload everything there is to know about a person. It's bad writing imo, to use it as a shortcut that telegraphs the feelings you're supposed to have about a character.

Yes. Comets are made of ice and some rock, and they are not hot. So, it’s not really a comet. But they call it that. Suspend disbelief!
@stuffyouotterlistento14612 ай бұрын
It is a comet... just not as we know it. I mean, we now know that the world is not composed of the classical elements of earth, water, fire and air, but that doesn't stop people from making a cool show about them. And just like people used to believe in the classical elements, they also used to believe that comets were made of fire. So this is basically that take on them. With that said, I associate the word "comet" too strongly with ice for it not to bother me. It's like if snow cones in some show were alchemical concoctions made of fire that they were still calling "snow cones".

In the life action series they let Aang already channel Avatar Kyoshi in the second episode, that was really great done there and i now missed that totally here now.
