When the damage is done, we live with it forever. It is a detail heavily overlooked. But honestly, I don't like that one of them could possibly be my neighbor after they get it off their record. When I have kids one of them could be my neighbor and my say in whether I want to live that close or not has now been taken. The justice system will then have put my children in danger & I think that is one the absolute worst things you can do to a woman. It's a never ending battle with congress for women.

@@kittykatcongregation Sadly, I don't think it's an open and shut case. On one hand, yes, people want to protect their children from perceived harm. On the other, we need to consider that a) records being wiped after completing rehabilitation training is not something that is open for everyone - not for those who were arrested on charges of violent sex crimes or sex crimes involving a minor. Sexual attraction to children is a specific disorder, so someone who bought sex from a prostitute that was of age would not be a threat to children; and b) we know that the leading cause for re-offending is rejection from society - not being able to find housing, work or re-integrate. So, paradoxically, pushing people like that away mostly ends up causing what we hope to avoid by pushing them away. Not saying send all your kids, unsupervised, over to the new neighbor's house, who just moved there two days ago, but that's something you shouldn't do anyway - you knowing stuff from their past that wasn't violent or wasn't related to minors is not relevant.

@Lafaye Reid 1) If you believe Twitter is "the whole legal system," you need a civics class. 2) We literally have a Supreme Court Justice who is probably a rapist, who was not concerned about clearing his name and actively wanted as little investigation as possible, which he was granted. The whole thing was framed by the Senate as a partisan attack, rather than what it was, a woman recounting one of the worst days of her entire life. A well-educated woman, mind you. A Ph.D. in psychology. She is not confused about who attacked her. She is smarter than the average person. She is likely far smarter than you, for example. 3) Those who presided over that trial overwhelmingly said that Dr. Ford was credible. That her emotion in the trial was sincere, that she was driven by civic duty to speak out and tell those in power that this abuse happened. Kavanaugh, on the other hand, was an emotional wreck during the entire trial. He cried about his dad's old calendars, working out with his high school bros and mentioned beer dozens of times. He was reticent, combative, and frankly conducted himself like a child. Watch the footage and see for yourself. 4) Despite this incredible lack of discretion or fact-checking, the Senate did not break any laws by confirming Kavanaugh. This sham of a hearing was morally wrong... but it was not illegal. Those men (they're still overwhelmingly male) BELIEVED Dr. Ford. They just DID NOT CARE. 5) We STILL have the OTHER Supreme Court Justice who was accused of sexual harassment during his confirmation and faced exactly zero consequences for the same. His accuser is still alive, and has forged a brilliant legal career for herself through this ordeal. But in the 25 years between then and now, so little has changed about the realities of assault. The power struggle, the objectification and indignity, and most importantly, the utter lack of consequences for perpetrators. In case you live under a rock, the Justice and his accuser are named Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, respectively. 6) There are not enough women lawyers. There are not enough lawyers of color. The profession of law is still overwhelmingly white, straight, rich, male. Able-bodied... you name a privileged class, and that class is overrepresented among attorneys. Part of this is because law school is expensive, and paying off loans takes longer if you're poor (for *cough* whatever reason), and is actually MORE expensive for disadvantaged populations because that's how interest works. P e to the rt, bitch. Educate yourself.

Hailey, expungement is an equal-opportunity component of our criminal justice system. There is a wide variety of criminal offenses that can be erased from a person's record (provided that they undertake the laborious and sometimes expensive process of getting it done). Of course, that doesn't change the way stigma follows us women around for the rest of our lives. Being blamed and derided by certain members of our society is a hideous cultural construct, one that no amount of law enforcement will uproot or eradicate. Societies are made of people. Societies change when their people do. Mostly this happens when elder generations die off, because people are stubborn and often refuse to change their minds. But sometimes it happens when people of all ages learn and grow, rise up, speak out. The best way to change your society is to remind yourself every day that you are a member of it. Statistically, your existence changes society, by ever so small an amount, but a nonzero amount all the same. Your life is within your control, and your life may yet influence other lives. You are a human being. You matter.

I used to laugh at conspiracy theorists, but I have since grow to become much more suspicious and now question almost everything. I think the fundamentals of our constitution and “System of government” are sound. The system has simply become perverted (not merely in the sexual sense but in the general sense also) and corrupted by greedy and self serving politicians. No it's not. I know people who live on public assistance. They get a townhome for $80 per month. I k ow 3 who have their college courses for free. Their childs daycare is under $100 per month. So they can go to school. Free stuff isn't free! Someone has to pay for it.

I wish this series was longer bc the documenting and content are both so well done. I am so sorry for those victims, I can only imagine their pain. This definitely opened my eyes in many ways. I feel the drug epidemic certainly goes hand in hand and I know many people who have financed their addictions thoroughly via prostitution. I was even approached several times to get involved and turned down every offer. I can’t imagine those who don’t have a choice in this no matter their reason. As someone who has physical disabilities, I know that the accessibility to public services is scarce to none. So to those who think that men and women can just simply turn to the government are so misinformed. If it’s impossible for someone with physical disabilities to be able to access services, think of how little people who sell themselves have an opportunity to gain anything from our government. Our government would like to just turn a blind eye to this entire issue as if it’ll just magically go away and that’s clearly not going to do any help. I believe earlier this year backpage was taken down. When I just searched it, it showed that it had been seized by the government which I believe is a small step in the right direction but doesn’t clog the flood. It’s truly a societal issue that’s at a standstill. I hope for those on all sides that there is some sort of resolution, and for victims that there will be justice for their suffering. Most people who do this are just trying to survive which may be hard for many people to understand but it’s just a fact. I like that Noor lets the interviewee be open and that she doesn’t discredit anyone’s views or stance. Truly unbiased reporting in my opinion. I wish the news was like this. Honest documentarians should follow suit with these videos. I find that with documentaries, there shouldn’t be a dialogue leading its’ viewers to feel a certain way on the information being received. Great reporting and overall just a great way to lead people into the conversation. Many find that the sex industry shouldn’t be spoken on or explored. Once again my heart goes out to the victims and even those who aren’t victims and that chose to be in the sex industry. I know some of what I said was very repetitive and may be overlooked, but I appreciate anyone that has read my comment.

I actually like when journalists show their feminist and human rights activists motive through their work and take a stance against exploitation and on top let their research speak for itself - I really like both. but agree with all else you said and think she does an awesome job. it's also the case they're not only financially vulnerable, but statistics show that 75% - 100% of all girls and women "working" aka being exploited in the sex industry, no matter prostitution, porn, etc. have been suffering from sexual violence and exploitation, abuse already in their childhood while growing up. this says a lot about what was indoctrinated in them of what they're worth... just being exploited for somebody elses sick need for power and perversions. and also this old saying of people who spread justification of it, claiming without evidence prostitution is the oldest "business" (in fact it's mainly a crime anyways) - it's not, it's merely 4000 years old, as old as patriarchy. since that children - mainly girls and women were objectified and exploited heinously. pimps, human traffickers, mainly men feed of off girls and women like leeches, parasites, criminal golddigers. they're the realgolddiggers, yet men only ever accuse women of it to distract from the real golddigger parasites. luckily there are good men as well who advocatefor laws like The Nordic Modelto make paid sex only illegalfor the customers. asin Scandinavia, France, etc. already the case.

I’ve read a lot of comments on here and I think people are forgetting what the series is about. Trafficking. Not prostitution alone. If it’s two adults and they both want to that’s isn’t an issue. It’s when women and children are used to make other people rich, or are forced to do this so they aren’t killed. Just because lawyer does not want to defend a murderer does not mean that he does not consent to it. An ER doctor may not want to save a KKK member but will probably consent to save him. A police officer may not want to take an abused woman that just killed her abusive husband into custody but will probably consent ti do it. Most humans consent to many things that we do not want to do. Just because the sex worker said that she would not want young girls to want to become sex workers does not mean that she does not consent to sex. Many experienced police officers/doctors/teachers/etc. would not want boys and girls to follow their footsteps. Police officers and teachers tend to work unhealthy long hours filled with impotent rage, powerlessness and extreme stress and impossible expectations only to be ridiculed and insulted by society in general. In short, it takes a special person and a special temperament to be a good police officer/ teacher/ sex worker/ doctor/ etc.

I am South African of Indian descent ( Tamil - South Indian.). My family is traditional on both sides and I grew up immersed in the culture. I went to an after school program in primary school ( 10 - 12 years) to learn the language of my grand parents and the ethics. There was also Madressa ( for the Muslim children). All this was community arranged and voluntary during the Apartheid regime in South Africa. I wanted to be a journalist. My form room teacher who was also my history teacher discouraged me as it was dangerous in those times. I was encouraged to study Social Work. I changed after two years to Teaching. I had gotten a job to teach Tamil within the public school program when I was 19. I stayed in this job until I was 27 and even though I was a qualified teacher I was never a full time public school teacher with the benefits. As a family of four daughters and a son ( I'm the eldest) and my dad was diagnosed with cancer when I was 23 it was challenging. I joined an NGO when I was 27, in an attempt to make a real difference in my country. I learned about rural Kwa Zulu Natal and by the second year almost lost my life after an attempted car jack. After a short recovery I was looking to find a job. It took me over a year and I became a medical rep. Now I was working in private sector - healthcare sales. I learned and grew exponentially. At age 32 my father passed on and at age 34 my sister became a single mom and a diagnosed schizophrenic. I bought a house and was the "father" At age 39 I was unemployed after a male manager decided to "fire" me when I didn't comply with his advances in the pharmaceutical industry. I took the first job available which was in South Korea to teach English. After 5 years of that I really wanted to return to South Africa and be a full citizen but I didn't find a suitable position for more than a year so I returned to South Korea, shelving my dreams to work for my first employers in South Korea who had started a language school in an elite area in Seoul. I made some interesting connections in this part of the world and learned about contrasting societies and in particular social stereotyping of all kinds. I'm planning to return to South Africa on April 6th 2019 and a few weeks ago I joined a cafe meetup group where we meet over coffee on Saturday mornings to discuss TEDx talks that inspire us. For this weeks meetup I chose yours after finding this piece and looking for your TEDx talk in hope of finding it ( totally intuitive). I am inspired and in awe of your work. Thank you for being YOU! and living your personal legend ( The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho). I want to know what you are doing now in 2019 so I can follow your journey.

I'm from Washington state, not too far from Seattle. I had an angry X post my picture on 6 different sites. He made my profiles very nasty & made me seem like a prostitute. (I was told by a friend I was on dating site, so we checked a bunch & found me on 6) There's fake Facebook profile with my picture. I had men coming up to me all the time propositioning me for sex. It was awful!!! These type of men are SICK!!! Without the men AKA buyers, the women & pimps are forced to find different ways to make money.

I work in a strip club. By choice, I like my job. I get paid nearly as much as a doctor or lawyer (my friends an orthopedic surgeon and my cousin is a criminal lawyer, her sister (my younger cousin) is a real estate lawyer) I also have a bachelors. And I'm back in school looking to get my masters. I can outsmart 95% of the men I meet. But that doesn't help me make money. Acting like a bimbo does. Call me whatever you want. I like taking taxis and eating at expensive restaurants. I like owning two homes at the age of 26. I like taking care of my elderly family. My mom just had surgery. She had the option to stay at these horrific hospitals for free(which I've personally stayed at and wanted to die) she is elderly. I sent her to a private hospital 300$/night she loved it. I just bought her a house which she thinks its for me to move into. Shes helping me pick out the walls and floors. And I cant wait till I give her the keys and say this is yours. I've hired photographers (3)just for that moment because I need a good few shots to put in the entrance of the house. Call me whatever you want. i'm happy and I support sex workers and I'm probably more educated than 75% of you. Stop judging things you know nothing about. If you're curious. come in, buy a drink. And ask. We don't bite. Most of us are educated, well traveled and pretty intelligent. Don't judge what you're afraid of.

Consenting to take your clothes off while moving your body and being paid fairly for your efforts is FAR different than sharing bodily fluids and being penetrated by someone for even really good money. Stripping is not even on the same planet as when someone is FORCED to share their body, being penetrated by all types of weirdos. While someone else takes those profits. Years after being trafficked, living in another state, one of the buyers somehow found my new number and even sent me a friend request (not noticing I wasn't even in the same state). They left a voicemail and sent text messages on how much they wanted to see me, and other details, clearly wanting to get together. YEARS LATER. Buyers do not care, the majority of mine were very wealthy, the could care less what was going on in my life, still couldn't, they are seen as pillars in their community. Me, finding a job, being taken serious by anyone, having to repeatedly contact law enforcement agencies and finally someone willing to take my case on. Meanwhile, a buyer continues to see me in such a way that they go to such extremes to find me. The system is screwed up. People go missing but families have no idea they person is likely in another city or another state, even country. Others do not but most don't recognize the person is being victimized.

this video is really encouraging as is the seattle initiative. prostitution has been legalised in new zealand, where i live and has increased massively. it's disturbing. unless the men who exploit and abuse these vulnerable people are confronted and held responsible this will never change. and it must change. people are too precious to be used and abused.

Whenever people make statements like saying that prostitution in N.Z has increased massively without any sources I can't help but do a quick google search to see if it's true. What I found this time pretty quickly was that decriminalizing prostitution has not meant more women have turned to prostitution (I don't get why people would think it would, this is not a profession for everyone thats for sure) but what it has meant is that women are safer and a sex worker was even successful in prosecuting a brothel owner '..through the Human Rights Review Tribunal for sexual harassment by her employer. She was awarded NZ$25,000 for emotional harm. “As a new generation of sex workers begins in an environment where things are fairer,” Barnett explained, “they will slowly find that they are not working in an environment where that behaviour is tolerated”. @@dchenkin02 what is wrong with that, is that you assume it is morally acceptable to BUY sex from someone. I hope you realise that you buy only their consent. A body, or the emotional reaction to the sex with a complete stranger you might not even have a chemistry with, cannot be bought. You can't make your body or your feelings react in a certain way. So the probability of women going into prostitution, not being aware of this issue is very high. They will be traumatized by this before they can realise it because they are often as young as 18 or 20. The brain is only fully developed at 25. They will be traumatized by the fact that their brains say "but I wanted this" but their bodies will feel raped and humiliated. There is nothing you can do about that. No money will solve this problem. If you do sex work long enough, eventually this feeling will be the norm for you. You will not be able to have a connection with someone through sex anymore. Intimacy will be alien because of the trauma. Sex work should be illegal and prohibited. And If anything, the minimum age of working in the sex industry should be 25. Another problem is the entitlement of men thinking they need this service because they are lonely and desperate for sex. Where do women go if they are lonely? Where do they go? You think sex will solve this? This very thought is the root problem. Sex is not love. Loneliness only goes away through real human connections.

Loneliness has to do with the sheer disconnection and distancing human feel from each other due to many factors such as social media, hours of work, individualism, depression and _sex for money_ will never eradicate that loneliness. Not to mention that behind the sex trafficking industry there are extremely powerful people who are often the ones to demand these _"services"_ and many of those people are in charge of running countries, involved heavily and deeply in their countries' politics, millionaire and billionaire business owners who have lots and lots of money in their hands, people powerful enough to _make laws and change the ones that already exist_ and legalizing sex work without _criminalizing and stigmatizing all the men who buy sex from women_ is just giving these powerful criminals exactly what they're asking for: the legal, economic and social _acceptance_ of their crimes, it perpetuates the misogynistic stereotype that women are sexual objects with no free will of their own, that women owe men sex at the expense of their own health, comfort, emotional health and that men's sexual needs and pleasure are more important than women's. Liberal feminists talk about women _"being in control of their own bodies"_ but conveniently forget that in the sex industry _women are not the ones who actually make the choices over their own bodies, men are the ones in charge of making those decisions, because men are the customers and the women are the ones providing a "service": they serve men and accommodate their comfort to satisfy men's needs and demands._ That is the least empowering pro-women "profession" in this world. Just finished watching all 3 parts and other reated videos. This issue is so complicated, and it seems that every person involved has a different idea on how to improve the system. However, I do think more people need to know about this. When I told a coworker I was watching this, they asked why I would watch something so depressing. Simply because we need to be informed on the issues that are happening and need our attention. Like one girl said, people saw her on that corner every day and didnt say a word. It is truly sad that this number increase by the day, there is a huge demand out there. That shows our failure as a community. Absolutely a system issue. I've been homeless before and wondered what my options were. I found others, but only because I live in a city with opportunities and had the forethought to give myself backdoors out of these situations so I could pick myself up again without resorting to a job that I can't do. Also, prostitution isn't always non consenting and if it was legal, I wanted to spend the money, and the guy was absolutely willing and was 25+yrs old I would rent a guy for a night sometime. Not everyone is in it for survival or by coersion, those that are absolutely need help. Those that want that line of work should be given the same amount of safety and respect anyone in any legal job has rights to.

It seems like every time the gov comes across something they can end or start to help there’s a reason to do nothing so we get stuck with a broken system the best way to start without question is in schools where young children are is where the knowledge needs to start health classes is where it should really start and not in middle school but around 5th grade because they only real way to make a solid change is to start where it all begins the molding of our society. Also have classes or even send through email this type of information to parents so it can be something it’s being talked about and not just accepted among the society. Parents and children are the heart of our communities.
