Excellent! Simple and easy. No fancy micro-controllers to control the oven temperature, just need attention of the user. Thanks for posting this video.

@mondalaci we do small prototype batches this way, but send our larger runs.

Interesting video, I think the flux from the solder paste isn't enough to get enough wettability for liquid surface tension to pull the larger ic's into place because it's designed for high powered convexion reflow ovens that have uniform temperature. But i don't see how you could add more flux without upsetting the paste. You can see the ic on the right is misaligned by at least 40% of its pitch @7:16. Beside it not being esthetic for a customer to see, there are reliability reasons this is not okay. Also many solder joints look cold in my opinion. I think the toaster oven heat distribution will be reasonably uniform away from the board but at millimeters above the pcb surface i bet it is significantly less uniform when oven temperature is changing. I think your presoak time is insufficient. The profile curve assumes you have a powerful well distributed heat source, which you don't. So you have to adapt the curve. Presoak time especially is something that won't hurt components if you extend it for a couple more minutes at 150 deg C.

Here's an idea for the big parts. Put a dollop of solder paste on a visible part of the big piece that won't get in the way (top of USB connector as an example). When you see the dollop melt, the whole connector ha reached temperature. Another idea is to solder the big components first. They can soak longer than the little parts when you re-solder with the added tiny parts.

@erezra good point on refrigeration, we do that. Do you have any references discussing solder paste getting into skin?

Do you have a part# for the .0030 adapter you're using? I didn't see it in the catalog. Also it looks like mcmaster changed the design of the pen slightly, now it's got a push button that deactivates the vacuum, instead of covering a hole.

What model of Fluke multimeter is that? Also is the thermocouple custom or can I buy it for my multimeter?

Can you explain in more detail how you modified your aquarium pump to become a vacuum?

@dr4gorn We got an email saying that the part number we had may not be correct, trying to hunt down the right one! The OD on the piece in the video is .028inches.

The excess solder on the chip components is a reliability issue. It will cause stress to transfer into the components, causing them to fail with vibration, movement and heat/cool cycles.

Hello! I work on a touch solution for a machine interface and have a problem sensing multiple buttons. How do you do this? Does the µc all the work or are there other components invisible here? It's a great tutorial! Thank you!

Haha. Tyvm for the tutorial, although I must say. Ding pop tarts anyone? The thought of seeing a squarish shape in the oven waiting for stuff to melt just makes me hungry for some reason. Keep up the good work. Cheers

Please use gloves! The size of the particles makes it easy for them ti migrate into your skin. Nitril gloves provide cheap protection. Also, you might want to buy smaller quantities and keep them refrigerated as the some of the fluxes degrade over time.
