Obviously Green has a much wider radius of effect; I seem to recall Luthor mentioning 10 meters in the Action Comics Annual #10? Even if it wasn't that, I'm sure he noted an exact distance. Edit: I looked the page up, Luthor said 10 feet, not 10 meters. Regardless, that's an official number, at least for the nebulous (in regards to Superman continuity prior to Secret Origins) and relatively brief post-Infinite Crisis pre-New 52 period. The number may have been different for other versions.

It's a pointless "weakness" anyway. In the majority of cases it just makes him "weak," and yet somehow villains are never able to kill him while he is under the effect. 1:46 for those curious: Lead is one of the very few materials that is able to shield whatever is behind it from gamma rays. If a solar flare were to happen, you can put your electronic devices in a lead container, and you'd be guaranteed to save them.
@CootKittehLily10 күн бұрын
Thank you kind stranger. We ready for apocalypse now.
@alexbaker15693 күн бұрын
That's not true, lead has a high molecular density due to its high number on the periodic table, this means It's more effective at blocking radiation than less dense elements, because the gamma rays are more likely to collide with a nucleus and be absorbed by them However, it dosent actually stop gamma radiation, just causes its intensity to decrease quicker than other materials, a thin sheet of lead is going to struggle to sheild against gamma radiation, because the light isn't spending much time in the material, so dosent have many opportunities to be stopped Large volumes of basically anything can act as radiation shielding, that's why water and concrete are often used, they're not as effective as lead per cm of shielding distance, but they're cheap and easy to make very thick TLDR: lead is good yes, but it isn't a guarantee, anything can sheild against gamma rays, lead is just more effective for the same thickness, and is just as useless when too thin
@alexbaker15693 күн бұрын
With the solar flare example, the atmosphere is doing most of the work blocking any radiation, because even though its not that dense, it's 100km thick, so blocks most cosmic rays (that's part of the reason the ozone layer was so important)
@alexbaker15693 күн бұрын
Other thing, earth's magnetic field is also a big factor, but that's different so I didn't mention it, it's worth nothing one of the main reasons mars is so uninhabitable is because its lack of magnetic field and low atmospheric density causes the surface to be constantly bathed in radiation

@JacksonFactotum-rw2gs6 сағат бұрын
Yeah, that actually sounds how it would go. Batfans want to believe Batman solos the entire Justice League through prep, but really, without plot armor and artificially-induced stupidity of the characters, Batman could only ever outwit and delay them through massive investment and sacrifice, but fighting and winning a 1v1 battle with any of them is simply impossible, much less him casually soloing everyone.

These are Superman's weaknesses according to the comics and official DC data books: *Vulnerability to Kryptonite* Since the destruction of Krypton, its remains (rendered radioactive by the explosion) have been spreading throughout the universe as Kryptonite, a crystalline substance whose specific radioactive wavelength is lethal to Kryptonians native to this reality. The most common form of Kryptonite is Green Kryptonite, and its effect is directly poisonous to him. Kryptonite from other realities do not necessarily have the same effects on all Kryptonians. *Vulnerability to Magic* Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. Its permeability to certain wavelengths makes him vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extra dimensional signatures disrupt this force field. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies depending upon the special effects of the magic. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous. *The Black Tide* If Superman's chi flow is disrupted by being overwhelmed by this disturbed substance, he'll suffer from fatigue and pain; until he sub comes to unconsciousness. Eventually he will die, unless acupuncture is administered in time. *Lead* Superman cannot see through lead with his x-ray vision powers. *Solar Energy Dependency* His abilities will eventually weaken without replenishing his energy reserves with normal (yellow) sun radiation, especially if he doesn't have any direct contact with yellow sunlight. When exposed to the same red solar radiation as Krypton's red sun Rao, it causes Superman to lose his powers within a large amount of exposure until the exposure to yellow sunlight will reverse this effect. *High-Pitched Noises* Because of his super hearing, Superman's ears are extra-sensitive to extreme noises. This gives individuals like Black Canary and Silver Banshee who use sonic screeches, a particular advantage in combat against him. *Psionics*

When I was a kid, I found and read an old comic where it gave Luther's backstory. A small meteorite made of kryptonite landed on Earth and Superman got weakened by it. (I think he went up to it to move it or something, I don't recall). Luther saw him and was like, "Oh no, Superman! I'll help!" he pushed the meteorite into a lake with a bulldozer and superman flew off, but then all of his hair fell out from the kryptonite. He blamed Superman and that's why he's Superman's arch-nemisis. Lex Luther hates Superman because he "made" him bald. And this is the only backstory for Lex that I accept.
@TheOfficialPSIАй бұрын
This is definitely the Lex from the same continuity where he stole 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens! And that's terrible.
@nonya1366Ай бұрын
I like to think regardless of continuity, Lex remembers but Superman doesn't. For superman it was a heroic civilian saving him from a weakness he didn't know he had. For Lex, it was the event that changed his life *forever.*
@ChronoSquareАй бұрын
So Lex being a villain is literally because Superman made him mald?
@llSuperSnivyll26 күн бұрын
Superfriends also depicted that backstory, but it's slightly different. After discovering that Superboy was weak to kryptonite, Lex starts to work on a substance to remove said weakness, but ends up causing a fire, with Lex in danger of dying due to the toxic fumes. Superboy sees this and uses his superbreath to remove the fumes, but Lex got bald out of his incident. He throws away the cure and declares himself his arch-enemy. Because he got bald out of something he himself caused.

There is one version of Superman where the 'Kryptonite is finite' theory is explored. Superboy Prime (which is a somewhat misleading name because he is literally just Superman from another universe) is probably the most dangerous and villainous version of Superman because he has literally no weakness. He travelled every inch of his universe and destroyed every last trace of Kryptonite, so it could never be used against him. Kryptonite from outside of his universe also has zero effect on him. He also has a special suit that absorbs solar radiation (like he does) effectively turning it into an additional solar battery, so he can can fight twice as hard and for twice as long as other Supermen can.

@@soldier22881 In theory, yes. Most comic writers didn't actually think of that, so I don't think I ever saw a radiation which wasn't kryptonite that had a similar effect. Often, Justice League and Legion of Super-Heroes stories had some plot device with 'a bit of kryptonite added to affect Superman/Superboy', but it was legitmate kryptonite. Superman did trick a Kryptonian villain into recreating the same chemical reaction which forms kryptonite (and thus incapacitating himself with the small amount of kryptonite made).

@@calebowens693 there's actually a villain named Conduit who just emited radiation so strong it affects Superman the same as kryptonite. Despite the whole kryptonite rarity thing, it should be pretty easy to replicate it in its most basic form.

Pretty much. God knows if I had powers and weaknesses, first thing I’m doing is figuring out how to mitigate/handle them, or never tell a soul about them. If I were a kryptonian, I’m not saying squat about my kryptonite weakness at the start-Lex figuring out and deducing kryptonite could harm him in the movie is still some of the most insane luck I’ve ever seen. Or if I were Spider-Man, nobody is going to learn about spider sense unless they’re psychic.

Yeah the whole weakness is magic thing is completely bs. He’s more resistant to magic than anything. Think of it this way, if you were hit by a magic lightning bolt you’d probably die, or become a potato, Superman gets knocked out then goes back to normal at most by it. Sure being trapped in a book or getting body swapped, losing memories, etc, that can definitely hinder or even stop him, but it would also stop anyone. The difference between you and him is that he has other super friends and we’re just, well… normal.

Another bit to the way kryptonite doesn't work: Superman is afflicted by kryptonite's *radiation,* but he frequently and easily *travels faster than light.* Which is a form of radiation. Similar to Captain America (another peak human), he’s usually fine on his own, but has gotten a monstrous power creep simply so he won’t look useless when put with the heavyweights. At this point, I’d honestly be fine if someone just made him a good guy vampire. Guy has enough resources that he should never need to eat somebody, he’d be superhuman physically, AND he’d have a bunch of unique powers that would fit his aesthetic and fighting style.

Gonna nerd out here and touch on this as much as possible. #1. Kryptonite has an effective range, usually depicted as the distance of a room so I'd say 12-20ft. So putting the rock on the would cause Supes immense pain. Though this also could be due to relative size of the kryptonite. I do agree with the heat vision solution outside of the affective range. Just BAM gone (Hell when he goes rogue, he could just nuke people with those beams. Though science people wonder if destroying with the beams would just make a very deadly gas) #2. Kryptonite Bullet is effective for two reasons, 1. More than likely a Kryptonian wouldn't be expecting a bullet that could hut them and would just try to tank it. 2. Once the bullet is fired, if their in effective range, they'll already be losing power and in immense pain. #3. Gold Kryptonite - Effective Distance 1 meter (Roughly 3 ft), the radiation from this turns a Kryptonian effectively Human, permanently. #4. Red Sunlight and red sunlight radiation quickly drains a Kryptonian of their powers and yellow sunlight stores. Basically crossing a room under red sunlight will have a Kryptonian completely human in vulnerability by the other side. This is often used to imprison Supes and his family. Thought Yellow sunlight will quickly recharge them. #5. Attacks of sufficient power can hurt Kyrptonians. Simply put, they're not truly invincible, just sturdy and need significant power to be hurt. Usually someone of similar strength or greater. Speedsters can hurt them, weapons of a significant output can hurt them, etc etc. Though the most common tactic is to try and weaken a Kryptonian first before fighting them, which is why Kryptonite is used so often. Side Note - There is WAY too much Kryptonite out there. Literal tons to a mountain worth, much of which Batman and Lex have/had stockpiled over the years.
