One thing to note: Bruce isn't just trauma, he's internalization. He fights crime on similiar grounds as the criminals he faces. Rather than fighting the infrastructural problems with Gotham that lead people to crime.

But Gotham also needs the Batman. Everyone in the city would have died multiple times over if Batman hadn't saved it all the times he did. Look, in the beginning of his career Batman concentrated on fighting the organized crime that had a stranglehold on near every aspect of life in Gotham city. He did a lot to stop, or at least mitigate, that problem. I mean, you can argue that he is the reason why Super villains became a thing in Gotham but the current status quo of super villains being ascendent in Gotham is actually better then the old status quo where the mob controlled everything and basically all politicians and police were corrupt and on the take. Now just most of them are. Progress!
