Good lesson as always Elliot, but I've noticed that nowadays even Southern English people are starting to tap more t's (as in 'better') like Australians do. Some of them do pronounce the t in 'better', but some just tap it like Australians and Americans (of course, unlike Americans they still don't pronounce the r).

In France, I initially studied whatever English the different teachers adopted. Now in university, we study British English in terms of pronunciation, and that's really the one I love and want to learn. I've been to the US for 4 months and enjoyed the fact that it was kind of looser than English and therefore, it was easier to understand in a general way. The thing I like about British English is that it seems to me as though BE was harder to get into, but that once you've got the sense of how it sounds there aren't as many variations and it makes it easier to study it as one single accent. I don't especially use your videos for the grammatical elements that you bring -- although a little reminding is never wasted -- but you really help me practice my British accent and that's great for me, thanks!

I'm an American (Texas) who's been trying to imitate the generic RP accent since I was young and have ALWAYS failed. Thanks to your videos and the help of a close friend from Kilburn, I've finally picked it up, just in time to start my new D&D character, a sorceress. Thank you so much for your help! I know this isn't exactly what your videos are designed for, but you've given me hope, haha. Luckily, medieval times didn't have KZbin, so I don't have to dread attempting that one! Also, your accent is really spot on for someone from Colorado. You don't give yourself enough credit!

I learned (or learnt) English at school many years ago and it was supposed to be based on British English (probably because I live in Portugal and the UK is closer). I don’t have a specific accent but is definitely not British because my teachers were also portuguese and I had a lot more contact with AE (films, music, etc) than BE. Once now I’m fluent (in spite of the mistakes I make) I’ve dedicated my free time to listen to videos about the different accents from America and within the UK as well. I can’t replicate them but it helps me identifying and understanding them better.

Hi Elliott! In pre-war Japan my parents told me they were edcated in British English, but after WW2 we study American English at school. I used to live in London as a toddler, so watching your pronunciation lesson is realising how I actually speak, so it may not be necessary for me, but the American accent always surprise me even though I have been to an international school with American people surrounding me for a year and I enjoyed your lesson, I always do. I always think the Japanese people should study British English, because the pronunciation is much easier for us.

I’m a Taiwanese (ps.a country next to China), once a famous writer at the time he taught in a university introduced the American KK phonetic symbols into my country, so we Taiwanese speak American English as a whole. But the thing is, I have a better taste in British English, it sounds elegant the main reason. But another reason is British English weakens the “r” sound in the words, it makes it smooth and easy to pronounce in the oral cavity, and saves my strength for my tongue!!!

It is funny. I have been taught British English at school (as they called it in Belarus haha). But since they don't really teach pronunciation at schools mainly focusing on grammar, pupils cannot speak nor understand the speech properly (not to mention that they cannot differentiate the accents haha). So when I started hanging out with a very international group of people I noticed that the way I speak was different like I was saying twenTy and they were saying tweNy and I was like wtf maybe I was wrong, and I switched to tweNy haha. But now I've figured what happened hahha. I love your accent! hope to have a similar, one day :D

I’ve studied at an American Oriented English school. Not only learned about accent and spelling but also about the American Culture. Because of that I ended up living in the US for 3 years. However, now I work at one of the best English schools in my country which is all about the English Culture although they nowadays promote diversity in the English language. They used to teach RP English in the past. Although English diversity is promoted we must get familiar with the English Culture, UK wise

In India we're basically taught the British accent(I believe that the RP accent is the closest to ours) but with slight differences in speed of fluent speech(we talk much slower than you). But for some words we use an intermediate between the British and the American accents. For example in the word 'Tuesday' we pronounce the 't' like Americans but the 'u' like the British. Same for 'KZbin' too. There are a few words which we pronounce completely in the American way. So overall we speak the British accent with influence from the American one.

Hi Elliott, First, in answer to your question, I studied British English when I was at school. My teacher came from the UK and she couldn't speak Dutch. So we were forced to understand everything in English which, I think, is a very good method to learn a foreighn language! I am a guy from "the old generation" (58 next month). We didn't have things like internet and there weren't as many films on TV as today. We would only use English to read a book or when going on vacation. That's why most people of my age speak pretty bad English or at least they make many mistakes. Nowadays children grow up with the English language. They hear it on TV, internet and they need it for daily life and social media. We even "borrowed" English words and Expressions in Dutch. But... most of the time children learn the American pronunciation, not Brittish. I prefer Brittish English, but hearing American around me all the time, confuses me sometimes. That's why I like your channel which I've found since a week. You really help me a lot to improve my English accent in the way I want it. Hopefully some day people will notice this on my own KZbin channel. Perhaps you have some tips and ideas on how I can learn to speak English without saying "eh" all the time while looking for the right words. The answer might be that I should visit the UK more frequently. hahahaha. Anyway, thanks a lot for your lessons on KZbin and I will certainly recommend your channel to others! Kind regards, Mahdi

However, my teachers never paid much attention to our pronunciation anyway, unless it was horribly wrong. There wasn't enough emphasis on learning the sounds, accents etc. Just grammar.
