We moved our family to Valdez fifteen years ago and I am SOOO glad we did. We didn't have any family here but we quickly made some good friends who became our support system. I wouldn't have thought to include the support system in this video but you're right--it is vitally important to have. When I got a call in the middle of the night to help a friend pull her car out of a snowbank, I knew we had found our place in the world; this is where we need others and we are needed as well.

Had to laugh at the tip around efficiency of the house because we just moved from Saranac Lake, NY (a nearly identical climate (including day length extremes) and often the coldest town in the Lower 48) to Colorado. The first time it dipped below freezing I was horrified by how drafty the townhouse was and had to remind myself that it was going to be back up to 50 in a couple days instead of the "Well below zero for weeks at a time" that I was used to for winters, LOL!

Great info. When we lived there, one of the things that drove me bonkers was how many companies in the Lower 48 won't even ship to AK. Talking about the engine coolant. There is a differance in antifreeze mixtures that run threw your engine. Most peoples cars and trucks run on a 50/50 mix of antifreeze to water witch is fine for about -30° to -35° at max, but not for days at a time. It is very bad for the engine to let water/engine coolent to freeze in the engine because water expands when frozen. When the anti freeze or water in the engine freezes it expands and has no where to go so it breaks your engine. So it'll be either a few thousand dollars to replace your engine or you just buy a new car or truck

You can bring a most long gun (not black guns) through Canada but need to fill out the appropriate paperwork prior and present it at the border crossing, generally no handguns. There is a fee $25 a couple of years ago and a two month time limit on the length of time you can have the firearm in Canada. Check out the Canadian government website prior to leaving and to download the paperwork and current laws.

Keep in mind you can take firearms through Canada but there are guidelines. No pistols but you can carry rifles as long as they are a certain length, if I remember correctly. We brought 2 rifles with us when we left North Pole in 2012 and there was a fee involved so make sure you know the regulations. **make sure your dogs and kitties are up-to-date on shots and have a health certificate or you will not be allowed through Canada. ***You can also travel with a pass card. It's a scaled down version of a passport which is a bit cheaper than getting a passport if you have a large family or on a budget. I hope this helps. 😊
@alaskafootprints5 жыл бұрын
I was scrolling to see who else was going to mention this. You are correct. I will say its much easier to fly them through TSA then to cross Canada with them though. We've done both ways. It takes a bit longer at the border when you do declarations, but surprisingly not to bad. Just need to read all the regulations before going, and make sure your paperwork is complete and ready to hand to the agent. They made us go in the office to declare. Also, your dog does not need a "health certificate", this is only for flying. Canada only requires that you pet has been rabies vaccinated as of this year, so you need a copy of that. Personally , I highly recommend anyone driving, pick up a copy of the "Milepost" Magazine. Kudos to Jessica and Bert... Great tips overall! Not only about the coolant, but in most of the interior, I'd get a heater block put in as well.

I feel the need to mention that what is the game changer for people that live in Fairbanks or North Pole is the Internet. Back in the day both Fairbanks and North Pole can feel very isolated. Too many of the people I was with were barracks rats; all they wanted to do is sit in their room and watch TV. The internet gives you a outlet to the outside world and to keep in touch with people. Apple Iphones where you can see literally the person and the room they are in. Your channel is the perfect example on Good and constructive use of the web. On how to stay informed and in touch; to prevent 'cabin fever' or a major case of becoming stir crazy! Now, mind you everything I knew of was individually owned back then like restraunts; there were no carl's jr or burger king or subway then. Fairbanks and North Pole has really evolved and have become somewhat modern. I loved it then; I would really love it now although i'm not 21 anymore. I would still love it.
