3:05 The Aussie salute, otherwise known as the Barcoo salute (named after the region around Barcoo River, Queensland, is the gesture commonly deployed all across Australia to deter bush flies (Musca vetustissima from the human face. The movement responds to the fly found in Australia, the bush fly. The Musca vetustissima is attracted to such fluids as saliva, tears and sweat,[5] resulting in them often hovering around human faces. With things such as cork hats popularized to help keep off the fly, the gesture can be spotted across the country, not just in regional areas. The gesture is so common in Australia, it can be commonly seen in media. Such illustrations of the gesture colloquially referred to as the "Aussie salute" include KZbin videos, national television, and online publications.

I second the Thermacell, for mosquitoes. I haven't ever used it for anything else. You have to give it a few minutes to warm up, and place it a little up wind. I didn't know that they still made the citronella coils. I remember my parents buying them at the drive-in concession stand and burning them to keep the bugs away. There was no A/C in the car so all the windows were down. I was just a little bit waaay back then.

Love camping, hate bugs. I use the Thermacell rechargeable repellers. I have one by the rv door, one on my folding camp table and one inside my little 6ft Quick Set Clam shelter. I also have that rechargeable bug zapper I hang on a garden hook by the door of my Clam. I have a tiny one for inside the rv just in case one of the wee buggers gets inside. My back up is an old fashioned fly swatter. When I walk my dog early in the morning when the no-seeums are rising out of the grass, I wear socks and long pants. I have a light weight safari hat with fly netting . I’m the person you want to sit next to, the bugs choose me first.

One thing you were worried about roundup last week. I worry about anything I inhale or breath thru or put on my skin. Especially on amazon or ebay so many knockoffs. Who knows what chemicals they put in things that burn or say a filter you breath through. Its hard and cost more but most of those items I try to buy in the U.S made. I know parts come from china, that are made here. I am trying to drop the odds of getting dangerous stuff. I don't even buy car oil filters on amazon or ebay because need my car to function properly not taking a chance.

My dear mom that raised toy poodles in the 60's told me that the hard freeze they get in Salt Lake didn't let fleas survive year to year, so maybe your area being cold is the trick, but I had no problem when I had a dog here in Phoenix either. Kevin, I’m on the TN-GA border, right off I-75. The bugs are awful. I use Cutter outdoor fogger to clear the area. Then I fire up two Thermacell tiki torches and I have two more tabletop units if I need them. I also have the regular tiki torches for the perimeter grilling area and I use the citronella oil in them. Each of the thermacell units costs approximately $5 to burn for 4 hours. It’s cheaper if you buy the large multi-packs. I just stock up over winter and accept the fact I’m going to spend $10 a day to remain bug free. It’s worth the cost!❤TN Nana

Every home needs work. Especially if that home rolls down the road. Vagabond is looking good. Congratulations on being healthier. Its not easy but worth every sacrifice. The Woof Pack 2.0 is looking well. Martini is a brave little thing. We had a dog just show up at our place a few decades ago that was afraid of loud bangs. When we took him to vet, they x-ayed his stomach. (He was vomiting). Anyway, he had a bullet in his body. That was the cause. It had been there for a while and it was too risky to remove. Blue lived to be at least 18 years old. But when there was a loud noise, he'd hide under the covers on the bed. I know that Dexter was not traumatized in that manner. Or any other cruelty. But animals react to different noises. And different places. It may be combination of things. You are a thoughtful person to put his fears first. Following your lead, we bought a weed burner. Its great. Lord Jesus guides my life. Prayers for Felix.and his family. Prayers for all.

If you have an idea of where they are on the ground, once the doggies are in for the night, you can pour boiling water there. At least, there won’t be a small army where you sit…just an idea 😀 But citronella works too 👍

the only mosquito repellant that I've seen work is the one from Home Depot those green coils in the clay pot as long as there is no wind, and i use them old oil lamps with the mosquito oil.

Yes those green tip matches are the worst! We use a charcoal grill and these were such a pain to light.

I've heard that you can toss a few rosemary sprigs onto your fire pit and the smell of burning rosemary will keep the bugs away.

I usually pick up 3-4 citronella plants from whoever's got them and place them about 10-20 ft apart around what you want them to avoid. Noseeums suck lol but they seem to be deterred by same stuff that gets mosquitoes. Carry a weighted mosquito net - that's what people are missing, gotta be able to get it over something in a hurry if evil bugs appear ;-) (or have a handful of clip on fishing weights to temporarily weight it, and cast that net)

Seeing Dex breaks my heart. He looks just like my yorkie who passed 1.5 years ago from kidney disease. I miss him everyday. He was 14.
