Yeah the Midget had a hardtop fitted which was popular at the time, and then Webber carbs etc, he was featured in a magazine Im not sure which one though I do remember that they spelt his name wrong and he was a bit dissatisfied 😂 The Dolomite was ( if I remember well) a boxer engine quite a novelty I will ask to make sure.. keep building buddy !!!
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
A boxer in a Dolomite must have been quite the shoehorn! They're wide engines! I'm a huge Subaru fan, and did consider an STI engine for this build at one point, but without major surgery to the hood to incorporate MacPherson style suspension, it was never going to have a hope of fitting. Oh well... a V8 will have to suffice! 😄 Cheers man!

Nice build so far, very cool. 👌. You should have cut channels in the floor pans to recess the frame, then welded floor pans to the frame for tremendously more body/frame strength. You could at least made the notchs in the main rails deeper to tuck the frame up for more ground clearance. Metal fab tip: please use an electric orbital sander with 180 grit disks to finish dressing your welds after grinding for a seamless more uniform look, it will find your low and high spot quicker, it will help you roll welded edges beautiful and save using a lot of filler. Great father son build 😎😎

when the body paint colour is chosen, i hope it will be british racing green. what all gt 6 mk lll s should be. can't wait to see the finished product. although i'm concerned about the rear end geometry in corners. the old swing axles on the spitfires were dangerous and in the final years of the gt 6 the spit's rear end was used. i thing they called it the swing spring, because the transverse leaf spring was not fixed to the frame but was allowed to move side ways. i found them lethal on my spits. it would swap ends at the least provocation when driving the limit. i had three spits and a 72 gt 6 mk lll. my gt had a british leyland racing suspension and was extremely low to the ground. the springs were hard as a rock and you could feel every crack in the road surface, but the result was the gt was super agile. my gt had the old style double wish bone rear suspension with the rubber axle joints so it handled well. good luck.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes the swing axles are scary. Our new geometry should be fine, we also used to have the Rotoflex setup and this is kind of similar - but has better camber curves, more adjustability, and much stronger components. Cheers! 👍

Given how small this car is, the power ( or more relevant torque ) to weight ratio is going to be ludicrous! Live long and prosper boys, loving every minute......
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil, we're estimating the curb weight to be ~2200-2300lbs and 350hp/360lb/ft so yes, should be entertaining! Not planning on detuning, skinny tires and a reserved right foot will help. 😎 As for speedo limiter, well, mechanically it'll hit 200mph, but there's not a chance of us ever attempting that, lol! We'll be using the Holley Terminator EFI eventually so if we can hook up the trans signal we may indeed put some kind of limiter! Cheers! 👍

Very cool build! Are you going to put those rear suspension links' chassis side bolt mounts in double shear? I hope so, I would certainly sleep better if you did.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the concern, it's something I've always pondered on myself, but it's single sheer from the factory on the hub side of the link... So........ Originally the chassis side was double sheer, but with the GT6 being so much lighter I'm just not 100% sure if it's really necessary. You'd still do it?
@mgermca4 жыл бұрын
Yes I would. IMHO it's good engineering practice to put bolts in d'shear wherever possible. Agreed, much more difficult to do on the suspension hub end of the links but ideally it'd be done there too. You know, bolts were never designed to work in bending. Think of the stress reversal cycles there, every time on and off the power in what is now going to be a very high performance car. Probably a 3/16" thick vertically oriented flatbar would do it, " a couple ounces of prevention is worth a pound of cure ". Keep up the great work!

How do you weld so the welds do not twist the weldment in to a pretzel. You had a problem with the engine cross member bending.
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
The main reason the crossmember in Ep21 warped slightly was because material was removed from the same side that the welds were added. Together, this pulls on the steel and makes one side shorter than the other, causing the bow. The rest of the frame (such as these front extensions) could be welded in stages on opposing sides to help control the heat and how it pulls on the metal. Usually outside corners first, inside corners last, and a criss-cross pattern is the best method. Bracing everything adds security too! Cheers James!

You guy do really well for garage mechanics. Are you guys engineers? Thanks Spooln272

Thanks man. I went to college for mechanical engineering technician / industrial millwright, but this has mostly been a lot of online learning and practice! ✌️

Been looking forward to someone stuffing an LS in one of these (or a MGB-GT). Oh and by the way, zed is dead. New subscriber.

@@FanatikBuilds Is it preferred to have the prop shafts horizontal at ride height? I finally drank the Kool-Aid (Patreon supporter). What took me so long? Love the channel.

On the frame what is the wall thickness 3x2 or??
@FanatikBuilds3 жыл бұрын
The main rails are 3x3 with a 0.125" wall - likely could have used 2x3, but went this route as it looks a bit more original to the car! If you can fit 2x4s for your main rails, you would be far better off!

What model Lincoln welder is that?
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
It's the Mig Pak 140 - been a great unit that we would definitely recommend! If you have a 240V outlet, go with the Mig Pak 180 though, it'll be much better with heavier gauge material.

Doubtful, but I'd rather overbuild it than find out it was too weak! 😅

18:45 Have you given any thought to "what's next" or "filler content"? This project, while a great audience builder, won't go on forever or satisfy all viewer interests; as the mileage of your RC videos shows. You are obviously an engaging host and a mindful builder/editor, so that just leaves reaching out to that future audience. "binky" is a good example; the fact that it's a hybrid mini build is mostly irrelevant, due to the immense amount of and hyper focus on, the fabrication aspect of the build... nobody cares if they finish the car anymore, they just wanna see 'em make stuff.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Given it lots of thought, first off, this channel is really trying to center around building things, so as we get you all caught up with the project, video style will change slightly to reflect this. Secondly, if we can grow how I'd like, future projects are to be plenty! Thanks for watching! 👍

Nothing scary or problematic about more than 100% anti dive. A large proportion of drag race chassis built in the last 14-18 years are that way. In use, you push the tire against the asphalt, starting from a very low static ride height.

I don't think that's a Triumph anymore. That's a custom with a Triumph hat on. It's cool as hell, but I think you're getting down to around 10% original car.
@FanatikBuilds3 ай бұрын
Well, it's still a Triumph ... that's what it looks like, and what the vin says... but yep, the only thing original is the bodywork, and a large percent of that is new metal! You see some companies nowadays doing "recreations" of old cars, that's what's going on here. 👍

I know you Americans think any proper car should have a V8 but a British sports car should be a straight 6. Why not a BMW six?
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan, just fyi, we're Canadian 😊 ... Firstly, we wanted 300+HP without any forced induction, a wave of torque in other words. V8s are pretty good at this... Also, it needed to be small enough to fit the engine bay which is tinier than it looks. Lastly seeing as neither dad nor myself have ever owned a V8 we thought it sounded fun. More info in episode 10 if you are interested. Cheers!

Major Fabrication! Nicely Done!, I've got a GT6 too that will be a total fab job. But thumbs down on the LS, c'mon man you can do better!
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
It's an LS-4 that we're putting in... the one no one bothers with because it's out of a FWD car! Goal is the cheapest all aluminum LS we can get... Lots of reasons to choose this engine, check out episode 10 for more info 👍
