Today we're fabricating a cradle (crossmember... subframe) to get our Crown Victoria front suspension mounted up! There's a lot of geometry that goes into suspension design, including: Camber, Caster, Toe, King-Pin-Inclination, Scrub Radius, Ackerman, Anti-Dive, Roll-Center and Instant Center. Not to mention it all needs to fit in our tiny car...
That's a lot of stuff to keep in mind, but it's all important, so you gotta do what you gotta do!
Our 1971 Triumph GT6 is receiving a transplanted 5.3l LS4 V8 and Mustang T5 gearbox... among others things... like a Corvette Dana 36 differential... and a bellhousing from a Jeep.
So. Not exactly your typical Triumph.
Next time we'll finish up the rest of the suspension mounts and press on with getting that V8 nailed down - so SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss anything!

That was one of the best explanations of steering and suspension geometry I've encountered. You guys went from making fun, dimly lit, DIY-feeling videos (that I really loved) into making a truly artful and well-thought-out build series that rivals the likes of Binky in quality. This is the best video you have made on the Triumph yet! So excited to get caught up!

Back in 1980 I put a 2.5 liter inline 6 from a TR-6 into my 1968 GT-6. I adapted a Borg Warner T-50 overdriven 5 speed, Chevy Monza clutch, starter to it. Then I built my own manifold to mount a Rajay 301B60 turbo that sucked through a 2 inch SU carb. I added water/alcohol spray into the carb that came on at 7psi boost. There was no waste gate and I saw about 13 psi boost a few times. This car would break the tires loose in 3rd gear at 3200 rpm going up a freeway onramp. It was faster than my friend's Turbo Carrera. I think I blew something like 11-13 rear ends and never flogged the clutch. 40 years ago we didn't have the vast array of parts we have now. The bottom end of the engine held up well but the piston ring lands would break. I put in 3 sets of pistons but couldn't afford custom forged units. It needed a 4th set of pistons but I let it sit and lost interest after buying a Ferrari 308 GTS. I sold it. I had 6 GT-6's and 8 Spitfires, new and old body style. They were fun little cars. I still have a Chevy V-6 powered 4 wheel drive late body Spitfire on 33 inch tires in my garage somewhere. Needs a new trans.

Wow! You guys are getting into some serious engineering! There must be so much more going on offscreen, as you guys are coming back from scrapyards with bits you know you can make fit with good suspension geomentry and even understanding the geometry of the vehicles you are removing them from. Great series and really improving something that was a essentially a very pretty price of junk!

MY GOODNESS WHAT A REMARKABLE BUILD!!! I will be installing a Volkswagen 12 valve VR6 engine and entire MK4 electrical system into a 1968 GT6 sometime in the near future. Just last week I modified an OEM VW bellhousing to fit the short block up to a TREMEC T5 transmission from a 2008 Ford Mustang with a 9"/228mm friction disc, stock flywheel/PP, a bit of aluminum plate and some TIG welding. You mentioned at 6:53 additional calculations required to set up the front suspension geometry properly but you won't bore us with that now. Yes, please whenever you are able to do so as an engineer (W.E./M.E.) I would be thrilled to further expand upon my knowledge base. Calculations are GREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT! Hahaha, keep up the good work. This is such an epic machine.

I'm using 2003 Crown Vic front suspension mounting points and a few parts for my Model S turbo LS swap project. The stock lower A arm bushing centerlines are not parallel to the vehicle centerline, front cl to cl is about 28.5", rear is around 33". I'm starting on my frame in a few weeks. Great videos, thanks.

Great build! Great production quality! looking forward to the next segment, and YES I for one would appreciate you going into depth on steering geometry. There can never be enough info concerning this important topic in car builds. Yes maybe there are many other videos out there about this but almost none of them look much at anti dive/squat. Most all Crown Vic's dive severely upon brake application. Maybe because of the combination of ride height and a heavy nose. Some dive I think is desirable but not Crown Vic amounts. Jus sayin.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We will definitely cover the steering geometry when the time comes. Likely will be making a suspension geometry series as well as a few people have expressed interest. The GT6 had little to no anti-dive from factory so anything is more than nothing! It also about half the weight of a Crown Vic so no there's no way this will drive like one! Cheers 👍

G'day from West Australia, 😉👍👍 Methodical, Mathmatical, Metal Mania abounds!!! Just as a suggestion, foot well firewall area behind front wheels will need panels to be reversed and welded in again!!! Consider 1 power, 2 cornering and undulations in road surface, 3 lower control arm bush flex!!! Tyres will scrub possibly lock momentarily, very unsettling during spirited driving through twisty stuff!!! Personal experience speaking , as preventative measure is all🙂👍👍 Aaaand 40yrs as 3rd gen Engineer, that almost lost one of my own car's from exactly what I saw on your car at full lock!!! Otherwise tipping my hat to you both😉🙂🧢👍👍 "Old time mark of respect"

Nice job, excellent engineering, quite the project. Stock GT-6 suspension would sometimes fail in a corner as the bottom ''ball joint'' had Acme threads that would crack and dump the frame to the ground in a shower of sparks. In the 1980's I had 6 GT-6's and 8 Spitfires with both old and new body styles. A GT-6 was my college car in the 1970's. Cost $600. I loved that car.
