This is normal behavior when a member of the troop is Ill. They know something is wrong but they do know she needs to get up to live. In the wild, to be sick,lie down for a long period of time is not a good sign to the gorillas. They are processing this new behaviors. Please be kind everyone.😮

My heart is broken, and I'm in tears watching this. I know Nene was never a particularly "nice" gorilla, but she can't be blamed for her personality nor for doing the things that come naturally to gorillas. I have to agree with the people commenting that this appears to be close to Nene's end, she is weak, has very little appetite, and isn't responding to the troop's efforts to rouse her. As one of the last wild-caught gorillas in captivity, she will always be special to me. Most of her choices were stolen from her, but she lived her life the way she wanted as much as possible. Nene, my lovely, feisty old lady, I wish you a peaceful end to your pain. Your legacy lives on, although I will miss your cranky, droopy-lipped face. I would gently hold you or just sit with you as long as possible, but since I can't I hope somehow you can feel all the love we have for you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Nice that humans continue to put these and other animals forced into captivity, humans did this to them and continue to put a male gorilla with a female gorilla in the same enclosure so they mate and breed is absolutely disgusting extremely terrible... yet they keep doing it, and alot of comments are people saying that they hope kiyomasa gets a good female or that annie gets a good male or people hope annie gets put with gentaro, all this absolute nonsense,, people actually comment those things,, look at gorilla haoko, a silverback that is constantly submitting his own daughter gorillas pinning them to the ground mating them even to the point where the young male son gorilla riki attempts to stay behind haoko trying to stop him from mating and cross breeding, but its all that happens in gorilla captivity , constant cross breeding, zoos will actually put the female gorillas on birth control its incredibly insane!! I mean jesus.... yet we keep doing it them, watching them suffer through all types of insane situations that are very hard to watch, seeing how unintelligent most if not all of the captive silverbacks are.. because of human captivity. This world we live in is disgusting.

Last summer I had to bring my dad home on hospice to die. The process, the decline, looked very similar to what we are seeing with Nene. It's hard to watch & harder yet to say goodbye but dying is a part of life that all of us will have to face someday. I hate seeing the others picking on her but I have a feeling their intention isn't to be mean, rather to try and fire her up & get her moving. Whatever the future holds for Nene, I only hope that she is surrounded by love, comfort & peace. If she is unable to come back from this, I hope those same things for her family, gorilla & the humans that take care of her. God bless you, Nene. 💕🙏💕

Agreed, we sat with my mother the day she died, a sister when she activated her advance directives to be removed off of life supporting means. Michelle passed the same day as Robin Williams. I had a hospice patient pass during a sponge bath. My sister Michelle sat with her husband. This age of pretending death is horrible is so weird, we all will die and most in old age.

Shabz and Anny dont try to hurt Nene,theyre just trying to make her move. Gorillas are nomadic species in nature if im not wrong, they constantly moving except for sleeping time. Gorilla which cant move - is dead gorilla, maybe in their heads. And all these pushes worked in the end,Nene has begun to eat.

This absolutely breaks my heart. I am so sad they have to close the exhibit but I totally get it. I think the family is naturally upset and maybe slapping at Nene in hopes of rousing her. @@mentayflor I feel Shabani and Annie just want to get Nene moving. Neither one of these gorillas has dealth with death. They sense something and are very anxious pacing. Now Genki at Kyoto she witnessed 3 gorillas close to her die. Her mother Hiromi, , Gon and Biju at another zoo in Japan. So she has experience and is a much calmer gorilla. When Momotaro got sick she remained calm for the boys. She had alot of tragedy in her life and very strong. I think Nene is the only one that experienced death. When Ricky died, Ais dad. So it is something new and they want Nene to get up but they dont realize how injured she is. That fall when she hit her head injured her right eye, right hip that was already sore. She is in pain.That is why she does not move much. They need to put her on a soft bed, not concrete, give her pain medication and palliative care in a large dwellingwhere she is in view of her family If the family cannot see her they will go crazy. If by some miracle she survives that would be great. But consider her age, her injuries and elderly take a long time to hear. I would like to see Ai stay close to her. She loves her mom and it was touching to see Nene touch Ai's face and hold hands. I even saw a video where Ai massaged Nenes back. That was very sweet. Ai seems so quiet but she is a sweetheart.

They try to get a reaction from Nene. Gorillas first have to learn to understand an unknown situation and how to deal with it. They have never experienced a situation like this and don't understand what is going on. Nene behaves completely differently and certainly smells different due to her poor state of health. There is a zoo in Germany where an older female died shortly after a new silverback joined the troop. They left her body with the gorillas for a while. The females understood what had happened because they experienced death when the old silverback died. The new silverback had not yet experienced death and tried to get a reaction from her. He even jumped on her body and hit her on the stomach. The literature describes an increase in agonistic or aggressive behavior in the group in such a situation. I'm not saying that Nene will die. I hope she will get better. I'm just trying to explain the behavior based on what I've read

Since this video was taken Nene is doing a bit better, and has regained her appetite, and as of September 9th she even looked a bit better. Zoo staff closed the outside habitat because it is easier to monitor Nene inside. She's at a high risk of falling, as I believe she already has (her eye is swollen). Zoo staff have been feeding Nene food that she likes to eat, as well as food that is high in water content like bananas, cucumber and tomatoes because she was a bit dehydrated, and is why she has 💩 diarrhea. We have to keep in mind NONE of the gorillas in this troop have dealt with a situation such as this, Nene being so sick. 4:45, 14:50 We've never seen Annie and Shabani react this way. Shabani is stressed out to no end, and is severely worried about Nene. 12:45 Shabani IS NOT attacking Nene. 15:35 He wants Nene to get up! He's in panic mode here. 16:04 So does Kiyomasa (but his way of expressing to his mom that he wants her to get up is extreme and hard to watch). What we are seeing is gorilla anxiety at its highest. The entire troop is stressed to the max, anxious and worried. These are gorillas, and not human, and their way of expressing concern by displaying IS troubling. It doesn't make sense that Annie is attacking Nene, and then 0:32 we see Annie showing concern, and checking Nene's anal glands. 19:40 Ai and Annie come to check on Nene again. I am glad the zoo made an announcement to close the gorilla habitat for now. The zoo has been flooded with phone calls from fans about Nene's condition. The entire troop needs intervention, and stress management while Nene is treated for her illness. It may be best to separate Nene from the troop until she gets better, and the troop's stress levels are back to normal.

One must understand how gorillas communicate, and then one must understand that this troop is bewildered as to Nene's condition. I hope her diarrhea clears up, but I think somebody said she is eating foods high in water content to treat dehydration, and to get her to eat her favorite foods like tomatoes. I do wonder what her x-rays and blood work are showing. Hope she is healing and making progress getting well.

Gorillas are amazing. They are superior to humans in many ways except humans are more cut throat and superior intellectually maybe. But their emotions are so strong as is their bond with each other. Im sure its not an easy situation to deal with for the keepers as well. I hope Nene will recover soon and if it is her time I hope it is peaceful. This gorilla family is loved internationally.

She might pull through this but remember she is 52 years old in gorilla years and like 102 in human years. Eventually, although sad, she will pass away from old age. She was born in 1972 in the wild. She’s had two baby gorillas, has a granddaughter she didn’t want. So, maybe it’s time. It will be very sad, but maybe AI will go into estrus and have another little nene.

This was a hard video to watch. I do not know gorilla’s when they die but I do know humans and she is displaying the same body language. She is lying in a fetal position at times trying to protect herself. Shabani and Annie are doing what is natural trying to get a reaction that they have always done and NeNe always fights back when she can. They are learning. And if notice she got up each time and attempted to eat. These animals are smart. Very interesting and if watch you will learn. They are smelling something different. I know a lot of people see this as torture but it isn’t. They are learning. Now AI seems to know what is going on and she wants to investigate alone not to trigger anything else. Shabani is protecting from Kio because he knows he is stronger. Let’s leave this to the professionals they know what’s best. Removing her could possibly be bad for the troop. When Momotaro got sick at Kyoto both of his young sons were listless and when the zoo keepers allowed the boys to see Momotaro as he was recovering Kintaro was able to squeeze through the open gate and lay next to him. The boys then started to eat again and recover. They missed their troop leader dad. So it is possible to give Nene a soft bed in a dwelling where the troop can see her and she still can rest without the troops interference. In Nene's situation she can be viewed but I dont think it is wise to keep and open gate. She needs to rest without being on guard. And though the Troop dont intend to hurt her. They swat at her to get her up and move. Sad they dont realize she is too injured and weak to get up. Kind palliative care. Soft bed, pain medications. any soft food she likes if she can eat. I love Nene. She has been my favorite and I remember one person called her grumpy lady bug. She is so petite and does remind me of a lady bug. And I endear her even when she is grumpy. Much love

This video was taken on September 8, 2024. As of September 10, the gorillas are closed to the public, and the zoo is carefully managing their condition by trial and error, with keepers feeding them interesting foods while ensuring Nene's safety. As a result, they say Nene have developed an appetite and appears calmer than at first. I appreciate your update, but the zoo is not looking out for Nene's safety. We see that she can barely move and is dragging her leg. These keepers have no idea how to care for a geriatric gorilla...it's time they learn. Nene needs to be removed from her troop, so her leg/hip injury can be treated. I understand she is old, even for a gorilla in captivity. But, we can clearly see she is injured and suffering from malnutrition. She is unable to eat the foods they are throwing on the floor. Yes, Mercy, compassion, kindness, pain medication, soft bed, and soft foods if she chooses to eat. Water if she wants. She is dying, but let it be in comfort and let her family see her. There are ways for the family to see her while protecting her. Ahh. I feel for Shabani. This is his wife of many years. This just goes to show you how much videographers hide from you. They only show what they want. This happened two days ago and no other channel has shown this. Nene is very old for a gorilla, and perhaps she is nearing her time. That’s part of life, but the others don’t seem to be handling it well. I wonder how wild gorillas act when a member of their troop is ill? It is distressing to see Shabani and the others harass her. The only one who isn’t is Ai, but she’s not supporting her mother either, like she’s done in the past, until 19:07. I hope the break from public viewing resolves some issues. 😢

I watched Momotaro at Kyoto when he was sick and his two sons who were young stopped eating because Momotaro was isolated from them. When the zoo allowed the boys to see their dad they started to eat again and recover. Genki a strong mom has experienced all kinds of tragedy and loss and took it in stride. She was the rock for the family Beautiful families deal with sickness and possibly death in different ways. But I do believe they grieve. I saw two gorillas in the wild stay near their silverback dad who died. They hooted and made alot of noise and eventually had to move on with the troop. Some people say gorillas dont have feeling. I beg to differ..They process things differently than humans but they do have a strong family bond.

Shabani and Annie are so concerned for Nene, they're trying to snap her out of being ill. It's very sad to watch. The troop won't eat until Nene starts eating. Why are these animals living on CONCRETE FLOORS without straw, shavings, or even cloths that they can sit or LIE on to protect them from the CONCRETE FLOORS??!! Maybe Nene would choose to lie on a blanket or mat.

@@SomethingAboutGorillas I appreciate your response but you must understand the videos dont show evidence that Nene's safety or medical care is provided. People are responding to what they see. And I dont see dignity laying on concrete and barely able to move. That's pain. I have a medical background and know what I see. Perhaps the zoo is making new choices on behalf of Nene. Lets see. The proof is in the pudding.
