My first wrestling show I ever attended was at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit in April 1986. Main event was Hogan vs Savage. The match was on one of the Hogan DVDs that was released 10-15 years ago.

I’ve heard stories about Wrestlers in Detroit, and how they would stay at the hotel attached to the airport. When I was young, around the time of Wrestlemania VI, I was talking a flight from Montreal to Florida. Unfortunately, we had the world’s worst travel agent, and for many years, I was convinced that a flight from Montreal to Florida took 9 hours, and that you had to fly through Detroit (sometimes it was New York). We had a 2 hour layover in Detroit at 7 in the morning. We didn’t have much to do, so we got breakfast at a restaurant, which also doubled as the airport bar. I don’t know if there was a house show in Detroit the night before, because at the bar, sat my idol, The Ultimate Warrior. I didn’t believe it could be him. It told my dad it probably wasn’t. My dad told me it probably was, as he was wearing a white jacket that said “The Ultimate Warrior”, I said that I guess it was likely, but I still wasn’t convinced. My dad pointed out that he was wearing white and red trim wrestling boots. Honestly, the only thing missing was the face paint. I later learned that airport bars are open 24/7, as they often accommodate nervous flyers who could technically be coming from a time zone where it’s not currently 7am (that distinction still stood 15 years later when I bet a friend that there would be a bar open at the airport at 5am). Looking back, I think he had probably been drinking all night, and then went to the airport bar, because he knew it would be open. I approached the Ultimate Warrior and asked if he could sign my colouring book. He did, he wrote “Feel the power of the Ultimate Warrior”. I was ecstatic. Years later, my dad told me that the waitress told my parents that we were lucky, as normally he told kids to get out of his face (or something like that, I think my dad put it more colourfully).

Being a huge red wings fan Seeing Stone cold driving the Zamboni down to the ring was what hooked me as a hardcore wrestling fan... It was excitement over load for my teenage brains
