Sommelier André Hueston Mack returns to show you how knowing what to look for on the label of a red wine will help you better enjoy what's inside. Does one varietal or region always get your tastebuds dancing? Is a particular importer known to really please your palate? What do all those icons on the back mean? Andre is here to demystify and (of course) sample six bottles of wine to see how label expectations match up with the reality of taste.

You'd pay a bottle of Sang des Cailloux in average $35 in USA, €17.5 in Europe ($21), and that would be the most expensive of the 6. The Dolcetto d'Alba by Giacomo Fenocchio is 9€ here (in Europe, the equivalent of $11) and around $15 in USA. They're all either very cheap or rather cheap wines. In France (I'm French) Sang des Cailloux isn't really seen as an amazing wine, but is in the "quite good" (4/5) category. The 2019 Dolcetto d'Alba is a fair 3/5. It's a bit sour, then earthy, but doesn't last long in mouth. I'd definitely try the Moroccan wine, which seems to be a French person cultivating in Morocco - old methods, new earth. Belgian (white) wines are something to taste, as climate change made some regions of this small country the equivalent of the German/Alsacian (FR) valleys in terms of sun, but the soil hasn't been cultivated for grapes much there in BE, so you get very complex aromes and it's often surprisingly wonderful, you're in for a fruity surprise.

My Family used to grow grapes and make wine, I worked in a wine shop for a few years, and my Father to this day frowns upon cheap wine. But the only valuable advice that I received was at a wine tasting a few years ago. the question was, when is it a good wine, and the plain and simple answer was, when it tastes good to YOU. That day I found out that I really prefer rather inexpensive, very simple wines, which are not considered high class. Made my life so much better, wish I had found this simple rule a lot earlier in life. Don't pretend with all the fancy this and that, just let your own personal taste be the judge, ignore those who tell you that you have bad taste.

It's interesting how individual our responses are to brand styling - I found the Tussock Jumper label by far the most aesthetically appealing of the "modern" packaging, right down to the size and placement of the (pleasantly uncluttered) label, the rounded corners of the labels, and the red foil. I even liked the graphical guide to flavours, serving temperature, and accompaniments. I don't really get the faux-handmade labels. The Vichingo I'd have taken for some kind of cheap swill for youngsters! Great to see how an expert approaches things.

He’s not talking about Europe vs the Americas. It’s more “old school” vs “new school”, but world is the terminology the wine community uses.

I am already very into wine and have over 30k in my cellar but the way Andre explains things is extremely.. comforting? He feels familiar. There is a certain gravity with his personality and his approach that makes a very "pinkies up" hobby into something like a back yard bbq. Keep inviting Andre or give him his own show!

I appreciate it when wine labels have pairing suggestions and flavor profiles. They are for the more casual wine drinker who probably does not pay more than 20 for a bottle and more often than not pays 10-15 dollars

Yeah a lot of good information in the first half of the video about reading labels, but if you're not going to do the taste test blind, don't even bother doing it.

@@sacamato Exactly. A *bunch* of studies/tests out there where "wine experts" do blind taste tests, and their findings are all over the place. The lesson I finally came to when I watched that - find wines you like, and drink those.

Well there's a limit to how blind they could have made it because some of those wines had a quite distinctive color. Though I agree that would have been interesting to see!

In one of my many courses, we did a Chardonnay blind tasting, and the two highest rated wines we picked were the most expensive - a White Burgundy that was sublime, and a $5 bottle of mass produced Californian stuff. It's the kind of thing you learn as you learn about wine that makes you laugh. As a retailer though - you can see the value in both. We'd label the cheap one as a "porch pounder". It's the kind of wine you'd likely see at a wedding where they're serving free booze, and when selling it, it's pretty much exactly how we'd market it too. The White Burgundy however, would live in the French/Whites section in a place of semi reverence, waiting for someone with a fairly open budget and a nice event of some kind that it would shine at to arrive and claim it's deliciousness. Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd now I want some wine.

I wouldn't say I'm old (mid 20s) but I'm on the same boat as you, I understand whisk(e)y a lot more than wine and always found wine "experts" to be a bit too snobbish for my taste, but yeah Andre is great. I actually went out and bought some wines to try after watching some of his videos; helps that wine is very accessible/inexpensive here in europe (very expensive stuff still exists, but I think most not-super-rare wines are pretty inexpensive here (germany) especially when it comes to french, italian and spanish wine)

When I went to France, a French friend told me as long as the label says "mise en bouteille" and "appellation d'origine contrôlée" I would get a decent wine.
@EdwardLindon
@EdwardLindon 2 жыл бұрын
"Mis en bouteille" just means bottling. What you're looking for is 'mis en bouteille au château' or 'mis en bouteille à la propriété' (i.e. bottled on site) rather than 'mis en bouteille dans la région de production', which means it was transported to a warehouse,.
