True fact...I'm an American who has been in NZ for 3 years, and, yeah, the Brit sense of humour is WHACK. The more you rag on someone the more you like them. you don't need to hear the sound to be able to play it, you can sense the beat through the floor and play your bit and keep in time with other musicians without being able to hear it, this is sometimes needed in huge stadiums where you cant really hear yourself or other musicians. However you are right, this is NOT the reason Tim Minchin does it, he does it because it makes him feel more at home :)
