The message was actually left on one of their machines. On a trip to Italy, they brought some friends back. This guy was a friend of a friend. They had to throw him out for running up the phone bill, eating all the food, not contributing, etc. it sounds like he was angry huh?

This is becoming my favorite reaction channel for Tool songs because you two dig in so deep and consider many possibilities, and that's what Tool is all about. I've always believed that this song is meant to be taken quite literally. I also think the music reflects this because, like the lyrics, it is a very direct, there is no subtlety. Maynard is highly intuitive with how music is perceived and how to match the lyrics accordingly. In this song, the subject seems to be lacking in self awareness because they are labeling the band in a derogatory way, yet they are not able to consider themselves as being a part of that same derogatory label. And more than anything else, I believe Maynard's lyrics and the overall intent of the band is to open the listener's mind to a greater sense of self-awareness. Usually they do this in a very poetic and metaphorical way. But there are a few songs that just get right to the point! I won't say which ones fit this description because I want to see if you two feel the same way when you hear them.

I don’t think these two are deep. But the title could be a couple things. Could be Maynard referring to himself as a musician. Putting out his art to anyone to consume including this complicit kid. I think the other part is someone buying something and not getting what they expected. The imagery is great. This kid purchasing and wearing trendy things and getting a fresh tattoo recently to claim they were the original fans is deliciously oblivious to his part in “selling out”. And of course who do you sell out to? Culture. So we all participate in culture and are therefore “the man” that we are selling out to.

The idea of "false advertising" is what I've heard a lot as the idea for the title. I always thought of it as being something you desire or want, that maybe you aren't willing to admit you want. Just as the boy being described, accusing someone of selling out while being covered in labels. Essentially not wanting to admit who he was.

In my point of view. Maynard specifically tells us what the boy is wearing to show how hypocritical the boy is. All those big name products are from people that have "sold out" long before you've heard of them. The only reason you heard of that stuff IS because they sold out, otherwise they would have never been big enough to be popular. This kid is wearing all these name brand things, drinking Coke AND has a tattoo of the band he is now ridiculing. I love it.

Always so excited for Saturday to roll around so I get listen in with you on the Tool Journey! Great job as always, everything is always perfect! If I could give you my recommendation on how to do the remaining songs excluding ones you've already done, this would be the order I would suggest. I would do one video for "Intermission" & "Jimmy," the next video do "Die Eier von Satan," Cesaro Summability" & "Aenima," and the last video would be "(-) Ions" & "Third Eye." This way you get the intro leading into each song and the reason I would put "Die Eier von Satan" in the second video and not after "Jimmy" is because "Jimmy" is quite deep and thought provoking and you'll likely have a long and good conversation about it. Hope that helps and look forward to seeing you both next week!

Hooker with a penis I believe, refers to Maynard..he is the one selling himself...the character he portrays within the band and for the fans. And finally...Intermission is the lead in bit to Jimmy...just let one roll into the other. Jimmy is a fantastic song...you will enjoy it.☆ See you two next week.👍

"The Man" in American slang refers to the establishment, especially the corporate, capitalist establishment. A lot of times the full turn of phrase is "(person) sold out to The Man." I think the sentiment here is that everybody's just part of the same corporate establishment system. Everyone is The Man. Everyone sells out all the time, so trying to take the moral high ground and point the finger at Tool specifically for selling out is ridiculous.

Honestly the best way to listen to tool is from start to finish. That is the way it was intended. Tool never wanted their music to be chopped up, this is why they resisted the early forms of digital music sharing. and the craze as of late to do reaction videos to Tool music I find very abrasive to the flow of tools music. Hooker is an indictment of stupid consumers who demean your art just because it's become too popular. The Beatles were criticized for changing as were every hugely popular band or artist. And there were a bunch of idiots after Sober went nuts on MTV who decided that Tool needed to stay Opiate and even Undertow was too complicated and not rage filled enough. But Tool is a metamorphic band. They are never the same and each album is a step in a journey. And it's a journey that starts in the Id, marches through the ego and settles in the superego and beyond.

I feel like the title might be referring to the band itself, to make money you have to provide what can be sold as well as be creative with it. The description of the kid at the start shows up that we all sell out in our own ways, sometimes life just happens that way. You cannot criticize the actions when you were still paying to receive the benefits.

Intermission is the intro to Jimmy Die Eier von Satan is literally translated as "The eggs of Satan". It's a recipe for a dessert in the form of dough balls made without eggs. The repeated line Und Kier Eier means "and no eggs" It's not about the devil or Hitler, just sounds like it. Pair one short song with the next longer song following it. The album sort of flows that way anyway.

This song is based off a real experience of a fan who they encountered I believe. Pointing out all the things he was wearing, the coke he was drinking, they were basically saying "how dare you talk to me about selling out when you've sold yourself out as well". It is kind of commentary on how we are all sellouts and slaves to money. Saying things like "I sold out long before you ever heard my name, I sold my soul to make a record" Maynard is basically just pointing out the only reason this guy or anyone knows the band is because they had to sell out in the first place and from the beginning it wasn't some option. Of all the lines of the song I find the best to be "All you know about me is what I've sold you" as that is universal for everyone even beyond actual currency; as we all have secrets and different behaviors behind closed doors but we can control how others precieve us. Reminds me a lot of the self-righteous type of people who are actually evil on the inside. Title is alluding to the band; Tool is the hooker with the penis, and they just sodomized that fan.

I believe on a surface level Maynard is calling the boy a hypocrite for saying Tool sold out, as the boy himself is deeply entrenched in consumerism and has sold out to the ideals he believes himself to have. On another level Maynard is pointing to the fact that people like this boy, that have embraced these symbols of alternative culture (vans, 501s etc.), lack the self awareness that they too are part of the capitalist consumer culture, and that it's impossible to completely divorce ourselves from that culture because we are dependent upon it, so to judge others for it is hypocritical. Not only is Maynard calling out this boy for being hypocritical, but also pointing to the fact that this boy (and those in the so called alternative culture) think they are above the shallowness of consumer capitalism. Maynard is showing that he's deeply self aware of all the contradictions he himself is involved in as a musician, but also functioning in the music business, and this awareness shows a depth of complicatedness that is try to create a form of authentic human artistic expression, yet realizing you're doing so within a society and context that can't be neatly separated from money, business and consumerism. It reminds me of Andy Warhol's quote "I'm deeply superficial".

I love coming into a comment section 10 months late. I think the lyrics themselves are straight forward as they seem. In order to make a living as an artist in a capitalist system you must by definition sell out to someone. The only question is to whom you will sell yourself. The young man wearing the trendy clothes and sipping the big corporate beverage is claiming the band is just now starting to sell out when in fact they sold out long ago when they sold him their first EP. The fan seems to have no problem participating in the system of patronage when it comes to his clothes and drink (or to Tool’s music in ‘92) but is somehow unaware of his participation in the system. The only part that might hold a deeper meaning is the title. The artist sells himself like a hooker. A hooker with a penis is presumably bringing something into the transaction that the John was not aware of when he decided the packaging was worth paying for. Like that hooker, an artist captures an audience with the packaging. Album art, videos, the general sound of a single go into creating an image that the band hopes will compel the listener to buy the album (or at least that’s the way it worked in the ‘90s when the song was written). But the best music smuggles a penis into the transaction by delivering a message inside the catchy melodies and rhythms. JMHO. Keep up the interesting discussions.

He's speaking about the guy accusing him of selling out and the guy being part of that selling out; essentially being a hypocrite. The Van, 501's, and Coke all products and they sell out as well and yet the guy accusing Tool of selling out is in essence crying out about the same thing he is advertising by wearing the clothes. Real "selling out" is doing something that goes against one's beliefs all for the sake of money. Just because someone makes money doing something they love doesn't make them a sell out and that's the point. He's not saying "you're all idiots, buy my records" he's just calling the guy out for being a hypocrite.

The song is about capitalism.. "Selling out" is a way to describe bands that made their music more commercial to gain success, but for fans of certain genres like punk rock or metal, that meant they've compromised themselves as artists. Rock and Metal have a common theme of comparing an artist selling his soul to the devil (a la Robert Johnson) to getting a recording contract and selling themselves to a record label. The boy at the beginning is one of those old fans. But he's a complete hypocrite because everything he's wearing is some brand name product. How can this boy criticize Tool for being part of commercialism when he's cover from head to toe in it.

That said, I'm sure the Tool Army really appreciates the amount of thought and attention you are giving to their favorite band (they're definitely mine). Be ready, Jimmy is an important one. You're both doing great. P.S. The great thing about Tool is that even if you don't particularly like a certain song's lyrics, the instrumentation is always great. Jimmy and Aenima are the only real tracks left. The rest are experimental and instrumental tracks.

35:00. Seriously? Off one listen? Do not get down on yourself. What, is this a contest? You had time in this vid to listen to it three times. Hopefully, that will become a thing, multiple listens. It took me years to get all the lyrics wrong in my head, but it was still super powerful.

Aenima and third eye need their own listen with any segue songs before. Some are just noises but are necessary to help set the atmosphere.

why so serious? EDIT: I've listened to tool since early 90s, some of this stuff is poking fun at the people who take their music too seriously. They have a sense of humor.

So... you guys might be over-analyzing this just a tad. A kid walked up to Maynard in public and accused the band of "selling out"... the song was his response. The kid is described as wearing/consuming all trendy corporate products at the time, yet he's clueless about it. So, taking the point even further - if the kid is calling Maynard a sell-out, he's just owning it and saying, "right kid, I'm just a 'hooker with a penis'... and you bought all my products, by the way!" Little bit of insight into this period of time: the band was pretty much broke by the time they were recording the Aenima album. They initially signed a small record deal to a small record company for 100% artistic freedom. So, when this kid accused the band of "selling out for more money" was just foolish.

26:58. I have never seen you frown so much. Just play the song again. One listen, and a conclusion? Come on girl, I listened to the song a hundred times before I even knew the name of the song. If there were no lyrics, I just tossed the case. Probably ended up in the ocean. Fuck, it’s too heavy.

Try not to over think the meaning of the lyrics or the song. Sometimes its just a straight forward meaning. The fan sold out to all these companies yet he wants to point his finger at TOOL and say they sold out to their record label by changing their original style of music to something more mainstream. Yet like Maynard says. We sold out a long time ago yet you bought our record so who's the hooker now? Lol.

There is nothing wrong with Eulogy’s sound it is purposely done that way. So get it right or the Tool army will come down on y’all hard. This fanbase doesn’t play around. So do your homework before you say opinions. Trying to warn ya.
