Sonic Prime and IDW being Problematic/Controversies

I think the argument of Sonic actually making mistakes and having doubts is actually a breath of fresh air rather then an actual reason to hate Prime. Jun’ichi Kanemaru, Sonic’s JP voice in Prime (Also his JP Game voice for the last 25 years) even said “I noticed Sonic isn’t a ‘perfect’ hero as I thought he was supposed to be portrayed, but he’s rather suprisingly imperfect. But that also means he is not a distant hero and is actually reachable and relatable” in a Rings interview 2 years ago.

I just wish the shatterverses were more interesting instead of PIRATES or UNGA BUNGA cavemen. A lot of these worlds have potential to be more (instead of being a slightly different version of the main cast). Like why not include Sonic’s large cast of characters in these shatterverses (i.e Blaze in No Place, Sticks in Boscage Maze, etc.) But I do like the IDW comics.

I would either Sega didn't allow them to use much of the characters or the creators just don't want to do completely new 3d models from scratch and use the small cast

Honestly some day I plan on redoing Sonic Prime with a few more worlds (ex. one taken over by zombies, one that takes place 200 years in the future but different to Silver's future, and one with characters swapped with one another)

I havent read the idw comics yet, but i do know prime sonic tends to get more hate due to him being the reason why he lost his friends in the first place and then still seeing nine as tails to cope with his actions. I don't hate him despite that tbh, he just didn't know better and thought stopping egg man would be a piece of cake. He's still at fault though, that's for sure, and I hope he'll try to fix everything by defeating nine in sesson 3. (Or talking it out afterwards)

What i dont like about the idw comics are inconsistencies in the writing. Because the morality is such a touchy subject it comes off as them going back in forth in how they approach it, because the consequences never have a lasting impact on the world and the fact that its shown multiple times that sonic will just be in the right eventually anyway simply by being the main character makes the topic feel pointless unfortunately. Not to mention how many events he's indirectly caused and the amount of times backpedaled on his motives. For instance he tries to revive metal sonic after Neo explicitly states he has willingly took over for eggman. Only for Sonic to end up dumbfounded when he continues to do that in the metal virus arc. Despite being the symbol of peace he actively seems to push his mentality without second thoughts. I really wish the characters didnt have to disregard logic over their emotions just for the plot to advance because every plot point is caused through drama. Im glad people enjoy but i find myself reading oneshots/miniseries more often because their more concise, better paced, and arent filled with plotholes

Ill be honest Main reason I dont like prime is the antagonists and Sonic being extremely incompetent but mainly I find the chaos council being less than convincing villains in every way and Sonic's character in the show seems to be nerfed honestly to allow him to slip up where he otherwise would not most of the council's actions are comedic and are only serious when the show demands it....then suddenly they are a geniune threat hopefully Nine wont fall anywhere close to that boat but even then hes a wee bit of a nuance now from what ive seen in the trailer....shaodw should have no reason to lay him out even if the Chaos sonic but coolade man edition shows up. but thats just my little opinion that I drop in the middle of the night lol.

While I will agree with with you that the hate against IDW is unwarranted as Sonic is completely in character with how he is in the games. Seriously hes a very freedom oriented character were they not paying attention to the Adventure games, his theme song or Black Knight? Prime's issues can be all tracked to one decision that harms itself and the brand itself at large, it being supposedly canon even though the show doesn't really try to be unlike IDW and thus invites itself to greater scrutiny then it would if it was stand alone. Prime!Sonic and friends aren't actually the main series versions in any sense of the word and wants to be its own thing, so SEGA should've made it its own thing instead.

not only that, but prime actually conflicts majorly at times, like saying everyone lives in green hill, even tho we know that's not true. there's probably more instances, but i refuse to watch tv shows to understand a video game, it just doesn't feel right, the games should have all relevant data, otherwise it inevitably gets too confusing and bloated, problems sonic already has.

I mean we don't know it's true timeline placement, so many people just assumed that it was some time close to frontires due to their recency when all we really know is that it takes place after shadow the hedgehog at minimum. And I respect fully disagree about prime sonic characterization. It's kind of in his nature to be a little over confident but his heart is always in the right place even like in the first season where he apologies to tails for not listening to him earlier. Or in season 2 where shadow keeps trying to convince sonic that the other variants are not his real friends. Only for him to deny that completely since he formed genuine connections with them and know they are the same at heart. Do they go overboard in some aspects like when eggman made fun of tails, yeah but not to an "unrealistic" degree. I don't hate frontires but I feel like some of sonic's personality was left out to service the story since generations and frontires essential have the same idea of sonic's friends being trapped but 2 different reacation to it. Again there are limits to making sonic stories serious but changing there personality to do it is not essential, but they way they react to it, sure. That's why I think prime sonic is the best and when you think about it frontires is the outlier since in the murder of sonic the hedgehog he is more in line with the past games like black knight or secret rings. I know ian is trying to do good but he really just needs a list of his core traits and try to follow them or just acknowledge them better.

@@staticplays1871 It would actually have to take place after Sonic Colors at minimum due to the presence of Cubot and Orbot but regardless people didn't really care about the exact timeline placement (as it writes itself out) but all the continuity errors and personality differences. SEGA!Sonic (especially when under Japanese writing) and Prime!Sonic are intrinsically different characters based off the very fact one is by designed to be static and inspire positive change by his actions like Goku or Luffy while the other is dynmatic and needs to mature and grow. Is there some overlap? Yes, Sonic will always care for his friends but its like trying to say Movie!Sonic is the same character as SonicX!Sonic. While I would not consider Prime!Sonic to be the worst adaption of Sonic out there, (that would be Boom IMO) I must also respectfully disagree that he is the best. As for Frontiers I have honestly don't understand what part of Sonic is missing? (You didn't specify) As its the first time since Black Knight Sonic felt fully in character again in the games IMO.

In this instance I genuinely dont get these "controversies" as a life long sonic fan. IDW Sonic is very believably Sonic to me. I've never even had a second thought about it. Imperfections and all. Prime Sonic is a little less mature than normal I think, but in that crazy confusing set of circumstances I could see someone like (a little less mature) Sonic making the mistakes and assumptions he makes in that show.
