The autofocus on the Sonys is so good I don't care about the flip out screen anymore I just use the reflection of the lens to center myself. I trust the AF enough to do its job, also outside in 4K the screen is so dimm you would not see to much ti begin with.

Hey Matt! Yeah, even without the flip out I can't not use it for vlog style stuff. Since I shoot in simple exposure situations I keep things pretty simple/lame and just use PP5 with Cine4 or Cine2. I should shoot more in Slog2 but I like keeping post color work pretty simple/fast. BTW you're killing it right now man! You're socialblade stats are on fire! Keep up the great work.

Although I had already purchased the beautiful Sony a6500 featured in your video watching it reassured me that I had made the right choice. I'm upgrading from the a6000 (which I have shots thousands of photos and dozens of videos with). I can't say enough great things about the a6000. I'm glad Sony has made yet another step in the right direction with the 6500. Thanks for your always informative and well produced informational videos. You sir are exceptional at what you do.

A great all around performer and value for a camera with so many features and quality. The 'jello effect' can be reduced when using 4K in the menu settings. The more you demand from the sensor and SD card in 4K, the more it will affect performance. Headphone jacks can be found on external microphones. The build quality is much better than that of the a6000 and even better than the Nex 7. Once you learn and get use to the menu system, it's all up you.

I have been shooting a 70d and 5d mii for years. Recently started trying and exploring MFT format for video. After researching everything I could find, ALMOST pulled trigger on the a6500. Then my usage came into play: I use the flip out screen on my Canons - even on commercial shoots. I went for the Pana G85. Couldn't be happier. And the lenses (great MFT lenses) are way cheaper than Sony's, and smaller and lighter. I can still use all my Canon lenses, but with the price savings was able to buy a really nice 25mm prime (nifty 50 equivalent). I also got an astounding travel camera that fits in my messenger bag. What I find is that I take my g85 everywhere. - and doing client work, the dual IBIS is SO darned good, that I wander around shooting g b-roll hand-held. While the 70d had been my go-to camera, the G85 has quickly replaced it, and it allowed me to get into mirrorless, and Micro 4/3s to do stuff my Canons couldn't, including hand-held shots for run-and-gun work. The a6500 was nice when I tried it, but the overall cost of the Sony system, and the key issues pointed out in this video, kept me away. Great review!

Nice review, Caleb.I own both the 6500 and the GH5. As usual, there are pluses and minuses to both. I like shooting hand held and I find the Sony, once set up properly, is very easy to shoot that way. The problem is the LCD---which can't be seen out and about. But I did find a solution for the only slightly adventurous soul. Kinotehnik make an LCDVF that is mounted with a magnet frame held on the LCD by an adhesive. They make them in different sizes but the one that can work with the 6500 is the 16X9 frame and viewfinder. If you vision isn't perfect they make different strength lenses you can screw into the eye piece. I had to modify the adhesive frame because it is a bit too wide. I did it with a belt sander. Once you have it fitting it make shooting hand held on the brightest days something a lot of fun to do. All that said, with all the video features and pic. profiles and low-light, low-noise of the 6500 I think it is superior over all to the GH5. Image quality and color are excellent--and I can't recall when I've ever said that about a Sony cam. www.kinotehnik.com/products/lcdvf/compatibility

don't know if someone already tipped you off, but I use a FeelWorld 7" monitor (same one you reviewed a while back) and If I want to hold every information on the monitor while shooting 4K, you just to shot using M mode (the still Manual mode). The only problem is that the camera monitor stays off. But I kind of liked that way, since I'll be saving the camera's battery.

Great review as always. I personally bought the sony a6300 this weekend. It is the perfect camera for me. The screen is fine as I am always behind the camera. It is very quick to get the right exposure. For the stabilization, I will be either using a glidecam or a shoulder rig so in body stabilization is not as useful to me. The overheating is really fine since I don't shoot single clips of over five minutes at a time. I shot 4k 24fps this weekend in 30 degree weather with clips of around 3 minutes on and off for 2 hours without any a problems. For me, the money I saved by going for the a6300 instead of the a6500 can be spent in better lenses. Also, charging with a battery bank is so useful.

maybe the flippy screen is hard to implement, given the awesome touchscreen features.(sleekness and compactness wise) specially compared to the flippy screen of the panasonic, the panasonic is a bigger body. thats why they'll easily implement the flippable screen on it.

I use a jib a lot, along with being further away from the camera (but in front of it) along with transient items that have to be referenced. For me, having the smaller camera with much faster/more useful AF coupled to a 7" HDMI monitor worked out great. The cool thing to go from the a6000 I have to the a6500 would be the better audio modules for the smart shoe, but I tend to use outboard recorders and a ClipMic Digital with my phone. As for the heat, it's a genuinely stupid problem. I live in AZ, and I fold out the screen along with using a 970 battery mounted to a consolidated rig to power it and keep it cool enough to record. If I stay in the garage, I can get past 30 minutes with a firmware hack. I've gone to 42 minutes, and then stopped the recording on my own using an external battery plate with dummy battery. This shouldn't be such an incredible feat, but here we are... I just view the camera as a sensor with AF drive that can record to a format that's pretty solid. The menu system doesn't bug me at all, but then again I work on operating systems for a living and find almost all of them pretty dumb at some point. :-) While I can see why some reviewers mention "why can't it be like their smartphone menu system?" in their opinions, I've had enough issues with the underlying OS that I'm OK with almost any menu system if the thing will just function. Got any favorite lenses for it?

I'm coming from the A7II to the A6500 (mainly because of 4K and 1080p120) and one thing I write enjoyed was the Right Grip not having card insert place at the right handle, because the rubber at that grip in my A7II started to unglue itself from a lot of use, so having the card insert underneath, sure its a like troublesome some moments, but it surely will make the camera last more without having to superglue the damn grip rubber ;)

I sold my Canon 70D since I want something that works better in low light. I am almost sure that I will be buying a Sony a6500, but first I want to ask you if you have had any trouble with dimmed dinner lighting or any other low light situations with the a6500? As far as I know this is the camera you want if you can't afford the a7SII. But is it good enough for wedding videography when it comes to ISO performance? I want the possibility too shoot in Slog2 as well. And also - would you prefer 18-105 or 16-70 as a starter lens for wedding videos?

Honestly- if I could set up the a6500 in a very small "build" with a small monitor, small mic, maybe small external battery (like the tube style one you showed in another video) all on a tiny cage, I think this would be my end-all-be-all. I can't imagine I would need anything else! That and of course a really good all-around lens. Been considering that 18-105 for smooth zoom and wide wide range of options. What are your thoughts?

I don't see how a flip up screen would be practical for this camera. Or, realistic, I should say. The LCD screen would displace the evf, which would make the camera wider. It bothers me when people say that just because a camera doesn't have a flip out screen you can't vlog. The autofocus is so good the function of the flip out screen is not needed. You know you will be in focus so the only other thing you need for vlogging is a lens that is under 20mm (which the kit lens is) so to say you have to have extra equipment is ridiculous. You can easily vlog with this camera as well as any a6000 line of cameras.

I´m thinking seriously in changing my Canon EOS 600D/Rebel T3i for a 4K EVIL camera, for video purposes mainly, and I´m quite interested in the Sony A6300/6500, but you mentioned the Panasonic G85 and I looked into it quickly and really liked it...Which one of these two options (or another one) would you recommend mainly for shooting music performance indoors with some artificial lightning? Thanks in advance!
@rsmith025 жыл бұрын
Definitely the a6500 as it is much cleaner in low light. I had the T3i, tested the G85 and settled on the a6500 for my work. The G85 also lacks auto ISO or the ability to check focus while recording, making it hard to use in dynamic situations.

Thanks for your opinion ;)

Every words is true! It is not perfect camera (bad display, poor battery life, overheating etc.), but it's very very good camera with very good video quality, especially vs canon!

I have the exact same assumptions about Sony and the flip out screen. I don't understand why it cannot be fixed

Would you recomend this camera for motorsports?

Kinda funny that you show a GH4 at 1:25 in when you talk about a Sony.

Thanks for this great video. I'm using the a6300, but would love to upgrade for the IBIS. Any idea if there will be an upgrade to the a6500 soon? Would be a bummer if I bought the a6500 now and then there would be a new one. Considering the a6500 is almost a year old, an update should be near. What do you think?

Hey buddy quick question. Recently bought this and am just about to try it out. Do you think it's necessary to transcode or create proxies in FCPX on my 2015 MacBook Pro?

Also I'm noticing that when using the ikan 3.5, it crops in just slightly
@dslrvideoshooter7 жыл бұрын
Depends on what your system can handle. I usually skip "Optimized" and only create proxy if I'm having issues. So far no problems editing the footage fresh off the card.

Hey Caleb, Since you mentioned "best all around camera" when speaking of the GH5, I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on the 2,5 year old Samsung NX1. It seems to be really, really tempting to buy one. For anyone who wants the best of video and stills world, it does seem to still be the best hybrid camera available. Physically, it's built quality and form factor are phenomenal (unlike the atrocious form factor of the a6xxx series), fantastic touch screen and EVF. Video-wise, it has a full sensor readout, downsampling 6,5k to 4k just like the a6300 and a6500; low light performance is not nearly as good as what Sony offers, but from what I've seen, 6400 is still very much usable. Also offers 120fps in HD. Autofocus is also not as good as what sony offers (to be fair few are, even in more recent cameras), but it's still good enough to be reliable - and it has touch to focus. And no overheating. The only thing holding me back is the dynamic range; I know the camera has gamma, black levels and luminance controls options, but judging from every video I've seen so far, it feels slightly limited compared Sony or Panasonic. I'm not sure if that (probable) difference in dynamic range is more valuable than form factor, though. Plus, the price of course. The price is also very attractive. Would love to have your input!

I've considered it, but never purchased one. I probably would except for the fact the Samsung camera division has closed down. So sad!

DSLR Video Shooter Ahhh damn :-/ Really was hoping to have some informed input from you. I can't make up my mind and I don't have the opportunity to test one before buying. Yes, their non-existent camera division is a heavy argument against it... but look at its features, form factor and built quality! I can hear it calling for me, ahah. If someone reading this in the very near future can offer input from firsthand experience, I'd appreciate it a lot. Thank you for your time, Caleb!

Is the rolling shutter any better int he a6500?

I've watched other reviews and sadly, nope. Although there's an improvement versus the A6300.

When is the GH5 review coming? Also what would you recomend, the g85, or the gh4? And whichever one you pick out of those two, would you pick the gh5 over it? $2000 is a lot of money.

For casual shooting would you recommend the a6500, GH5 or something else? I've shot stills with canon for a while so being able to use my existing lenses would be ideal. Thanks.

Wondering how much moire/aliasing you get on each different frame rates. 24/25fps 4K is gorgeous. 120fps doesn't look alright though as far as I seen from other videos. Maybe 50/60fps is better? or the camera does the same amount of pixel binning for all of them?
@EverythingFilmmaking7 жыл бұрын
120fps looks great on the a6500..not sure what vids u saw.
@MehmetKozal7 жыл бұрын
If it's not full sensor readout and does line skipping on higher frame rates it cannot be great. You get aliasing/moire/artifacts on especially fine detail like hair etc. That's what I'm asking. Probably it is good enough to use on a personal project but it is not really acceptable for paid work if that's the case.
@rsmith025 жыл бұрын
4K looks great. HD, not so much, with line skipping at all frame rates. It's fine for paid work if it's a short clip or if it doesn't have much detail to begin with.
