As Sony's new flagship APS-C camera, the 24.2-meagpixel A6600 has a lot to live up to. First of all, it had to follow the A6500, launched in 2016 with innovative features like 4K 30 fps video, fast 11 fps shooting speeds, in-body stabilization and face- and eye-tracking. For a couple of years, nothing else on the market could touch it.
What's more, the A6600 arrived just after Sony's 61-megapixel A7R IV full-frame mirrorless camera -- possibly the best camera I've ever seen. From a competition standpoint, Sony is also under pressure to top Fujifilm's X-T3, which has a higher-resolution sensor, more 4K video features and much better handling than the A6500.

For those in the sony ecosystem, the A6600 is awesome! same Z battery as the new A7/A9 models is game changing. I sold my A6000 only to purchase the A6600 for the battery, ergonomics, 4K, picture profiles, IBIS, dynamic range, color science, .... It's just flat out fun to use and easy to carry. Buying a different brand (fuji x-t3) for it's marginal improvements is not an option as i'd have to invest in and entire new line of glass. For me, the A6600 is the perfect backup to it's big brother A7iii.

@@rexlibon8908 What type of photography are you into. I noticed you said a panasonic g95. That's a mistake if portraits or is your thing especially for the price. The G95 is a micro four thirds sensor, which is almost 4 times smaller than a full frame, for example when using a 12-100mm lens it's equivalent to 24-200 on a G95. If you're Into sports or macro photography you can take advantage of the crop factor getting the extra zoom. But remember shooting open at f1.4 is equivalent to f2.8 on a FF. But if you want the best micro four thirds system, get the Olympus om-d e-m1 mark ii.

@Oldheadhiphop 4 жыл бұрын
@@rexlibon8908 If you need your camera for video or blogging than the G95 will do the trick. 😁 Micro thirds are dying though. But the lens are waaay cheaper and lighter than full frame and crop sensor zooms. Even panasonic moved on making full frames now. Olympus is the only camera maker to not give up the MFT systems. Lol

@@rexlibon8908 If you're lookin for a full frame, I'd highly recommend getting a Nikon Z6. They're around $1500 or so. The Z mount is new, so it'll be a minute for cheaper lenses by third parties, with image quality on par with Sony A7R's. Objectively. Like color depth and dynamic range. It's probably the same sensor since Sony makes all the sensors anyway(lol). And of course it has weather sealing, IBIS, and a bunch of other great features. Cheaper full frame option ya got Canon RP. I've never used one. Idk much about it so I know it's cheaper than a g95 and full frame.. Soo in theory it's a better bang for your buck

I don't really think the X-t3 can compete with the A6600. If anything it's on par but I wouldn't buy either one, but the Sony A6600 has 8% larger pixel area, which allows the sensor to collect more light on pixel level hence have less noise in low light / High ISO images. It also has 2x bigger battery, 3x max ISO. And most importantly the xt3 doesn't have stabilization... And when testing the DR and overall image quality they scored the same. So why would you want to get a xt3 anyway? At least wait for the xt4 and hope it has IBIS

I notice in the beginning of the video the set is nicely darkened and the lighting is perfect. After the first 10 - 15 seconds the camera seems to be doing something to adjust the lighting. It starts to make everything lighter. I lose my effect. I notice it when I play the video back on my computer and I can see everything. Is the camera on some sort of setting that I need to turn off? I am a beginner at this hope you can help.

I had an A6500 and then updated/upgraded to the A6600. Like most people will say, the autofocus upgrade was simply spectacular! In the end, I want shots that are in focus and sharp and it delivers in spades. The new colour science was a big improvement as well and the larger battery was a huge win. I’ve committed to Sony glass because I trust the company’s ability to innovate and deliver class leading products. I’m confident that a new APS-C sensor and body will arrive before long and I’m certain it will be another class leading contender at the very least. I’ve committed to the brand because I trust they will provide us with many valuable gear upgrade options in the future.

I bought the a6600 + 16-55mm f/2.8. After awhile I realized it's the same cost as a7 III + Tamron 28-75mm. I went with the a7III instead and was blown away by the difference in photos (I don't do video). The a6600 led me to go to full frame even though I never intended to go full frame (was an a6000 user for years!). Funny how life works. Tell you what though, that a6600 AF live-tracking is amazing. Wish the a7 III had it!

I was surprised to see how well the X-T4 coped with these tests - it did a great job. On the other hand, I wasn't so surprised to see the a6600 fare so poorly. I had a short loan of one, and since it only had a kit lens, I used old M42 lenses on it, and even for stills, the IBIS was so poor at times, I thought I'd accidentally turned it off! Years of using Pentax and Olympus cameras with excellent IBIS probably spoiled me ;)

He's contradicting himself constantly. Dual pixel is no different than the phase detect on any other camera. It just happens to be trademarked by Canon. Just because the camera can focus on something doesn't mean it knows WHAT to focus on and what to track, or can identify subject's faces or eyes, which is entirely up to software. This is where Sony beats all other manufactuers hands down. Their algorithms and recognition tech are second to none.

My big problem is that it seems like the video quality hasn't changed much if at all from the A6300. If they put in 4K 60, it would be a big improvement, since the 1080p modes on the A6xxx cameras tends to be pretty soft.

I love the small compact size of the A6000 series and the small APSC lenses. When I travel and want great shots but don't want to carry or pay for full frame at my level as an enthusiast, this camera is a must have. It's smooth top and smooth small and even sides are, for me, far superior to the Fuji or other cameras with fixed knobs and viewfinders mounted on top. I appreciate the reviewer's comments and don't disagree with him as to the camera's weaknesses, but don't agree ultimately with a rejection of this camera for many of us who need quality images with a small form factor. Rolling shutter is easily resolved by not panning quickly and I've seen a fair number of videos using the A6600 on You Tube with my large computer screen and don't find that there is any noticeable difference at all in the image quality compared to other cameras. If you are shooting a professional video with thousands of dollars at stake, sure-rent or buy a pro-level camera. But for the 99% of enthusiasts out there APSC trumps full-frame mirrorless and the Sony is a great APSC camera.

I upgraded from an a6500 to an a6600 and am delighted with the results. For me, it's a companion camera to my a7RIV and perfect for travel, street and for taking pictures of family. Unless you've used the new focus tracking feature in the a6600 and a7RIV (and a9), it's really hard to explain the attraction. It totally revolutionizes the way I shoot photographs. The camera is always in continuous focus with the focus point in the middle. Instead of moving the focus point around you just aim the middle point at the subject, acquire focus and then the camera tracks the subject relentlessly. It doesn't matter if it's a child running in a playground, an animal running in the wild or a musician making moves on stage. The a6600 just tracks the subject flawlessly. Unlike any other camera in its class. You lose the built in flash, but I bought a Godox TT350 and it's a perfect companion for on and off-camera flash.

Or go the canon route and have an unusable usb-c port that can't even charge the battery with anything that isn't PD and can't power the camera at all even though it requires the higher voltage. Just because its newer doesn't mean it's better. There's a million different implementations of usb-c. It's just a physical port. The circuitry, power standards, audio or video signals, etc. are all optional. There is no guarantee, not even that it will be backwards compatible with the most basic USB 1.0 5V power standard. *cough* canon *cough*.

@@aoikemono6414 Why is it that of all the companies that did USB-C in their cameras you had to pick the worst one (Canon) and use that as the basis of some pessimistic argument against transitioning to a newer and more modern connector standard? Look at Panasonic S1, it has USB-C and it can charge the camera, is compliant with USB-PD, and has the USB 3.0 speed, I do not believe it is a rocket science to implement. Not everybody has to 'go the canon route'. With that out of the way, I do believe Sony warrants some pessimism. This is a company that spent half a decade with the same rolling shutter problem in its sensors, same frustrating ancient menu system, same lack of UHS-II support, same lack of 4k60P. Maybe we should all just like.... not buy Sony at all till they properly catch up.

Interesting perspective, most reviews I've watched were quiet impressed with Sonys APS-C lineup. I have the a6400 and a6600 excellent cameras for Hybrid shooters. Plus they have some of the best lenses for these cameras. Surprised he didn't mention Fuji doesn't have unlimited video time as Sony does. Also you can't compare a 1400 dollar camera (now 1200) to a 2000 dollar or more Full Frame camera. They are in a different league that goes for every camera company lineup. Rolling shutter can be fixed in post as well, so not a big deal there. The bit rate I agree should've been higher, but the image quality for KZbin is still crisp.

Small size has ruled more and more for 99% of people buying cameras (think cell phone, go pro, etc.). I wanted better quality than this, but still the smallest camera body I could get, so decided to start using the Sony APSC cameras because of their combo of small size, small lenses, and great image quality. I have been shooting with the A6000 for years when I travel internationally. I can't stress how important sleek, small, camera bodies are when you are hiking around 8 hours a day, or if you are out in public and want to shoot locals without looking like an invading tourist. Small size plus light weight plus a comfortable grip (I can grab the camera from the top, sides or bottom easily) equals the type of camera I want when I travel. I've eliminated the shoulder strap and can use a wrist strap because of the small size (so cool and secure). That's what sold me on the A series. I bought, 7 months ago, the A6600 camera and am impressed with the image quality improvements over the A6000.

@@bonnevilleponds The high ISO rendition is slightly better than the a6000, but the biggest change for me, comes from the more accurate AF; especially in lower light conditions. I can't argue with anything you said. I do think however there is a lot that went unexplored that might change your conclusion. I will preface this by saying that this is obviously just my opinion and observations, having shot both. 1st, rolling shutter, No doubt, the Fuji is superior in this regard, however, even though I'm not a video guy, I know that nobody pans the way you did in your example of the rolling shutter in the Sony. If you did, your friends would be obliged to take your camera away from you. ;-). 2nd, the Fuji zooms, in particula,r are huge compared to the Sony equivalents. Go to Camerasize and compare the Sony 18-135 and 16-55mm f2.8 with the Fuji counterparts. Compare the Sony 10-18 with the Fuji 10-24, and the Fuji 55-200mm with the Sony 70-350mm. The Sony 70-350 may be 40gm heavier than the Fuji, but it also gives you and extra 225mm in reach. Not to mention, with any of these larger Fuji lenses you will need at least an accessory grip for any semblance of balance. 3rd, being a birder, but this can apply to anybody, on my Sony, I have multiple different scenarios pre programed and accessible with the touch of one button. Instant. As cool as the Fuji analog controls are, this is not possible to the best of my knowledge. I won't even touch on the huge array of full frame native, and 3rd party lenses available to Sony shooters. There is no doubt that Sony a times makes me crazy. I have no explanation for not putting the new sensor in the A6600 or not having a fully functional touch screen or a front control dial. I have no explanation, except maybe spite, why Sony elected to remove the on camera flash and the in camera panorama feature to name a few. Had Sony addressed these issues with the A6600 they would be absolutely dominating the APS-C market, but the bottom line is that you are buying not just a camera body, but you are buying into a system. You can cherry pick specs where the Fuji is superior of course, but the big picture perhaps outweighs those. As I said, just my opinion.

As an a6500 user this video pretty much sums up my own disappointment with the A6600 as an upgrade, the a6400 without IBIS but $500 cheaper looks a much better buy. I think Sony are really trying to force people down the full frame route. Im going to look at this in store in a couple of weeks to makeup my own mind but think this is an upgrade worth skipping.

Action photography is not my thing. I do videography, so in that regard, it is a great upgrade. If the sensor was so great last in the last model, maybe they felt that it didn't need improvement. The A6400 is what should be compared to the X-T3 I suppose. And they have a huge price difference. So, X-T3 is better and way more expensive than A6400. The A6600 'only' adds IBIS - which the X-T3 doesn't have. It is slightly more expensive than the X-T3 but with IBIS it just sits at a different spot.

Sony didn't change processor or sensor in ages. Most cameras that they make now are just small improvements (mostly software) of almost 6 years old A6300. Why they just don't exchange those old menus and sensor for something new already? I am still holding my a6300 but are probably going to switch to either Fuji or Panasonic G9/GH5II.

Agree! The A6600 is a mystery. Something is just not right about it. For me this is a pure sales stradegy. Sony clearly has the technology for something better but for some reason they left it out. The real name should be 6500+ or 6500 2.0 because its nearly the same camera. I really wouldnt buy it. Either you wait for the a6700 or go full frame straight away. After waiting for the successor for more than a year I admit I was really tempted to buy it but Im going to wait a little more for the a7iii to drop in price and then invest a few hundred bugs more for better rolling shutter, better IBIS, better cinematic look, better low light. The A6600 is a good choice but the a7iii is the better choice to me. I believe when you go for APSC you find that one day there is always something missing and a few years later when you want to move on to Full Frame you have all these lenses you cannot use anymore. The advantages of the a6600 dont really convince me either. Flip Up Screen? - One day you will get an external monitor anyway. Best Autofokus? - a7iii's AF is good enough. No record limit - I have never shot longer than even 10 minutes... only excedentally. Lenses are lighter and cheaper - Check the 28mm F2 or 85mm F1.8 + they are light, cheap and create a much better shallow depth of field and they are native. So after literally giving this a years thought the a7iii is the only way to go for me.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a great camera, and I hate to be negative, but all these DSLR and mirrorless cameras( not just SONY) are excellent still cameras trying to be a video camera. I wish they had form factor and features where it was a video camera that could also do still photos. For example , no built in ND filter, separate buttons specifically for white balance, frame rate, shutter, aperture, etc. Yeah they make video cameras but not with the in camera image stabilization, auto focus control, good menu system, pro-res recording (even if it has to be external that is ok) and they are $3k more money.
