This message is for all those who misses the additional settings like changing aperture or shutter within the remote control app. The key is to update the remote app !! But note: you have to update the app which is installed on your cam; in my case i did it on my A6300. First of all i have opened the sony playmemories app webpage using the internet brower on my PC. You have to login to your sony playmemories account. Then you have to connect your camera. After that choose the remote app from the list on the sony playmemories website. At the left you should see the icon to install/update the app. Click it and follow the instuction on the screen. After that your app should be updated and you will get all the feutres presented by Gary. Feedback welcome :-)

Not being able to control focus at all is a pretty large hole, so it's quite limited as a remote control, as a remote viewer it can be handy...

Also No Use of S-log when using the app.. Come on Sony!!! Let us use the iPhone as just a monitor with full video controls via the camera at least. Would be a great option, otherwise not really useful for any professional use.

Hi Gary, I was using my iPhone to test out the playmemories with my friend's A7 today, but there are only one option to adjust and it's the aperture. I was wondering do you know why? Would that be the camera needs to be updated? I was using the latest version of playmemories on my iPhone. I am thinking of buying this camera but I need to make sure I would be able to get the same control as you have shown in the video. All these features is just a must have item for me! HI Gary! Great video. This feature was one of the things that excited me about this camera as a way of saving $ on a dedicated monitor and utilizing a tablet or smart phone with a sunshield for action sports videography in bright light (as the EVF doesn't cut it). Additionally as you pointed out it also allows touch screen (something we all know the a6300 lacks) and makes features like flexible spot focus suddenly usable for video. Before I get too excited, my big question for action videography - are things like quickly panning through a corner following a moving motorcycle possible or will the lag (due to the wireless signal) make it difficult to accurately frame the fast moving subject (say like a whip pan on a tripod)???

The play memories app disables all important functions on my sony a6300, no slog, no cine gamma 4, no a lot of things. why can't i just use the phone as a second monitor without it messing up my settings. any work arounds? what does sony say about this?

hey gary. nice vid. i succesfully paired the phone and camera and can shoot stills and video but im confused that i cant set slog is it possible? i shoot all my video in slog so if its not possible it makes the whole smart remote completley useless... why would that be missing?

Oh man this is something that I'm struggling to find an affordable solution with my a6000. Too bad I can't have a feed on my phone when I'm filming myself! Am i missing something ? If i m in video mode than i can t focus by touching the ipad . ( as i can in foto mode using the smart control app ) I can enable the face detection ( in video mode ) and it does find the face , but it does not focus at the face . The only way to change the focus is to go into the app to focus area , than on flexible spot and change the focus point in the camera . Is there no way to do it via the ipad ( remote ) ?

Hi Gary! I'm trying to understand if and how I could use a tablet or a smartphone as an external monitor with my A6000. The issue with the play memories is that it doesn't show the focus peaking marks, and it refresh slowly if I move my camera or zoom. I use vintage lenses, so I only have manual focus and it could be very useful to use my smartphone or tablet in my shooting sessions. I hope you will help me. thanks!

Gary PLEASE PLEASE can you ask Sony to make the app usable with manual mode video?? I would even pay for this option and I think many others would also. AS it is now if you use the app for video monitoring it resets to Automatic Video mode only and uses Auto ISO, And basically all Auto video modes including I believe 3:2 video format. At least last time I used it with my iPhone and A7s last year. Nobody understands why this is, It would be great to be able to use your iPhone just as a monitor and be able to do videos in full manual mode. Seems quite simple and Sony could do this easily. Even if they wanted to charge for this feature like some of their other features.

The problem i found with this method is that, if you can only use creative profiles and not use Profiles like Slog on Movie mode. So youre stuck with using neutral or standard, if you trigger video with the app in movie mode.

Hey Gary, I am looking to Record nice smooth Slow Motion Videos on my Sony A6000 but cant seem to figure out the proper settings.

The highest frame rate of capture on the a6000 is 60i, so there isn't a "Slow Motion" recording option inherently on this camera. You'll need to use a camera with a higher capture rate option, or slow down the playback in post production.

You'll need to have the network enabled that is created by the phone/tablet to the camera. It's not Wi-Fi in the traditional sense of getting on the internet, but is a Wi-Fi network between those two devices.

actually, this is only half of the truth. there is of course no canon version of the PlayMemories app by Sony which only features Sony cameras. But there are several apps available for other brands like Canon DSLR cameras like DSLR Controller or DSLR Remote which i have been using for quite a while.

See that N symbol on the grip? if you have an android device just tap it and it automatically connects and launches that app on both devices. It's something that's not allowed on iOS devices.

You have to have the camera mode dial turned to the video mode. Also, the camera does not record to the phone, it only records to the camera's media card but can be started and stopped via the phone app.

Pete G. If you update your camera firmware, then update the app, it will allow you to use RAW too. I had the same problem you had. I couldn't use raw, i couldn't change aperture etc on it and gave up on the software until I updated.
