The problem with making a game (or movie) that focuses so much on story and being cinematic is that, if you have a protagonist that is unlikable and not easy for people to relate to, it makes it much more difficult to get invested in that game. Even ignoring anything else, this trailer doesn't present the protagonist in a way that makes her personality seem appealing. 🤷‍♂️

After seeing the trailer for this game, I expected the "backlash" to be over the inclusion of all the advertising. I am saddened to learn it's because of the main character's design. Are people really that shallow? This video from the ComebackKids has a guy asking "who would want to play as a character like this?", based on what? A two minute introduction that says almost nothing about her history, motivations or character, beyond the fact that she seems driven to do something others fear to try? It seems that the major issue is the character design isn't sexy or feminine enough. Who cares? This reaction seems pathetic and it saddens me that Naughty Dog's pedigree in and of itself isn't enough to get gamers excited about a new intellectual property from them. Haven't they shown they know how to make quality games? They have. So this entire issue seems to be due to be about men not finding the main character attractive. Wow.

that's the point- they don't want you to be able to choose. That goes against what they are trying to do. They tried it with AC games giving a choice and then complained that too many people chose the male character they didnt' want to you choose. That's why the next AC game made the choice a black man in japan. that way if you wanted to play as a man you had to still play as one of their favored groups. white male protagonists are the worst thing ever in their eyes, unless they are gay. Either they design and write games that appeal to the majority of gamers, or the bloated companies with thousands of underperforming employees will go bankrupt. Tencent and other Chinese companies will happily buy up all the IPs that Ubisoft, Naughty Dog, and similar studios are bound to lose. Ubisoft might have enough money to survive one or two failures, but after that, they’ll likely have to fire 20,000 employees. And if Tencent buys them, you can be certain there won’t be any non-Chinese developers left in the studio.

@ well i would say that it comes down to opinions then. You believe one thing and i believe another. I am of course happy to be wrong and the games narrative and character arc to be well written. With tlou2 i can accept the direction it took but i really disliked how it was handled. So you play the first game and connect with the 2 main leads after playing so many hours with them. The 2nd game instantly kills a main character which is fine although i think people bought the 2nd game wanting more of ellie and joel and thats not what you get. So after this death which felt silly as joel was suddenly very trusting and not cautious like in the first game but ok. After this the game forces you to play with abbey who you have no connection to or real interest in after she killed a main character you spent 30+ hours with. The story then has ellie killing so many people to reach abbey to fail. She then does this again and simply gives up. So all the killing random people was pointless to me as she could have stayed home since she didnt finish abbey at the end. I also wasnt a fan of the weird super jacked abbey character model. i understand they possibly wanted to show abbeys point of view with her dad etc but there was not enough good will built up to want me to be interested in this side of the story.

The biggest issue with this trailer is how unlikable the protagonist is right off the bat. That shit ass attitude. The whole trailer is her interacting with another character which she's being condescending to, and strong arming her into doing what she wants. It only features two females. I have no issue with a female protagonist, of mixed ethnicity (the inevitable standard in the far future), or even a lesbian as the main character. I accepted that in TLOU2 as a product of Ellie’s environment. The problem is when you combine all these traits, add an insufferable attitude, tattoos, and a shaved head, while stripping away any traits of femininity. It all ends up feeling forced and political. That said, the graphics, facial expressions, style, and game genre look incredible. We just don’t need another DEI/ESG butt-kissing game that undermines its own potential. Thanks

This video really encapsulated my feelings with the modern games industry. I was so disappointed when I saw the trailer for God of War. How could I possibly play that game when I'm not a ten foot tall 8,000 year old god? It immediately took me out of the game and I just had to put it down. Same thing for Spider Man. I'm Asian. Western games nowadays are ugly af hence I don't play them anymore. There is a reason why I have Arthur as my pfp not only the story was S tier but the character was beautiful af. Tomb Raider was also a female character. But that was not a problem. Similarly, Ciri being the main character of Witcher 4 is not a problem. As for other games, where they make some male looking female character being the main character, that is an entirely different thing.

@@malelonewolf80 for me that's exactly the problem .tomb raider was an refreshing "exception" at the time but right know it seem like they want to revert the genre .now the female need to be the savior and the hero .since the begining of time it was the male because male are the life you can sacrifice and you need good story to send men to die in war to sacrifies for their familes. now an ideologie want to clearly break that in pop culture and video game. dont get me wrong i am not misogin or incel or masculinst but these day that's go wayyy to far for a lot of men that why we're done

Ähm Jason is a male main character in GTA6, so you don't like male and female charactes maybe? Maybe stray or "little kitty, big city" are better games for you. Because there is no male of female characters, just cats. The witcher 3 ended with ciri becoming a witcher, so of course the witcher 4 will continue the story with ciri as a witcher.

@@reivaxazerto2478 There are enough games with male main characters: Indiana Jones, Black Myth Wukong, Spiderman, Astrobot (male robo), god of war, metaphor, ... I think you shouldn't focus to much on 10 % of the games. The female characters in GTA6, Witcher 4, horizon, control are very good designed. But you will find enough games with male main characters.

I’m tired of the whole 80s in the future genre. Why would people with space travel revert back to the 80s. It’s a cheap nostalgia play to the audience. It’s so over done. Marvel and DC are especially guilty of this.

Have to say I didn't know about this game, saw a drama video, got curious, watched the trailer, and am now shocked it's getting this kind of hatred. I think it looks nice and I like how the protag looks. There isn't much more to say so far so I feel people are so quick to hate without even waiting and giving it a chance.

I really don't get the problem. If this game is story driven (hey, it's Naughty Dog) i bet it wil be a cool and immersive story. I can't directly relate to Ellie from TLOU, but damn did get som feels goin an holy cow an interesting and new take on how to tell a story and give me a cool experience that stays an resonate. I love the thought of the nuance this could bring. I hear alot about this character not being grounded - how can you know. No matte how one look, one could be able to be grounded i that.

The backlash against this game is really perplexing to me. I think she looks pretty and badass. And you see her in the picture on the wall with hair, so I bet there's a story reason she shaved it down in this scene. I truly can't understand why people are upset. Geralt is ugly AF. Kratos is ugly AF. Why aren't people upset about that?

I want to play as this character. No, I don't have mental problems. But I find people who want every protagonist to be brutish athletic male, or the overly sexualized girl with full makeup and skimpy outfits, to be just as mentally disturbed as those who want every character to be either non-binary, gay, or Muslim. I will play this game because Druckmann knows how to craft beautiful worlds. Even if there's woke propaganda there, it wouldn't be as lame and 'in-your-face' as in Veilguard, so I'm fine with it. Honestly, after decades of gaming I'm sick and tired of cliched 'handsome' characters like Nathan Drake, it's great we have some ugly characters at last.

Society is upside down 😭😭 You have to understand that “out of the ordinary” is NOT the problem. Franchises that feature, for example, a non binary person that does not have any depth to it and is defined by its sexuality, is clearly just an “advertisement” for LGBT causes and probably will, understalably, not resonate with the audience and may be a bad product. But the main character of Intergalactic is not like this: This character is so full of life and personality! Just from whatching this trailer, I can understand that this character has a deep story to tell, and another one still to be told. Characters like Ellie from The Last of Us are gay, but that doesn’t make them bad characters, in fact, Ellie is one of the best characters ever created in the video game industry, and her sexuality is not even close to being a main point on her plot, its just who she is - much like Nathan Drake is a hetero, more conventional man. But that doesn’t contribute for the purpose of his character in the story of Uncharted. To end, I'd like to say that Naughty Dog thrives in story telling and character creation, and it is by this that they still seem to stand, and they continue to prove themselves with their titles. So please, society: try to see the true value in a product, it’s true worth, and not be manipulated by the opinion if the masses. They are often extremely deteriorating. Sincerely, a happy guy that loves video games :)

I don’t see why the main character has to reach out or be like me in anyway I’m certainly closer to Nathan Drake than I am to Lara Croft however I can still enjoy tomb Raider games and I’m certainly nothing like Crashbandicoot but very nice enjoyed those games too. So why the hell do I need to be similar to this protagonist in order to enjoy the game? I don’t think every character is meant to reach out and grab people that they’re similar to crash bandicoot certainly wasn’t done with that in mind.
