Nothing beats a modded PSP in terms of retro portable gaming. I can't even list here all the systems that it can emulate. A software modded PSP was 9 years ago what a smartphone is now.

I still think PSP is the best option for portable gaming even today. Tons of great games, as well as emulators for great systems like GBA or n64. The amount of amazing games you can play on it is mindblowing. You could do all of that on a smartphone, i guess....but, touchscreen controls....really?? Yea, i thought so. If you're gonna get only one system for gaming on the go, PSP is still the king, even against the likes of 3DS or Vita. I personally like the PSP Go the most, even though most people hate it. I just don't really care for physical copies of games, and i really like that design.

***** Yeah, 3DS is close 2nd. Man, if only nintendo would get all the original NDS games on the eShop.....it would be mindblowing! I still don't know why they haven't yet. They are already playable, they could just make some easy money by selling them digitally. I don't really like physical games for my handhelds (they are a hassle when traveling, and i am afraid of loosing a cartridge or something), plus original NDS games are pain in the ass to find.

If the psp would have had dual analogs on release it would have owned the handheld market.
@codo8584

Well the issue is that Nintendo handhelds exist, which have a much broader audience. I doubt a second stick would have impacted sales too much, like how the dual shock didn't impact PS1 sales when it was introduced

MetalJesusRocks I'm sure it influenced your opinion a little bit though. I had a PSP on launch, and only ended up getting 2 games for it, because I just thought they were too expensive along with the $250 PSP. Ended up trying to hack / torrent games for it, but had no idea how at the time, so my korean friend put a GBA emulator on it, and I played mostly GBA games like Pokemon and listened to music....haha xD (was still very neat that you could emulate other consoles on the PSP)

I was really excited both the PSP because I loved the PS2 so much! And no other handheld had the ability to create a similar experience like it. The GBA played SNES-like games...and the DS was less powerful when it came to 3D games, especially racing games... The PSP was great...and I LOVE the ability to output to a normal TV

I recently (and by recently, I mean a few months ago) got my first PSP. Found it on eBay, $60, pre-installed with custom firmware and a 4GB memory stick. I had to get it and I did. I never cared when it was relevant, then I played the PS1 version of Tales of Phantasia (which was Japan exclusive). Then I hunted one down and that's how I got my PSP 1000. ...R.I.P in schoolbag 3DS XL...

Compared to the sticks of the PS1 or PS2 controllers, the PSP stick is more difficult for precise movements. Play a PS2 Ace Combat game (AC4, keep it simple) and an Ace Combat game on the PSP and notice the differences. Now the controls work... well on the PSP, but just not as well as the PS2. Or play the PS1 classic Spyro the Dragon on the PSP and the imprecise controls become apparent on the timed demolition flying stages. It was much more easy to fly on the PS1. Still, as portables go, the PSP was fantastic. I just wish they made it with two sticks and four shoulder buttons (perhaps with external L3 & R3 buttons next to the sticks) in order to better imitate the PS2 controls and have better ports. The PS Vita has two sticks but hardly any good GAMES and that's what is killing it. Game developers have to invest nearly as much time in creating graphics for the Vita where they could just make their game for the home console and have a much wider audience than for a portable.

When I first saw th PSP, I was all set to buy a DS. While pricing them out, I saw a demo PSP and I was blown away. There were some setbacks or shortcomings for sure but I still have one and use it often. The extended life batteries were a bonus when they came out. I briefly owned a PS Vita for about two days, I returned it for a refund. The procedure of downloading games to the unit was awkward and time consuming. It wasn't the same as having a nice collection of PSP games on your shelf to play at will. It's a shame, the PS Vita looked promising at first glance.

I have the original 1000 ( import japanese model ), PSP 2000 ( purchased recently ) and PSP Go. The Go model is brilliant. I have custom firmware on it plus several emulators. Comes with built in 16gb of memory + support for sd cards. The PSP 2000 i recently got is awesome. Much faster response time on the screen compared to the original so much less ghosting.

Freddy Fazbear I do think he was reaching there! (Now the Game Gear was based on existing Hardware) But as for GB "revolutionising" portable gaming, I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Of the 4 relevant handheld consoles of that time period (GB, Lynx, TurboExpress & Game Gear) the GB really was the lowest common denominator. But where it got it right was in the pricing and by not offering an advanced system, battery life. I think even if Tetris (an already popular game on computer) and pokemon had never came out it would have dominated due to price and convenience.
@bloviatingmouse5114
@bloviatingmouse5114 10 жыл бұрын
daishi5571 price point and bettery life at that time were more important concerns, no one really cared about advanced technology they just wanted a good ''portable'' console
@daishi5571
@daishi5571 10 жыл бұрын
Freddy Fazbear Thats like saying no one wants a Ferrari. What Nintendo had was rather unique at the time and better than what had been previously available (Game & Watch etc...) Nintendo was top daddy dog in the console market at the time so the name nintendo resonated with anyone in the market for a gaming/portable console. Add a few decent games to the mix and what you have is a "decent enough system", Word of mouth spreads faster when a device is cheaper to pick up and lets face it we all support our "choices" Segas name wasn't as well known, Atari had already crapped the bed in the console market, and the the turbo what??? at the end of the day what did nintendo have that was better than all the others. Brand recognition, price, longer lasting batteries. So technically longer lasting batteries (only brought about by having the lowest common denominator) But I have been following the computer/gaming/tech industry since the beginning of the 80's and one thing I know is better does not equate to sales. I wonder what kind of systems (inc computers) we would be using today if "we" really had bought the better systems along the way (oh well I can only dream)

The PSP 3000 is and probably will always be my favorite handheld system. 1 Beautiful screen, very vivid colors; 2 Personalisation: Customizable background and icons on the xmb-menu; 3 Pro C2 Infinity firmware: permanent custom firmware for the PSP 3000, finally! CFW really opens up the PSP's potential: Implement a folder structure in your PSP, install a patch for Final Fantasy Tactics WOTL, play PS1 games Sony never released on PSN and of course, number 4:; 4 All the emulation (snes, genesis, nes, cps1&2, game boy etc) with perfect physical controls; 5 PS1 is the golden era of gaming for me and I have all my favorites on the PSP. Some are even better than I remember them, without the slowdown and black borders from the PAL days; 6 Video out to a CRT TV for full screen PS1 games, how cool is that?

The PSP will soon be ten years old (released in Japan on December 2004) which is nearly ancient for a video game console and I still play it every day for the big variety of favorite games. Hell, I even watch the movies! You can pick the UMD movies and games up for clearance prices. Just wish more PS1 games were ported for the North American PSP, like Einhander and Bushido Blade 2 (both were released in the PSN in Japan, but not here!) or that Wolfenstein 3D was ported to the PSP along with the PS3 (what's up with that?? Wolfenstein 3D would have been PERFECT for the PSP).

So i just bought a white PSP-2003. I got it for $25. It was a bit dirty, and since it was stored in the cold, the screen didnt work right. It also didn't have a battery or charging cable. Here's the thing. I cleaned it and aside from a few scratches and scuffs on the body, it looks pretty damn nice and clean. The screen also works fine now that it's warmed up. I ordered a battery on Amazon. And I already had a 5-in-1 usb cable for my GBA and DSs....but it also had a psp end on it. So Ive been playing it. It works perfect. It also came with a 32gb card and GTA VCS. AND it came preloaded with custom firmware. Let me remind you it was $25. I have a battery and card reader coming tomorrow. Gonna put some game isos and eboots on it asap. Can't wait. I had a PSP back in the day and it was my favorite thing ever. And I'm excited as hell to have this one and be able to play it again. Probably gonna have to buy an extra memory card for emulation eventually. But man. I remember playing my old psp before it got stolen. GTA, Locoroco, Patapon, Burnout, the ridiculous amount of PS1 games i played. Tomorrow is gonna be great. Just commented mostly to say that I'm still playing PSP in 2021/2022. And even when I didn't have a PSP, I was emulating it on my Xbox. Cant wait to try Midnight Club on a physical PSP.

I got a PSP 1000 at launch and loved it. Then when that got old I bought a 3000 and enjoyed it. The only reason I never gave up on the PSP was because of Monster Hunter games and MGS Peace Walker. I also REALLY loved MGA. I like my PSP a lot more then my DS. I will be buying the PSP2 and 3DS and I can see me enjoying the PSP2 more then the 3DS.

Have a 1,2,3 version didn't get the go or street . Underused on here, the port next to the headphones enables connection to a television or fm transmitter. Port on top for a camera or microphone. Internet access, possible to download from computer to memory card, with appropriate software. A lot better if than just games.

You nailed the difference between Nintendo and Sony's philosophy on portable systems. In the end, I don't think people in general want to pay premium price for their portable systems which just play games and Nintendo's philosophy is the right one. Nobody's gonna buy a psp for a camera or to play music. Maybe if it was presented in the right way, who knows. However, Sony did support the hell out of the psp. It seemed like it was hanging on for dear life but...it did fairly well.

My wife is playing the Ark of Napishtim and she is at the final boss, I will get back to you on that one. I want to get the Vita now that its dropped in price and has a bigger library, also Nintendo is releasing a new XL DS with some kind of funky dual thum stick thing. I will have to wait and see with N they love to sale ya stuff then make it better 4 months later LOL sucks but man they know how to drag out a system for cash.

Probably will be my first purchase yes, my whole family loves Y's that doesn't happen very often. You count on them to make a game that still has that old school feel to it. Zelda,Beyond good and evil, And Phyconaughts are contenders for most loved in my family.My kids were raised playing games its a family tradition LOL, we haven't bought a Wii U but when Zelda comes out my wife will actually agree to buy it:)

Preferred Ace Combat Joint Strike to ACXSoD. SOCOM FTB2 really impressed me. Much better graphically than the first one, linked and unlocked features with the PS2 SOCOM Combined Assault game, and showed that a shooter could work on the PSP's one-stick format. Best PSP game: Gladiator Begins (playing that steadily since 2010). Really wished the Vita would have been a PS2 portable! Should have had 4 shoulder buttons and the L3 & R3 buttons by the two sticks. And a protected flip-up screen.

I bought one of these at launch but only got 2 games for it, eventually I lost interest and even lost the system. I just found a new one (model 2000 with Darth Vader) at a thrift store for 20 bucks and now I feel like I am catching up! It's amazing there are so many great games for 10-15$.

Play Playstation 1 games via a Component cable on a CRT Screen, I´ve just finished Vagrant Story and man, it looks and sounds amazing, can´t wait to play more PSX games I missed back in the days, the only minor issue is that you will loose the rumble feature which was awesome in games like final fantasy 8

When I owned a psp I found that they were trying to emulate home gaming but came just short. I found, personally, that the games felt like gimped home versions. Making me just wanting to play it at home. Oh and also God of War felt exactly like the console which was awesome! Crisis core was sweet and Final Fantasy Dissidia is my favourite PSP game.
