The great Sophie Tucker! This is fantastic! One of the most prominent legends of show business. She was on the Sullivan show many times throughout the '50's and '60's and made one of her last appearances on a color episode (the only one I had seen previously in a "Best Of Sullivan" show). At least one entire episode was dedicated to her, and I've always wanted to see some of her appearances on the black and white episodes. Here she is singing her signature song "Some of These Days" which was a hit for her originally way back in 1910 or 1911. She ended off most of her performances by performing that great song. Thank you so much for posting this!

There were some performers you could tell Ed truly loved. Sophie was one of them.

every generation makes it off of the backs of those before them...Sophie Tucker was a legend...and good for Sullivan to treat her that way...when many forgot...

Who? Indeed, who? Can 'put it over' and fill the stage, with expression, chutzpah, raconteur, and absolute mastery of the lyric - timing of verse and body language? Any thespian or singer can learn much from these vaudevillians who 'played to the balcony' prior to amplified systems. And Sophie warmed those seats for decades - greatness, star quality embodied. Love ya Sohpie - and miss my big fat Mama.

Sophie Tucker was just incredible. She seems like she doesn’t feel too well here, but the talent shines through like no one else. Whether in 1925 or 1965, she was the best of the best.

@@Billy219 she may have been a great artist and a great role model, no argument here. But Sophie Tucker was a top headliner until the day she died, and her popularity was like no other entertainer of her day and her genre.

@@Billy219 imagine being so bored that you have to come on here to discredit a legendary performer in order to mention an obscure performer, who I’m sure was great in her own right, but who never had the staying power or the popularity that Sophie Tucker did. And imagine me being such an asshole that I actually take the time to answer you. God bless ya, kid. You must be a ball to all those around you.

Sophie lived a bit more than a year after this performance. Yes, she's not well but doing her best. She seems genuinely touched by the appreciation of Ed and the audience.

A true legend a performer par excellence.

Feel some compassion watching Sophie Tucker short on breath. Wikipedia says she died from lung cancer and kidney failure just a little over a year after this performance.

Vintage Americana - but amazing. She could sing beautifully and powerfully a times- but her ebullient personality, ambition, toughness and heart seemed to bo on overdrive throughout her life. I doubt there will ever be another Sophie Tucker- whereas you average politico, singer, bureaucrat, professional and the rest- you will always be the same- whatever the century.

Ted Shapiro was her accompanist since her vaudeville days, 1922 to 1964! And the one performer the Beatles most wanted to meet when they first came to the U.S.

Ed Sullivan was gentleman I heard. Joan Rivers and Diahann Carroll raved about him.
