I am a 34 years old guy that works with people who are in very bad shape. Drug addicts, dementia, very hard cases of autism... and I wear all of that relatively well. I learned how to deal with that stuff without being severely affected. Now, I always, ALWAYS, cry during the ending of the movie. When Moana joins with Tefiti I can't avoid it, I keep crying. There's something about the music that truly gets into my brain, more than any real stuff. This is one of the best movies of the modern Disney.

23:10 Yeah that needs some explaining. Māui was born prematurely, so Māuiʻs poor mother (Hina in Hawaiʻi, Taranga in Aotearoa/NZ) had no choice but to cast the baby in the sea to be buried (in the Maori version, Taranga cut off her topknot or "tikitiki" and wrapped the fetus in it before casting it out, which is where his name Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga). Māui, however, was very resilient even as an fetus and became fully formed in the ocean. In some versions, the gods found him, raised him, and taught him their secrets, then he was sent back to his mother and his four brothers (yes he had four brothers, and in some versions a sister as well) which is where his journey really started
@videohistory7222 жыл бұрын
The crab, Tomatoa is voiced by Jermaine Clements, lead singer of Flight of the Concords. Now considering this song is the only one that stands out from the rest because of its different sound, it would stand to reason that he wrote Shiny, right? Well, that's where it gets interesting. He didn't write it. He just performed it. Lin Manuel Miranda literally wrote a Flight of the Concords style song for this guy to perform.

I love this movie cause it’s so fun to find the stuff I’m familiar with, the culture shown combines a lot of different parts of Polynesia so only parts of it are things I’m familiar with from my own culture. Maui catching the sun is a story I was told a lot as a child as well as Maui pulling up the island I live on with his fish hook (I even got Hei Matau ((a traditional stylized fish hook pendant carved from bone)) as a 20th birthday gift). Also! As an aside, water over reefs is usually extra turbulent and the boat Moana tried to sail on first wasn’t equipped to deal with that, as someone who watches the difference between the water over a reef on a regular basis I just liked that little accuracy.

Even though it grossed far less than Zootopia (which also came out the same year) at the box office, it definitely left more of a cultural impact. 1:04 Te Fiti is actually inspired by several Polynesian deities of the earth, fertility, life and motherhood, including Papahānaumoku ( "Papa birther of islands") and Haumea from Hawaiʻi and Papatuanuku from Aotearoa (New Zealand) Simply put, theyʻre all considered the "Earth Mother" in their respective creation stories, being married to their respective "Sky Father"s in Wākea (Hawaiʻi) and Rangi-nui (Aotearoa) to which they subsequently birth the gods, land, and people. Each of their stories are very long and convoluted so Iʻll spare you with the details (but lmk if anyoneʻs interested)

@kupaakaleo1372 жыл бұрын
@@jlwolf29 Iʻll start with the Hawaiian stories, since, as a native Hawaiian, Iʻm more familiar with those versions. After the universe was created, there was the earth mother Papahānaumoku (some versions, itʻs Haumea that births the islands since thereʻs a lot of similarities between the two beings) and the sky father Wākea ("expansive space"). Together, they copulated and gave birth to the islands of Hawaiʻi and Maui, with the afterbirth floating into the ocean and becoming the island of Kahoʻolawe. After a time, Haumea traveled back to Kahiki/Tahiti, the origin of the gods & people. During this time, Wākea took another woman, the beautiful Hina, to which they gave birth to the island of Molokaʻi. Wākea also took the lady Kaʻula, with whom he had the island of Lānaʻi with. A little birdie eventually told Papa of Wākeaʻs infidelity and she traveled back to her home. Mad with jealousy, Papa took the handsome Lua and gave birth to the island of Oʻahu. Eventually seeing his error, Wākea and Papa reconciled and gave birth to the chiefly island of Kauaʻi as well as the island of Niʻihau and the atolls of Lehua, Kaʻula and Nīhoa. And thus, the islands were born. Sometime later, the couple finally birthed a daughter: Kahoʻohōkūkalani (roughly translating to "one who places stars in the heavens" who I will refer to as "Hōkū" for simplicity) She quickly grew in beauty, which caught the attention and desire of Wākea. Unwilling to anger his wife once more, but unable to cast aside his temptation for Hōkū, Wākea sought advice from his kahuna (expert, priest, wiseman, etc.) to which he devised of the kapu system: a system that would dictate the lives of people for generations. The kapu system forbids men and women from eating together, that men and women would move into separate gendered houses during certain periods (especially during womenʻs time of the month), and that women were not allowed to cook or eat certain foods, but in exchange only men would be used as sacrifices to the gods (among many other things) Wākea then proposed this new kapu system to Papa, which she agreed to. During Papaʻs period to move into the womenʻs quarters, Wākea went to Hōkū and had a child with her: Hāloanakalaukapalili ("Hāloa of the shivering leaves") Unfortunately, the baby was born prematurely, so Wākea and Hōkū buried him on the Eastern side of their house. In some versions, Hōkū cried over the babyʻs grave so often that her tears flooded the ground, so much so that the little mound sprouted the first kalo/taro plant, the most prominent and sacred crop in Hawaiian diet and culture. Soon after, Hōkū birthed another child with Wākea: Hāloa ("the long breath" named after his older brother) the first Hawaiian man. Itʻs believed the relationship between people and kalo is meant to reflect that of sibling relationships: as people continue to take care of the kalo, the kalo continues to feed the people; just as the younger sibling takes care of the older sibling, while the older sibling feeds the younger sibling Then thereʻs the stories of Haumea, who is mainly known as the mother (together with either the sun god Kānehoalani ("Kāne that ignites the heavens") or the war god Kūwahailo ("maggot-mouthed Kū")) of the goddess Pele and her many siblings. Itʻs believed that when Haumea birthed her many children, they all emerged out of a different part of Haumeaʻs body. The oldest was the great shark god Kamohoaliʻi ("the chiefly champion") who was born at the top of Haumeaʻs head. Then was the lightning god Kauilanuimakaʻehaikalani ("the great lightning of the pain in the heavens" or "the great lightning of the pained eyes of the heavens") born from Haumeaʻs eye. Then came Kānehekili, god of thunder, emerging from Haumeaʻs mouth. Then one was born from her ear, one from her palm, one from her hand, one from her fingers, until eventually out of Haumeaʻs breast was born Nāmakaokahaʻi ("the eyes of Kahaʻi") the goddess of the sea and water, and then from Haumeaʻs thigh was born Pelehōnuamea ("Lava of the sacred earth") known simply as Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes. The two sisters are famous for their constant feuds that result in new land being formed every day. Haumea then gave birth to Kapōʻulakīnaʻu ("the red night flecked with black spots"), goddess of hula, fertility and the practices of life and death, from the knees/toes. Then after many daughters named Hiʻiaka being born, Haumeaʻs final child was the goddess Hiʻiakaikapoliopele ("Hiʻiaka in the bosom of Pele") born how most women birth children, but with the baby being born within an egg, to which Haumea entrusted to Pele for her to nurture. I could go further in to either Haumeaʻs story, the story of Pele and Nāmaka, or the story of Hiʻiakaʻs journey, but I feel like thereʻs already a lot of info here. lmk if anyone wants more

@@jlwolf29 Oh I forgot to go over the Māori story of Papatūānuku (which I will try to go over "briefly" as Iʻm not entirely familiar with the culture, so any and all Māori cousins are more than welcome to correct me or elaborate) In the beginning, there was Papatūānuku, the earth mother, and her beloved Rangi-nui, the sky father. So intense was their love that their children and all of their creation had to live between their everlasting embrace, locked in eternal darkness. Wanting to bring light to the world, their children, the atua (the gods), tried to separate their parentsʻ. Many tried and failed until Tāne-mahuta, atua of birds and the forest, raised his feet towards the sky and pushed up on Rangi-nui against Papatūānukuʻs earth, growing and changing into the tallest tree in the forest. Tāne-mahuta had successfully separated the sky and the earth; but in the process, their youngest brother, Rūaumoko atua of volcanoes, was still feeding from their mother when she was turned over, becoming part of the underworld. Rūaumokoʻs movement became the earthquakes and kept his lonely mother warm with his lava. And although Tāne-mahuta brought light to the world with his actions, not all of his siblings approved: Tāwhirimātea, atua of wind and weather, went up to keep his father company and sends his children (the winds, clouds, storms, lightning and thunder) to exact vengeance for his parentsʻ division. Because of this, his siblings hide away from the weather: Rongo-mātane, atua of cultivated foods, hides below the earth within sweet potatoes and other farmed plants; Haumia-tiketike, atua of uncultivated foods, hid below the forest soil within his children the fern roots; Tangaroa, atua of the sea, lives within the waters below with his many aquatic children. But much like Tāwhirimātea, the atua of war and people, Tū-matauenga, did not approve of his parents separation as well and taught his children how to harvest his brothers from their hiding places by use of nets, traps and hoes; even though Tū is strong enough to stand up to his lofty brother. Now that Papa and Rangi are separated forever more, they both show their sadness for one another with tears of mist that rise to the skies and rain that falls to the earth respectively

I'd say that to me, this film is about on par with Frozen for opposing reasons. Frozen had a great if somewhat formulaic story where the songs are either forgettable or sometimes annoying in the case of Let It Go (which was due to it being overplayed be so many people but still) Meanwhile Moana's story was kind of hit and miss leaving me with some unanswered questions but the songs are so catchy and full of passion in their delivery (and this is coming from a guy who usually doesn't really like musicals lol) Both are flawed, but still really great films.
@ma.20892 жыл бұрын
Why did u find it hit or miss? I personally found it’s exploration of trauma and identity so interesting. The fact Moana’s answer isn’t abandoning her family (as most western stories tend to be) but about marrying both “sides” of her. That and we get, for the first time, attempted child murder/actual abusive biological parents in a Disney movie. I feel like some things are left unexplained but most of these things are inferred and can be realized just by thinking about what the story is about. The rest are not a big deal at all, tho if they wanted they could explore it in the Disney+ show they’re making. Moana’s story is contradictory to Frozen’s. So I totally get preferring one and not the other. I’m the same, I think Frozen’s got one of the worst Disney stories, but I def disagree about those songs. I think they’re pretty good, for the most part

So Māui can shapeshift (mostly, if not only, as a rooster or other kind of bird) without the need of his fishhook In fact, this version of Māui is not as well liked by a lot of Polynesians who grew up with Māuiʻs stories, as Māui is most often depicted as a cunning teenager-young adult with great supernatural abilities. I even had a college professor who hates this movie because she is actually a descendant of Māui and Disney made him into (in her words) "a big buffoon"

When I first watched this movie, the ending scene made me think “why would she put a shell?! What about future chiefs?” Well…. Then I watched it again and actually got it (I’m slow) they’re leaving the island and not going back, of course that means that tradition is over. 🤷♂️

Sadly, I've seen the actual Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson do the pec flex thing that Maui did. No offense to Dwyane Johnson, but I think Maui did it better.

1:52 Yeah "demon" is more metaphorical here, and the term demigod in this sense is not really what youʻre probably thinking. Māui is called a demigod but in reality heʻs not an actual child of a god (in most versions). In Hawaiian belief, heʻs considered a kūpua, which is something OSP calls "people++" but mostly it refers to shapeshifters and "earthly" beings with supernatural powers that arenʻt considered ʻakua (deities, spirits, etc.) though Iʻm not sure how other Polynesian cultures consider him

Sophie you would love to watch the Star Wars movies. In my opinion, I start off with A new hope (1977), The empire strikes back (1980), The return of Jedi (1983). You will enjoy the original trilogy. With the prequel and sequel trilogies, they are disliked or hated. Jar jar banks was the hated character in the prequels. The phantom menace (1999), Attack of the clones (2002), Revenge of the Sith (2005).
