Johnny was always saying he was a pragmatist, but he actually wasn’t. Initially he seemed like he was, but as time went by it was revealed he wasn’t. Carmine Sr. and even Carmine Jr. we’re way more pragmatic by nature and practice. Johnny was actually very high strung, emotional and insecure, especially when he became Boss.
@Howard.Stern.5 жыл бұрын
Johnny deliberately set up Carmine to shut down the construction projects to set him up for being hit. Then tried to expose Tony for hitting a boss to take the heat for Carmine. Johnny without question wanted to be boss in NY and fold NJ into his family. Tony long suspected Johnny was infiltrating his crew. "Sticking his beak in". And Johnny got both Ralph and Paulie as spies without any effort at all. But the FBI were working on Johnny since season one. They even tell Junior they'd let him walk if he gave up Johnny Sacrimoni. Just like agent Harris saves Tony from Phil. The FBI basically saves Tony from going to war with Johnny by throwing Johnny in jail like Junior was.
@byrongammonbyrongammon99375 жыл бұрын
@@Howard.Stern. .......To an extent I agree with your assessment. But Tony Soprano did his part to fan the flames once Carmine Sr. past away. Scammers, schemers....look for opportunities to profit. Conflict provides plenty of opportunity. The longer the flames are fanned.......the more exposure the combatants are subjected to by the opportunists. Tony vs Ralph used by Sack to ingratiate himself with Ralph and get him installed on the Esplanade where he was about set up shop. Tony refused to give Ralph a piece of the casino because he didn't want him getting close to Johnny Sack. Sack exploited Tony's neglect and marginalization of Paulie to his advantage to extract information pertaining to Tony's financial affairs and ultimately demanding an equity share in Tony's HUD business. But Sack's courting of Ralph bit him in the ass when he insulted his wife. Tony's meddling in Lupertazzi internal affairs got Angelo unfairly murdered which engendered Tony Blundetto's act of retribution that ultimately backed Tony Soprano into a corner that he was constantly fighting out of since his main rival, Phil, ended up becoming boss. Moves, counter moves, adjustments, and the messes created makes for a fertile landscape of conflict for the writings to sculpt storylines.

The thing that i appreciate most in this conversation between Tony and Johnny is their style and elegance (while also maintaining a mutual respect and a toughness in their voice). See how after Johnny Sack enters Tony's car there is about a ten second period of silence in which both of them act natural to try to put the other in an awkward position and persuade him to speak first. Tony, of course gives in to this waiting game because he is more impulsive, but the conversation remains subtle.

This scene displays one of the keys to the success of the Sopranos. Subtext. When a character says exactly what they mean they become flat, one dimensional, and boring. When they say other than what they mean they become fascinating, multi-dimensional, entertaining.

@cekinxxx Esplonade. It's a multi-million dollar construction project going on for the renovation of the Neward waterfronts. Naturally this would belong to Tony, however New York has a hold on it as well so they share the profits. John wants Carmine (his boss) whacked cuz currently he and tony are arguing over the percentage of the profits, hence a work stoppage. John is being effected the most by this because the majority of his money comes from construction. If he kills Carmine, back to work.

Calm, calculated and knows how to get a job done without having things point back to him. If someone disrespected Tony I can see Tony killing them himself. If someone disrespected Johnny, he wouldn’t get mad or yell. He would just look at one his of guys and give them a nod. Then smile at the person who disrespected him and walk away. @AlanHope20133 жыл бұрын
The Wire was supposed to be more cinéma verité, more of a documentary field, as suits a work devised by a former newspaper reporter. The Sopranos is more related to a Renaissance tragedy in many acts, like a history of the Borgias or something. It needs to be rather lush and director-y, all cunning camera angles, tracking shots and saturated colours. Darling.

@goldensperm71822 жыл бұрын
@@troll-fx2zc well, you gotta watch what happened prior first to better understand. Basically, there was an disagreement between Tony and Carmine with the revenue share for the esplanade, where Tony, John, and Carmine earning a lot of cash. Because of this disagreement, Carmine decided to shut down the esplanade. Of course, it affected them all, and every time it's close, they're losing a lot of cash. Especially John since he was getting a major portion of his earnings there. Like that's his primary source of major income. Carmine was also losing money by closing it, but he also had other means to earn a lot of cash as opposed to Tony and John. And Tony is a prideful man and would just let that be, but John can't let that happen cus he is losing a lot of money. If you listened to the video, John also mentioned that Carmine caused him a lot of money just cause of his decisions, and closing the esplanade made John "Okay, fck this. I'm tired of his bullsht, I want him whacked". He didn't directly implied it in the video, but when he said "Carmine is healthy, Thank God!" He actually mean that he wants him dead as he was just being sarcastic. Also the incident with the joke about his wife when Carmine decided not to let John kill Ralphie, that left a bitter taste for him. The closing of esplanade and Carmine not allowing John to kill Ralphie were his main reasons to want him dead.

In this scene Johnny tells Tony that life for both of them would be much easier without Carmine around, and he basically gives Tony the green light to clip Carmine, also guaranteeing that he will not interfere afterwords. To this realization, Tony replies with a quiet "Holy Shit" only after Johnny had left his car.

Then it wouldn’t be The Sopranos
@DB-fn3fz4 жыл бұрын
@@scifinerd17 I just mean, I found the therapist-Tony interaction to be very allegorical but also a total debacle. The complexivity of the report between NY and NJ was a testatory of a grandeur that even outshone Versales, and deserved a more comprehensable plot. I am reminded of a partical example: Tony found himself at the precipice of a cross roads where he was conjugated to decide between going to war verses facultating peace. He was cognified that historically, historical consequestors have resulted from war, and that going to war with New York would have negatory impacts that would effect their respective bottom lines. Alltheless he epitomized that a gallon of blood is worth more than a gallon of gold, he wasn't of capacitance to bury the ratchet because Phil's brother had been expired and he had become the boss of NY, and this caused the show to exterminate in a manure much faster than it was destinated to, in my humile opinion. Tony seeing a psychotrist made him look like a bit of a posùer to NY and he had to live with that stigmata, but he was also a pragmattist and didn't meritate to be put under the telescope of a psycholotrist for the majority of the series. The writers tailored the show to the specificities of his psyche instead of letting the audience collect the dots by themselves. This I found a bit presentuous.

that started because Angelo asked Tony B to kill Joey Peeps, a member of Johnny's side of the conflict. Angelo was killed by Phil and Bill Leotardo and then Tony B tried to kill them both in retaliation. Tony Soprano is very helpless here, Blundetto is not a member of his crew but his cousin and was acting as a free agent.
