First of all, I'm loving this series. For me, this is probably my favourite series so far. Second, some questions: if you compare this to the Ettins, which technique do you prefer for the skin, the wetblending or this highlighting? And why? And do you still varnish the miniatures, and if you do, do you use the airbrush for it? Thanks, and keep it up!
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Anneke! That's a really great question RE the Ettins! I actually deliberated about whether to go the wet blending route or not, and if I was just painting for myself, I'd happily go with either approach (the wet-blending approach is certainly quicker, if slightly less refined) and my decision really came down to serving the pedagogical "flow" of the series in that I felt covering the topic of highlighting would be more useful to newer painters, especially given how useful it will be when covering the heroes, whereas wet blending is a little more situational (large monsters, textured surfaces etc). Regarding the varnish question; yes I just give the mini a blast with Testors Dullcote. :)

Really fantastic paintwork. I really think your use of successive layers of colours and glazes are really effective. I'm assuming you wouldn't paint each miniature this way for tabletop play. Omg such a precise and informative video. I dont own this game but only trying to learn new techniques to become a better painter. One simple question, why is everyone talking about a wet pallet (wich i now use because of that) when you seem to make way better mixing and control the colors with a normal one. Im confused in switching back to the normal pallet! Great video!
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Christopher! Regarding the use of a wet palette; I often use on myself (as you'll see in some of my other videos) but don't like to send out the message that you have to use one in order to paint well. They do offer benefits (keeping the paint wet for longer, as well as encouraging a freer approach to mixing) but do require more effort to set up and maintain. In the end it's entirely up to you to choose if or when to use one, and don't let anyone tell you there's one way to do anything in this hobby! :)
@christopherbreton53685 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks a lot for the reply! Ill sure be testing it out because the mixing looked more simple this way! Last question, what brand of brushes do you use? The fibres look amasingly soft and the tip is so pointy, they look awesome.

@hekje123455 жыл бұрын
How many different hues did you use for the hammerhead in the basecolor step? 3? And just start with dark and add more white? And how many stages of highlights of the skin? Also will you do 1 hero per video? I'd like it, even if it would take a little more time for the 6 videos to be out, I don't mind. Amazing work on the hill troll, really love this one. This series is really a course and now we get to the advanced stuff (which as you say is optional, but why wouldn't we try it!)
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! OK - for the hammer I used around 3-4 main tones; yes - just I just mixed black to white to get a quick gradient, then mixed in some brown/green to add some interest (brown more in the shadows and green in the lighter end). For the skin, it looks like I ended up applying around 7-8 stages of highlight. Regarding the heroes, I've not yet decided, but if I have two heroes that use almost exactly the same colours then I think it would make sense to cover them in a single video, otherwise I will of course give them an episode each. :)
@fly_it38594 жыл бұрын
Hi Sorasto, I was just wondering, if I am sure to do the highlights, would it make more sende to the shading as a last step and make the "finishing" before the shading?

Hey Mate, I just started painting the troll as well, next step would be the highlights. Tbh I'm having some trouble understanding exactly how to paint them on, more accurately where. ;-) Do you have any concept where to paint them on besides the imagination of where the sun would hit? Also, is every lighter step painted on on the exact same areas, just smaller? Sorry if those are dumb questions, but highlighting like that is a thing hard to grasp for me. ;-)
@Sorastro3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sascha! There are no dumb questions my friend! So yes, here I was just imaging how the light would fall on the volumes from a roughly overhead direction (you could shine a light from above the mini and look at how the light falls - and even take a pic on your phone or something to give you some reference). Regarding the highlights, you've got the idea! Just get lighter and lighter, and smaller and smaller... :)

Hi Apoc! They're from "Buy the Same Token": m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2517137994987352&id=941329685901532 (There's also a link to their store at the bottom of the video description) 😀

Camoshade didn’t come with my shade set. Could I get away with biel tan green?
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Hi Blake! Sure - you can use whatever you like really; if you add Biel Tan Green I might a smaller amount however as it's a bit more of an intense green :)

Do you know where I can get a smaller brush? Mine are thin but nearly thin enough, also do you know what should shades I should get, because they are quite expensive...
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Hi! There's a link in the video description to where I buy my brushes. Regarding the Shades, if you were to buy just one I'd suggest Agrax Earthshade, and if you can stretch to it I'd also suggest getting some Lahmian Medium to control the intensity of the Shade, but also to make it last longer! :)

@@Sorastro I've also heard nuln oil is... I don't know the bees cup of tea? I don't know... Also what exactly does lamhian medium do?
@jordanesmith1115 жыл бұрын
Holy Crusader, I’m not Sorastro but I can try to answer. Lahmian Medium is, I believe, a paint medium. Which is to say that it’s basically paint, without any pigment. This means that you can use it to thin down other paints and washes, without changing the viscosity, finish, etc. Nuln Oil is a black wash, while Agrax has a mix of black and brown shades to it. Nuln Oil can be used in many of the same places that Agrax can, but since it lacks the brown tones Nuln Oil is going to look less cohesive over surfaces like leather and skin.

Thanks Jordan! Totally agree - I find Lahmian Medium is just a great way to thin the Shades down whilst maintaining their nice properties :)

@@Sorastro 1.Does it have the consistency of shades? 2. Does it work on regular base/layer/drybrush coats? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions :/

Hey Sorastro, nice job again. :) Did you plan painting minis from A Song of Ice and Fire TMG?
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Thorben! No, I'm afraid I don't currently have plans to cover ASOIAF, but you could certainly use a lot of the same techniques etc for them that I've demonstrated in this series.. :)

Not sure what the point of the xenathal highlighting undercoat was on this figure. :)
@Sorastro5 жыл бұрын
Hi Apoc! Well, apart from anything else, it means that anyone wanting to paint it quickly has a nice easy stopping point (after the shade) - especially if they follow my suggestion of thinning the base tone down even further than I did. 😀

I am most likely going to become a Patron. I have Kingdom Death Monster, Descent Journeys in the Dark, Imperial Assault, MIddara, and Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon which will be released later this year to paint. Since Sorastro has a large number of these with excellent painting guides If I want to learn to paint where is the best place to jump in. Which figures are the least complex to paint

Thanks a lot David! I've also backed Tainted Grail and will most likely be producing some PDF guides for it later this year :)
