After watching several of your vids, 3 things became clear to me: 1) I suck at painting 2) I struggle to get my paint the right consistency--I know it when I get it right, but I can't repeat it all the time; 3) I don't use anywhere near the amount of paint you do, so maybe that's part of the problem with #2 4) I suck at painting lol. Yeah, I know I said 3 things, but that one needs repeating :). Love it. My only negative is I feel like using a mix of 3 or 4 colors just to highlight the metal is diminishing returns. There’s 100 shades of metallic out there, I can’t imagine this mix is worth the squeeze. But. That’s a minor complaint. Amazing either way.

Thanks a lot Nick! I generally try to build in techniques into my videos but for eyes you've just gotta keep those wrists resting on the surface and the hands locked in place. Also - getting the consistency right helps too - not too thick nor too thin. :)

Very fine work, dear Sorastro. It's impressive that it takes around 7 layers (if I count correctly) on most "important" areas to get the effect you want - in fact maybe one more on the cloak, I believe. When I saw the way you painted the rivets of the studded armor, I just thought "oh snap". For the "tabbert" (@21:50), I'm surprised you didn't paint the front upper part's recess "just a bit" to get that nice color tone back. It feels very "dark" since I think we're actually seeing the initial base there - or are we? Also, nice work figuring out the rope from which the bundle hangs. I'm going to paint my Clovis too. I'm thinking of a green cape (because I use green markers for this character), but then purple indicates royalty more steadily... Hmm... Thinking... Why are there so many decisions to take? :-)

+Yan Hey Thanks a lot Yan Hey! I see the dark bit you're referring to; I left that dark as I read that as being dark belt strap rather than part of the tabard. You could of course paint it however you like :)

Hmm... Good point, it could be that too. I still have a hard time figuring out how our friend Clovis dresses. He's probably got some "underwear" (whatever we called these in middle age - probably looking more like modern pyjamas), then on top would be the padded armor and armor leggings, on top the tabard (thanks for fixing my spelling there), then on top the studded armor, then the cape. (I think it would have to be in that order if the tabard covers upper and lower bodies. Either that or it's a simple piece of front cloth wrapped around the belt, to offer more front covering - nah, that wouldn't make any sense, would it?) Either way, Clovis was probably ready to head out into a windy, cold city!

Thanks a lot John! I do the occasional "behind-scenes" video on Patreon but I think a comprehensive look at the whole process would necessitate an entire series just on its own! My philosophy is simply to create the kind of video I myself would want to watch, so I teach myself how to use the editing programmes (Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom, iZotope RX 5 etc.) to enable me to achieve that goal. Grats on the new camera by the way! I just ordered a new one too - can't wait to give it a spin :)

Awesome work mate. Just recently subscribed after looking for some general guidance on painting minis for D&D. I painted my first one over the weekend after watching this. It's miles away from your standard but I definitely applied a lot of your techniques where I could. Ive got a few questions though. Is there a reason why you spray the miniature with the varnish before you add the blood? I've painted a barbarian character and am considering adding blood to it but don't know whether I need to varnish first or not. Secondly, although on a similar topic, is there a particular varnish you would recommend? I tried searching for the one in you used in this video but can only find it for import from mainland Europe. The uk version seems different. Would you recommend any alternatives or will any matt varnish work? Thanks for your help and keep up the great work! 👍🏻

+Nick Jenkins Hi Nick! Thanks for the kind words! The only reason I applied the matte varnish before adding the blood was just to preserve the gloss finish of the blood. You could achieve the same result by brushing on some gloss varnish locally to the bloody areas of course. If you're in the UK you can get hold of the Testor's Dullcote in a couple of places although stock does come and go.. here's a pack of three from a reliable seller I sometime use on eBay: r.ebay.com/Fag6sH It really is my favourite matte varnish (although it is rather smelly). :)

+RobertSE6 Thanks Robert! It depends.. I usually place my minis in front of a fan to speed up the drying time, but it usually only takes a few minutes. It's also usually pretty easy to see when it's dry too; just check the crevices carefully to check they're properly dry. :)

Hi Soranto, I love your work and I wonder if you could give me some tips? I have been painting super dungeon explore: forgotten king and while I do notice improvement I still have some problems with. 1:keeping a nice point on the brushes while painting. I use luke warm water with special soap to clean and store them facing down with the protective tubes on them. 2: how do I know I have my paint thinned enough? I use a wet pallet and it's either to thick losing the details or to thin so I don't have full control. any other tips are always appreciated!

Hi Rilain! 1) All I can suggest is after loading your brush with paint, drag it across some paper or something, but give it a little twist as you do so to help it form a nice point. 2) The thickness you want will depend greatly on what you're doing (base coating, glazing etc..). I'm not sure what to suggest to help you get the consistency you want however - just trial and error?

I like the idea of Zenithal priming and the brown wash is interesting but I am struggling to see it show through anywhere. I have tried Zenithal priming on some larger figures but I cant seem to tell the difference. With the brown wash here it looks like it just gets painted over and I don't see how it makes a different result than just using the paint directly. And advice on how to see the benefit of these techniques or where to look to see what a mini would look like with and without these techniques? Thanks for the great videos as always

Hi Chris! The extent to which a zentihal prime shows through in the final product does vary quite a bit, and you're right - the effect here is negligible. However, the prime and shade still helps in that it gives us nice dark recesses which means we don't have to get the brush into every tiny nook; we essentially already have some effective dark lining. Whereas if I'd primed in white I'd have to be a lot more thorough and careful when applying the base colours. Yet the lighter tones given by the zenithal prime make it much easier to achieve the lighter base colours (compared to say painting over a black prime). So in this case, even if the zenithal pre-shade doesn't much show in the final product, it still makes it easier for use to achieve the desired level of contrast :)

+Alexandra Condijts Hi Alexandra! I usually include details of which brushes I'm using in the respective video descriptions (in this case a Rosemary and Co Series 33 size 2). When I'm choosing my colours I simply do my best to match the character art. I sometimes have to play around a fair bit with various combinations until I arrive at my final recipe , and for challenging miniatures I sometimes buy a second set of the game to practice on (like I do for Blood Rage). :)

After priming, base coats, shade, and highlights, my miniature ends up with a kind of chunky finish to it. All I would say is don't let anyone tell you there's a "right way" to do anything: wet palette, dry palette, clean palette, messy palette... the only right way is the way that works for you. :)

I can warn you: that mix for the metal is going to read very blue. I don’t think that ratio is correct. You probably should use more like 3:1:1 Leadbelcher:Black:Deep Sea Blue.
