My Trip through the Sad History of Japan's Hidden Christian

In the early 17th century, the religious ban was issued in Japan. However, some people secretly kept their faith. They are called “Kakure Kirishitan” which means "Hidden Christians". Their heritage sites are mainly in Nagasaki and Kumamoto (Amakusa).
I took a trip to Nagasaki to trace their history. I am glad I did. I encountered many more beautiful things than expected.

Some travel tips
Sorry. Kuroshima Island, which I visited in this video, is not recommended for those who don't speak Japanese. It's not very accessible, so quite difficult to travel to.
Instead, I strongly recommend going to Fukue Island. It also has a very deep history of hidden Christian. You can get there by plane from Fukuoka as well as by ferry from Nagasaki City, and there are some hotel options. Fukue island is part of an archipelago called the Goto Islands, so you can also visit the other islands.
Nagasaki Prefecture is full of things to see and do!

I have 2 things to tell you. I am trying to write this as unemotionally as possible. I got married last month. It hasn't been that long since I met her, so I didn't expect to get married this year, but that's life (in a good way)! No kid yet, but with any luck, next year, or in 2025 maybe? The 2nd announcement is that this will probably be my last video. My life is no longer just mine. I will have to spend my time for my family, that would make me happy. I know there are people who have families and still do KZbin or something, but I am not that talented. I said "this will probably be my last video" because there is no 100% in life. So probably, but most likely. There were a few times when I wanted to quit. For the first few months, no one really watched my videos. I wondered what was the point of doing this while shooting and editing. Even after I got many subscribers, it wasn't all good. I received mean comments, and sometimes racist comments about Japanese people. But more than that, your positive feedbacks encouraged me. Originally, I started this with the casual intention of doing it just only during the pandemic. I never thought I would continue this long. Thank you all. I especially want to thank those who supported me on Patreon and those who tipped me here. I still can't believe that people so far away from Japan are paying for something I created. I also want to thank those who subscribed in the very early stage. Like I said, I remember well that for the first few months my videos were not really watched by anyone. I was encouraged so much by comments from those who subscribed such channel. I also know that there are types of people in this world who never comment but secretly support someone very enthusiastically. Thanks to you as well. Well, those who are watching my video for the first time right now may be a little confused. I will thank you too if you take a weekend to watch all my videos and subscribe. Just kidding. Thanks for watching (my fans have endured these kinds of boring jokes for years). Maybe what I want to tell you most is not that I got married or that this is the last. It is that I am truly grateful to you guys. Thank you so much.

That is a good news. What a wondeful journey, My Friend. I pray you will have more wonderful live with your Wife and Kids ☦️ You have talent, My Friend. You can enjoy simple things in life, that means you can find the Beauty and Richness in simple things [I know since i have watched many of your videos]. That is truly remarkable because we lived in modern society and yet i found very few people that can do it. You are truly living in the moment, Bro. Like the legend said that, "Right before we die, Our lives will flashing before our eyes" So, here is my message for you: I hope even if you quit KZbin. Let your camera lenses becomes your own eyes. Let your digital memories becomes your own brain. Let your own camera [which is your own body] record every single happiness with your Family. So, when the time comes, if the Legend is true. That will be the most Amazing Vlog you will ever made to God. And you are the only one who can enjoy that Vlog. Let God see your meaningful live, My Brother. That's all i gotta say, Thank You, Brother. Your videos are like my friend during pandemic.

Congratulations Ryo! It's sad that this is your last video but I, as a subscriber for the past few years, am happy you have found a wife and will have a family! I wish you the best of luck on your journey through life! If anything, you could possibly re-upload some of your older deleted videos, I throughly enjoyed watching them late at night and changing my routine to a similar pattern you did.

Thanks of all Ryo. I'm from Italy and I've enjoyed every of your touching videos since the "Sorekara Melancholy" times. I've always thought that you are exceptionally talented in storytelling. I've appreciated your attention for the small things, the perfect chilling music, your intimate filming style, your thoughts shared in the subtitles and your funny jokes. Your videos even helped me during some tough days. Not gonna lie, I'll be missing your videos so much 😭 I wish you all the best with your new life chapter! And I will be here again if you eventually decide to return ❤

Reading your announcement feels like when I had to lose my best friend because of his marriage choice. It's very sad, but on the other hand, I am very happy that you have finally found and embarked on one of the stages toward happiness. Certainly, I will lose contact with someone I thought I would grow old with. It can be challenging since we choose a life where people come and go all the time. However, I've learned to live with the fact that not everyone is going to stay forever. I am accepting what comes and allowing it to leave when it's time. Dear Ryo, thank you for creating and sharing all the beautifully crafted cinematography videos. Each one has left a profound impact on my life, especially during the challenges of the pandemic. Your choice of emotionally stirring background sounds has made each memory unforgettable. Stay steadfast in your life choices; I will always support you and eagerly await your return as a subscriber. Till then, keep healthy and always happy 🤍

Congratulations Ryo! I rarely comment on any videos and I'm commenting to let you know that your videos were therapy to me, they still are. I have somekind of locomotive disability since birth. So, I don't really know how walking feels like and never really explored the world. You're style of volgging was unique since they were silent vlogs. I absoutely loved them, as it felt like I was in that place. I discovered your channel maybe around the fall of 2021 and binged them all (the old vlogs too which are unforuntely unavailable now). I still watch your videos. I watched this very video after a week you published it and then I read the pinned comment. I'm happy for you and I'm sad too. This is the second time I'm watching this and I thought I should comment. Stay healthy.

Congratulations on your marriage!! I know this kinda late because i just remembered you haven't uploaded any videos lately, and i just happened to look at the comment section this time. But anyways surely i will miss ur videos, but the good thing is one of my favourite go-to youtuber is getting married. I've read some of the comments and most of them did a very nice job at congratulating, but i think i cant do the same like them because im just suck at it. But what im hoping is hopefully you guys have a wonderful life ahead. Married lifes not going to go smoothly but hold on to ur partner and said to her "We'll get through this no matter what." or something like that yknow what i mean. again, anyway, hopefully you guys can enjoy this life together and forever and have a wonderful, wonderful! Time together. also thank you fo the videos you had made. They really accompanied me when im eating foods and stuff theyre really nice and calming to watch! Again congratulations Ryo-san! (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)

First of all, congratulations on your wedding and I hope you have a happy marriage and life! It is pretty sad that I probably won't be seeing any new videos from you here. You are one of my favorite creators in KZbin; I've not yet found anyone who made these types of videos the way you do - such a great combination of topic, silent storytelling/narration, shot composition, and choice of music. My favorites are probably your old videos showing your daily lives, and seeing how you turn something usually so mundane into something so beautiful, at least to me, is something wonderful. The old channel name of Sorekara Melancholy is truly a fitting name for those, I think. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating these little masterpieces in this corner of KZbin. In the end life goes on, and as you found your own way, I can only hope that we could meet again in some type or form in the future. Much love and appreciation for all that you do, and I wish you all the best!

Ryu, As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with Japan. What started as a young American boy who simply loved the idea of ninjas has grown into a young adult with an immense appreciation for the beauty of Japan, of it's people's culture, of the art and architecture, and of it's history. Over many years, I have consumed countless media that is either Japanese in origin or depicting it. I found your channel when looking for something authentic, and I'm glad I came across one of your videos. You have a mastery of cinematography that seems to draw out the beauty in front of your camera, and I always enjoy your witty comments and jokes in the subtitles. I have now watched all of your videos several times, and I adore them all very much. In truth, it's a bit saddening to hear that this may be your last video, though I am happy for you! I just hope you know that there are people who greatly appreciate you and your videos. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into the beauty of Japan, one masterpiece at a time. Best of wishes to you and your wife, and the future ahead of you both! A fan, Brennen.

Very interesting video. I love how it combines your signature tranquil and contemplative style with a historical topic. Japanese Christians of that period really went through a lot of persecusion for their beliefs, a subject I was first introduced to through Martin Scorsese's film Silence. On another note, many congratulations for getting married! I wish you a happy family life. Not gonna lie, I will severely miss your videos - they are always an inspiration for me and a true comfort. But I'm grateful to have stumbled upon your channel Ryo back when it had a different name altogether. Who knows, maybe one day while I'm sitting in front of my computer thinking about the global economy I'll notice a new Sorekara upload on my KZbin homepage. ;)

Thank you for this, Ryo, and congratulations on your marriage! I know a local priest here in California who is Japanese and is a very traditional Catholic (which is extremely rare in the world, I think!). I don't think this will be your last video. I think in a few years, after your child is born, you'll become one of those baby bloggers. I eagerly await the day.

congratulations on getting married and i hope for the best in the future for you and your wife i have loved every video you have made. the quality is super good and the calm tone have always made you stand out to me. i relay liked the video were you explored tokyo by tram and gave some info on places that i now would like to visit, i like the video because it is some thing that i would like to do my self one day, just jump on different trains and see were the stops take me the video about the photos were interesting and it was cool to see the difference so many years have made from the same streets. the video about Tohoku is also a nice video about the disaster that took place there and it is one of the best videos about the disaster that i have seen. this is just 3 of my favorite videos and they are all videos that i love. it will be interesting to see if you post another video in the future if so i'm going to watch it.

Yes I was with my parents and siblings when I heard an alert sound from everyone's cell phones and then felt a big quake. We were quite surprised, but the epicenter was far from where I live, so I was not harmed. Thanks for worrying about me and Japan.
